Some hunters were fond of this improvement as was PO Ackley. It delivers
200 FPS velocity increase in the 200 gr Hawk and other bullet loadings. It does require handloading-of course.

I have two of my 71s in this caliber, and it has downed an Alaskan bull moose with one shot. It is basically a 35 Whelen Model 71
when so chambered. Mine came this way-the disadvantage is the value of
a current Model 71 Winchester-or same altered.

This caliber is for elk-bear-moose. It will handle anything on this continent. Not needed for deer. In the 1970s I killed a CO. elk with a .405 original 1895 W-this rifle caliber rates about even with the .405.
But I was using 270 gr Hawk bullets-that is probably why. We have really good bullets now -if you do your homework.
