I am thinking of buying a 1873 Uberti or other brand of 1873 Winchester Replica. Case hardened reciever. Will the Replica rifles handle hot 45 L.C. loads ? I can'f find a 44 Magnum Rifle at this time. Thanks Norm

The 1873 action was not a strong one when it was designed, but it did fine for the black powder pistol cartridges available at that time.

Wait and find a more modern design if you want .44 magnum ballistics from a lever gun. Even with the modern steels used for today's replicas, the '73 is comparatively weak in its lockup.

John Browning later designed beefier actions for more powerful cartridges, but the '73 is limited.

See John Taffin's book Action Shooting Cowboy Style, p.255, "The 1866 and 1873 are smooth, but they are not strong. Do Not, Repeat, DO NOT use anything other than standard loads in the 1860, the 1866 , or even in the 1873 Winchester replicas." His emphasis.

Norm, if you open the action of your '73 you'll be able to see why people call the action "weak". Basically, all that's holding the bolt against the cartridge in the chamber is a two-part toggle held in place by your hand's pressure on the lever and a pin in the middle of the toggle. It's NOT designed for heavy loads.

BP loads and smokeless loads that don't make more than 15,000 to 18,000 CUP pressure are fine in the 1873 action. More than that and you want to move to a stronger action like the 1892 or Marlin action.

It might, but I wouldn't. It may handle a few, but hot loads will soon mess it up. With a real hot a load, it could mess you up.

Agree with other comments on the toggle action not being the way to go with hot loads. Find you a '92 clone or a Marlin. Save the '73 for cowboy action shooting.
