What is a fair price to pay for a new Rossi I can't find a decent used one.. Thks

What model are you looking for? Might make a difference.

For the 24" octagon barreled version like I got, I'm guessing about $450, give or take. The more basic carbines, probably less.

Depending on your goals and standards, the Rossis can benefit greatly by some tweaking. I did extensive work on mine, using Steve Gunn's kit and DVD, and fire lapping the bore. It's one of my favorite shooters.

If you're happy if it goes "bang" reliably, and kills stuff at normal lever rifle distances, you might not want to bother with the tweaks. The typical issues you encounter with a lever action, especially in pistol calibers, pertain to feeding and ejection, but they are fixable.

The last time I looked on GB they had them as low as $409 before shipping and transfer fee. I would say $450 otd is a fair price.

Curious- Will they cycle a .38 special or do you guys load the 357 mags down as needed?

38 works fine, unless you try full wadcutters!

As a gunsmith explained to me, and it makes sense, a pistol caliber lever action is a lot like a semiauto pistol in terms of feeding. Angles, bullet shape, crimping, etc., can be critical.

In handloading for my Rossi .38/.357 I found that to be the case, and also the ejector and its spring. Also, with the smith's blessing, when I had it completely apart for tuning I put a slight bevel on the bottom edge of the chamber. I had measured the case head thickness and found it to be about .10", plenty of metal. All of this helped feeding and ejection, but it is still fussy.

I don't claim to be any kind of expert, nor do I fully understand all the mechanics and dynamics involved. Each individual rfile seems to be somewhat unique.

This week, the Rossi lever in 44 mag is $499 at Big5 sporting goods. The sale ends Saturday.

I bought a .357 Rossi this past winter{475.00 for a blued trapper}. Mine has fed everything you can stick in it {.38's and .357's} flawlessly right out of the box.

Saved $500 bucks today, they were out of stock AND the sale was over! close one, though.

Saw one yesterday in good shape in a gun shop - $495.00. Seemed like a ridiculous price.

I've been looking and trying to buy a Rossi 92 357 stainless for over a year. No one seems to have them. I stumbled across Robertson's Trading Post online over the weekend and secured one for $519. High price? Yes, but now I have one...got tired of trying to find one at any price! I guess when I average it against the Rossi 92 stainless 45 I bought a couple years ago used for $325, the prices average out to $420 each!

Sadly ... W--Mart. They usually run around 450.00, blued. Seems like they are usually in .44, but a good manager will order a .357 for you. I'd rather pay the extra from an individual, but if low price is the factor, I doubt you'll find lower.

I don't think 519.00 was bad. The number crunchers will disagree. But you have to wonder when a guy passes up on something to save $20 or even a $120... and waits a year or two or indefinitely for the sake of money ... would the enjoyment have been worth it? I guess it depends on which brings you more pleasure - the money - or the item.

I don't recall anyone ever passing up an opportunity to shoot one of my rifles because I paid to much for it.

If I was looking for a Rossi 92, I'd call Steve Young. He's THE '92 smith and offers '92's already slicked up. Some of those guns are pretty rough out of the box and Steve knows how to make them sing.

If you're into cowboy action shooting, there are better choices. If you're looking for a strong, rugged hunting rifle, the '92 is hard to beat. They can be COAL sensitive, so the ammo can make a difference. Fast shooting like in CAS, they tend to stove pipe unless they've been timed and slicked up by an expert. There're not the easiest guns to work on.

Looked at them at Big5 last night and wasn't impressed with it. I'm sticking with my USA Winchester and pre-Rem Marlin.

What didn't you like..?

I have an R92 in 357. It was actually the first gun I ever deer hunted with. Pretty good shooter.

If you have a pre-rem marlin, you don't need one of these.

but for those of us who don't it looks like a good deal.

I paid $454 for my stainless one about 3 weeks ago from Grabagun.com. Blued is $421 & stainless is $519 now but they out of stock on both. Great prices there and only $6 to ship to your FFL.

I got the itch for a 20" 357 last spring. Looked high & low and had my FFL try to order one. I 'settled' for a 16" carbine and in retrospect. am very glad I did. Mine did not like 38's it took several tear-downs to get it right with 357's... but then end result is so good I don't care.

I have a 20" 357. Since this thread is a few years old, prices have gonenup a little on any levergun in 357. Mine was slicked up by me using stevesgunz dvd and feels like a well used, 100 yr old rifle.

Gonna refinish the stocks soon. It's a good shooter and handles 38 or 357 equally well.

Basic 16" or 20" ? 357's are hardest I think to find

The case hardened/oct barrels are also hard to find...

I've had several...have one left in 45 Colt CH/oct 20"

I'd buy a 'JM' Marlin first....Rossi C/S sucks bad......

Just picked up a stainless carbine for 503 from Buds

With all the comments about these rifles being so rough of manufacture, I am pleased with the overall fit and finish.

Smooth operation of lever and no problems with feeding my handgun loads.

I believe they have made improvements to their CS.

I sold a 1894 CP (factory ported 16" 357) to buy my 2 Rossis. Sold a presafety 1894C (18" 357) to buy the CP cause i had wanted it so long. Major let down.
