I picked up a 9422M last year at a gun show. It's an obvious safe queen in beautiful condition. It has the serial number F37370. I called Winchester and talked to the historian about the rifle. They were kind of surprised - I was told that the first year serial numbers started in the 60xxx range, maybe it was 64xxx(I can't remember exactly) and that my rifle must have predated the first year but that's all they could tell me. It's not stamped XTR and it has some pretty nice wood, with a gloss finish and no checkering. It's probably a 95% rifle. Although I don't shoot it very much, it's a great rifle to shoot - very accurate and slicker action than my Marlin 1894m 22mag.

I wondered if anybody had any information or explanation about this low ser# rifle.

I've got a couple at home, guess I can take a peek at my serial numbers to give you some sort of reference.

Go over to rimfirecentral, go to the Winchester forum, and browse through the sticky on 94/22 dates of manufacture. Looks like a 1972.

I'm done buying rimfire rifles for a while UNLESS I run into a nice Winchester 9422. I could be persuaded to get an old Marlin 39A if I found one at a reasonable price. But I really want a Winchester to play with.

I've been waiting for years to find one "reasonable", too - but I never even found ANY, locally, where I could buy it w/o paying extra for shipping + two transfer fees.

Heck - one of my local FFL's charges 10% of the bill of sale as his transfer-in fee.
I guess he figures he wants a commission from a customer, regardless of where they get the gun.

But, I finally bought one this weekend - at a gun show.

And NO - it wasn't "reasonable", but (at last) I have what I wanted, sometime before I'm too old to enjoy it.

I bought my 9422M new in 1992 and it is a joy to shoot! I'm sure you will enjoy yours as well.

I passed up a NIB 9422M last month at a gun show the guy wanted $750 and would not budge off the price. I wanted it to go with my Marlin 1894M, but I guess I will look for a Marlin 57M as there were plenty (60,xxx IIRC) of those made over the 10 years or so they were in production.

Yep,
I've got one! 24" barrel with pistol grip. Only mine dosen't have the curved butt plate. Put a Williams guide peep on it, with a fiber optic front sight. Great shooting 22. Am thinking mine was one of the last off the production line, as it has a mag tube for a 22 magnum, and is a 22 LR. Assembled from parts?

IIRC, the Classic was only made for two years. I had two, a LR and a Mag.

Both had the issue 22" barrels, high-polish blue, uncheckered PG stock, 3/4 magazine and blued/polished curved buttplates.

From what I have seen in recent years, if you can find a M9422 for under $500, go for it! They are getting pricey. Lou

I found a 9422, S/N F44XXX (1972 I believe) in somewhat sad shape for $250. It had a few major rust spots on it, pretty plain wood. I took it home, smoothed the rust spots and reblued with cold blue, mounted a Williams FP rear sight to the tip-off mount grooves and took it to the range. It was too cold and windy to do more than function check it and get a preliminary zero, but it worked fine. I still prefer my Marlin 39A and 39M, but I will be keeping this one, too.
