LOL, it was a hell of a kill, not hunting, more like grocery shopping with a rifle, but this time, it was Sharps Rifles.
My bull gave a clear shot in the herd at about 161 yards, me never having had the pleasure of shooting/seeing buffalo up close caused me to hit the brisket on the first shot, bullet went through the brisket and broke the bulls left front leg on exit.
I didn't know about the 5/6 inches of hair hanging down from the buffalo's chest, got that figured out quick and center punched the heart on the next shot, the bull bellowed and spun out to just under 200 yards, the 3rd shot was dead center through both shoulders, got the front of the lungs on that shot too, he was done and down at that point.
My little 45-70 done a hell of a job, I got exactly what I've been loading and testing for, a 530 gr paper patched bullet at 1230 fps that shoots very accurate and punches a straight wound channel and is not deflected, three shots and three pass throughs, I can't ask for more from a Sharps rifle, all shooting was done prone and off my elbows, in all the excitement I forgot to grab my sticks.
This was my first buffalo, but definitely NOT my last.
Thanks for all the help, tips, and info over the years Men, I really appreciate it.
