Anyone here got some 100,000+ mi. Tacoma's still kickin' strong?
Posted By: Bulletbutt Re: Tacoma 100,000+mileage? - 08/07/12
I've got 138,000 on my '07. It's a 4cyl 4X4 w/5sp stick. I've replaced one front wheel bearing and a airbag thingie that they just let me know I will be getting reimbursed for the cost.

I changed the plugs like it says to do, and while I was at it,the serpentine belt, and the battery, too. Battery and belt were fine, but I thought, what the heck...

It's really been the best rig I've had.

I've had a Toyota truck (pre-Tacoma when they only made one small size), Tacoma, T100 and a Tundra. They all went WELL over 100k. The first truck went close to 400K, the others were around 200K before I sold them. They were still going strong too.

Had over 100,000 on my 99 Tacoma when I sold it to my BIL. Had to replace the contacts in the starter in 13 years of ownership....other than that was just routine maintenance. Well over 100,000 is the norm for these vehicles.

My brother has a 2003 with 220,000 miles .its his work truck and it gets the crap abused out of it ..tows contruction trailers that weigh more then the truck specs allow. Tuneups , oil changes , one wheel bearing and a fuel injector in all that time. He retired it a few months back and just uses it as a daily driver now. His Wifes Taco is a 92 model with 250,000 and it is a daily driver as well. He has owned at least 1/2 dozen 4cyl trucks and 250k would be the least amount of mileage on anyone of them before he sold them. He had employees driving them and he lives in what I would call extreme conditions every day.

yeah i think he likes them

I have 2005 4x4 that had its 210,000 mile service a couple or three months ago. Aside from normal maintenance, the only thing I have had to do was replace the middle U-joint in the rear drive shaft at 150,0000 miles--wasn't broken but was getting loose. I regularly pull a double axle flatbed trailer with my Ranger on board, and have hauled heavier loads than that a time or two. Been a really good truck so far...

I've got a 98 4Runner, which is basically the same except for 4 doors, a hatch, and coil springs in the back. I'm nearing 190k and things are going well. What's amazing is how many examples of that bodystyle 4Runner I see on the road every day, especially when you consider that they quit making it 10 years ago. The Tacoma got a new model about 9 years ago and there are a ton of the older ones still on the road today.

What kind of mileage do you guys get with your 4x4 Tacoma's? 4cyl or 6cyl?

I have a 2009 double cab 6cyl auto 4x4 TRD ..I get 21 mpg on the highway...high teens around town. Only upgrades on it are Michelin LTX ms/2 tires and synthetic oil

Mine was a 99 extended cab, 4wd, 5 speed, 2.7 liter running 31x10.50x15's and I got 17-18 in town and 21-24 on the highway. To get the best mileage I had to keep it under 60.
Posted By: himmelrr Re: Tacoma 100,000+mileage? - 08/08/12
My 4cyl "truck" would get 28 on the highway. The 4cyl Tacoma about 24 in the highway. Both had stock tires and I usually ran 70-75. My V6 T100 was 21.

Mine is an extended cab with the 4.0 liter V-6 and 6-speed manual. I average 20-22 mpg on the highway. Burning through full tanks of gas on the interstate at 75 mph (and up) knocks it down into the 19-20 mpg range. It doesn't spend enough time "in town" to get a decent estimate.

Ditto, except mine is a 08 4x2. 85K on it and no issues just regular maintenance.
Posted By: Bulletbutt Re: Tacoma 100,000+mileage? - 08/09/12
My '07 4cyl gave me 25mpg on the hwy when i first got it. I even argued a little with Brad on here about him saying he only got 20 with his, but now mine is down to 21 mixed hiway and city, and last winter I got 20 a couple of times. blush

I usually drive pretty fast and I also have a canopy and a winch on it, so there's a little extra weight. I'm running stock size/rating TOYO A/Ts for tires.
Posted By: VernAK Re: Tacoma 100,000+mileage? - 08/09/12
My T100 had 250K on it when I sold to neighbor.....neighbor added 100K and still driving....one U joint and a set of brakes and ball joints.....I'm 108 miles to first traffic light so brakes last a long time.

My 05 Taco had 150 K when I totaled on a bull moose.....

I've never worn one out.

Here's our 96 Tacoma. Dad bought another Tacoma this year and kicked this one to me. It's a 3.4 V6 Auto 4x4 that hasn't required anything but normal maintenance. I get 20mpg on the hwy.

07 Double cab 4X4 V6, bought new on Aug. 27 2007. 108,000 miles. So far I've replaced front brakes, plugs, and tires X2. Other than oil and filter that is it.

Most of my driving is a mix of city and rural highways and I get around 18mpg. On a road trip I get between 20-21 mpg

My kid has a 2006 with a v6 6 speed..he is getting pretty darn good gas mileage even though he has a heavier foot then I do mad

Ours is a 2000 extended cab 4x4, with 4-cylinder and manual transmission. Bought it used in 2003 at 44,000 miles and it now has 153,000. Nothing done to it except regular maintenance since we've had it, and it averages around 24 on the highway when running 65-70.

Before that had a full-time 4WD Corolla wagon that had 184,000 on it when traded in on the Tacoma. Basically the same sort of maintenance with it, and it was still getting the same 32-33 mpg on the highway it got right after we bought it new in 1989. Might be still running it if we hadn't decided we needed more room for bird dogs and dead big game.

310,000 on my '87 $200 wonder. Ran it as a DD until a few months back. My wife actually drove it home. The '96 F150 that hit her had to be taken away on a rollback.

I have a 2002 extended cab 4x4 with 4 cyl/manual tranny. Bought it two years ago with 83K and change on the odometer. Now has 111K. Run synthetic oil, change every 5K miles, routine maintenance, etc. Runs like it's brand new and gets around 25mph on the highway at 70mph. Love that truck.

510,000....original motor... overhauled for getting a little tired at 430K..
I had a Tacoma (95 I think) and a pre-Tacoma that I ran hard for 150k or so each. Lots of offroad, lots of pulling stuff too heavy for a small truck and loading them up with more than I should have. The only problems I remember were putting a couple of starters on each and a harmonic balancer that went bad on the Tacoma.

I have a 2003 Tacoma, 2wd, 4 cyl, 5 speed. I have 195,000+ as it sits in the drive. I've replaced the battery once and its on its forth set of tires. Nothing but normal wear and tear and its still going strong.

Yept...got a '98 with 196K on it...bought it with 113K on it

in '06.....3.4 V6 & purrs like a kitten...recently had the timing

belt & water pump changed so have no plans on getting rid of it

anytime soon....I use Mobile One 5w30 syn oil and it is

changed every 10K miles...adding maybe 1/2 qt between changes...

21-22 mpg is the average...also have an '05 pushing 90K miles

Dependable trucks

My '09 Tacoma 4cyl. 5 spd. manual Xtra cab 4x4 just turned 92,000. today. No issues at all. Just routine maintenance & TLC. Got it at the end of August in '08. Front brake pads are getting close to replacement time but not down that far yet. Back in '08 they bought my '97 Tacoma 4 cyl. 4x4 with 192 thousand miles from me for 11400 bucks so they could crush it. Some of the 1995-2000 trucks had a frame rust problem above the rear axle. My '97 qualified for the buy-back even though it had 192k in the rust belt where there's a lot of snow and road salt. Even with 192k on the odometer (bought it new so I know it's true) it still had the original starter, water pump, alternator, wheel bearings and lots more. IIRC the biggest repair that thing ever had was replacing the mass air flow sensor around 160k and the catalytic converter at about 165-170k.
Posted By: Dutch Re: Tacoma 100,000+mileage? - 09/04/12
My son tested the airbag by running into a guardrail on my '97 Taco last year -- 330,000 miles, and never added oil between oil changes. Normal wear and tear, two new cat converters.
Posted By: 22250rem Re: Tacoma 100,000+mileage? - 09/05/12
If it wasn't for the frame rust issues on the '95-2000's, I might still be driving my '97 Tacoma. Mine never used any oil between changes either. I was really shocked that they offered me so much for a truck almost 12 yrs. old with 192K on it. It wasn't a trade-in deal but an outright purchase. I cashed the check and could have used the $$ on any other make of truck but they also gave me a certificate good for $2500. off my dealers best deal on a new Tacoma. How many companies other than Toyota stand behind their trucks like that? I was gonna get another Tacoma anyway cause I loved my '97 a lot. Especially in a foot or so of blowing, drifting snow when the plows haven't been through yet. You don't see hardly any Tacomas that old around here anymore cause most of them had the frame rust and Toyota was paying so much to get 'em off the road that guys like me were saying; "they made me an offer I couldn't refuse".

I put my 88 4Runner in the shop last week. Serviced the automatic trans, repacked the hubs, front disc brake job, new idler arm and pittman arm, wheel alignment. New rotor/cap/plugs/wires, and fixed two nagging little electrical switch problems. I put on a set of Goodyear Wrangler 235/75/R15 tires, and new shocks.
Good for another 300K now. laugh
I get 19 mpg around town, 25 on the highway at 65 mph.

My first Toyota was a pre Tacoma 1989 reg cab 4x4 5spd 4 cyl
I bought it spank new and drove it harder than any 4x4 I had ever
had it had 5 miles on it when I bought it.YEARS later it had 262,000 miles when I sold it. It still ran great no issues at all.I also had the old body style 4 cyl 4runner no problems ether.
Now I have a 2002 Tacoma reg cab 4x4 4cyl Auto
It ain`t going no where.

Local lot has a 2012 Tacoma Double cab with the auto tranny and V6. Playing with the idea of trading the '01 Silverado that now has 162k miles. So it sounds like you guys with the V6 motors are getting around 20-21 mpg on the highway? I have a 50 mile round trip commute each day. The Silverado gets about 16-17, so 20+ would be a improvement. The Tacoma has 26k miles, so I should be able to put a few on without too much trouble!?!
This is my 7th one of the fleet. They are all service/courier trucks. Everyone I have had 2.7L/3.4L 1st. Gen. has had over 275K and still running strong. All 7 of my trucks have been converted over to a full offroad OME 3" crawler suspension package, SS Magnaflow Exhaust, NWOF Header, Hi-Flo Cat., Centerforce Clutch, Brembo ceramic brakes and crossdrilled rotors, K&N Filter, and this 98 Tacoma 2.7L is wearing a brand new set of 11' FJ Wheels and Tires. I'm originally a Chevy convert 20 years ago. I won't even look at Domestics anymore. These Toyota's are great!!!!! This 98 4x4 has never been in the garage for anything.. I did all the work.. Absolutely a great performer. I was thinking about buying a new one but decided to stick with my 1st gen's. I didn't want to deal with all the BS, especially with those TPMS sensors and umptein o2 Sensors everywhere on the new ones.

I was told last Friday at a Les Schwab tire store that starting next year, government regulations won't allow them to install wheels without TPMSensors on your vehicle if that vehicle originally came with sensors...two sets of wheels means two sets of sensors. The good news is sensors have come down in price and are lasting a couple years longer than predicted.
Next year I'm thinking of down sizing from a Tundra back to a Tacoma. Thinking about an pre runner, extended cab, 4cylinder, auto,2wd. Might go with a 5sp. stick. How does the performance of the 2.7 compare with the older 4 cylinders? The only experience I've had with them is my old 96 Tacoma which was a dog performance wise. It did get great gas mileage, and was reliable.

The only thing that was replaced in over 100K miles was the starter, other than parts from normal wear and tear.

Those sensors are a pain in the butt.
I've got a 1999 model tacoma. It is an extended cab 4x4 with 4cyl and 5 spd. I think the mileage is 111,800 or so.

Mrs. Tide just traded her Caddy for a 4 door 2010 model, so I may be selling mine.

Before my '99 model, I drove a 1994 model. It were a dandy.

Wanna drive that out to Montana? You have a potential buyer here lol
Sitting at the local water hole a Ford guy was telling everyone how great his NEW F150 was, he just wasn't happy with the service department fixing his heater control and valve tap. I told him if he bought a Toyota he wouldnt have to be in the service department. He got pizzed, Tacoma A/T ext cab 4 banger, put front brakes on it at 133K, no other repairs, traded it at 177K, got half what I paid for it on new one.
I just bought a 2.7L 4-banger of the 2012 variety. I'll have to get back to you guys on this thread in another 98,800 miles....
I bought a 2012 Access Cab at the end of August and I'm taking it in for it's 5k checkup next week.
It's a V6 TRD and I'm getting around 21/17 for mileage.
Not a whole lot better than the mileage I got with the '06 GMC 5.3 I traded in for it, but I'm getting to know this truck and so far, I like it a lot.

They take the place of the valvestems in your wheels. They have a frequency they transmit to a receiver in your vehicle and when a tire's pressure drops 5#, they illuminate a light on your dash. They allow you to stop before your tire goes completely flat and comes apart...in theory.

Someone may correct me on the 5# part, but that's the gist of it.

I'm not sure if the 5#'s is exactly correct but seems close. Changing tire sizes, rims, sometimes even changing to a different tire on the same rim will jack with the sensors. They're not that hard to reset, but most people just ignore them...

David
I can't stand that yellow light being on so I have a set of sensors in each of two sets of wheels---winter and summer tires.

Two weeks ago I had the studs put on again and the guys at the tire store here couldn't reset them to the second set of sensors. A fellow in another store said you have to stick a bent paper clip into the data port and short out two pins, thereby erasing the computer's memory of the other set of sensors.

At least now we Toyota owners don't have to go to a Toyota dealer to have them reset each time. That could get expensive. When that was the case, I just put black tape over the yellow light and ignored it.
158,000 miles on an '07 FJ Cruiser 4x4. No problems worth noting.
be quiet or the dodge owners might here ya - you are going to give them an inferiority complex

The fellow was confusing resetting the yaw sensor with resetting the TPMS. Shorting out the pins can be used to reset the yaw sensor for the vehicle stability control if the tire shop you use doesn't have the latest type of alignment machine that will reset it through the computer.

Resetting the TPMS is actually pretty darn easy:

Mine is a 1996 4x4 extended cab 2.7L 5speed, 271,000 miles on it. I have changed the oil some, new starter, brakes, plugs and air filter.

Mine has a bad spot at the vey end of the frame about 4" long I need replaced.

I am looking for a newer one to replaced my 1997 Dodge 1500 4x4.
Oh yeah, to answer the OP...

2007 Tacoma DCSB V6 Sport 4x4, 146,000 miles, my son's truck now. Replaced the battery, right front wheel bearing, both tail lights - that's it. Truck is well used, not abused, fluids changed with the good stuff on schedule. Not burning a drop of oil, feels like its just now broke in.

I tried to reset it several times---going by the book--and it never "took". The tire shop that couldn't reset it said something like it would record the frequencies of the four sensors and the spare, but it wouldn't "write it". That's all I know, and they reset TPMSs all the time, so I don't know what gave on mine.
They also go bad in about 8 years, and need to be replaced. At $200/each, I decided to live with the warning light...
I am sure I will stick with my 2002 Tacoma 4X4 reg.cab 2.7 4cyl
as long as I can!!!!
These new ones have too much electronic crap for this OLD MAN!

Think of it this way. 10 years ago people said the 2002's had too much electronic crap as well. grin

All joking aside though, I do agree. I'm very happy with my 2011 Tundra but I'm concerned about the electronics, especially as the vehicle ages.

The tire store here says the cost of the sensors have come down alot in the last couple years. Mine, he said, are now around $65 each.

A couple years ago when my sensors were $125 each at the dealer, I bought a set of four off eBay for around $100.

had my winter tires/wheels put on my 2007, and they said they couldnt do it w/out the sensors. Ive been running my winter wheels with no sensors for five years. So I had them put them in, $30 each installed, $120 total.
Just turned 101k on my 2007. My heater fan clicks on low speed (need to take it apart and make sure its balanced), and my temp sensor/ compass stopped working at 40k. I think I can fix that with a solder gun. No other issues.

I'd buy one again.
Got a '96 ext. cab 2.7 auto. 4 x 4. 110,000 K. Replaced the starter and rear springs. Just put new tires and a battery in. Ready for another 110,000 K. I've had some great offers from strangers to buy it , but I'm keeping this one. Damn good truck! The air conditioner still works after 16 years!

We sold our 94 tacoma, 4 cyl with 275,000 on it and it is still going strong for the college kid thatbought it.We bought a used 2004 with 2400 miles on it, v-6 andit now has about 80k on it. No maintenance on either except brakes tires plugs and oil.

I attribute the longevity to the fact that I change oil and filter every 3000 miles, not like guys running synthetci and running 10K or guys running regualr oil and changing at 5-6K.

We got 24 mpg +or- with the 94 and usually get 22 or so with the 2004.

We have a 2005 4WD that we bought new. It now has 220,000+ miles on the odometer. We change the oil and filters every 5,000 miles using "regular" Shell Rotella 5W-30 as Toyota recommends. We have averaged right around 2,500 miles per month since we bought it, so the oil gets changed about every other month, on the average. Still getting the same mileage as it did when it was new.

We haven't babied it at all--it has seen its share of rough country and hauled some loads on a double axle flatbed trailer. Other than factory suggested maintenance and a couple of recalls (one for checking the accelerator pedal and one for replacing a faulty spiral cable in the airbag system), we did replace the middle u-joint in the rear drive shaft. It was getting loose. Because the bulk of our miles are on the highway, we haven't even had to replace the original brake pads.

I'd look elsewhere to attribute longevity. What you are experiencing is the same as those who folllow the manufacturer's recomendation and change oil and filters at longer intervals than you. What the experts say is that you are wasting oil. Lots of us have been watching and listening on this for a long time and have come to the same conclusion---oil and engines are better than when 3,000 mile changes were the norm.

Kid wrecked my '97 Tacoma when it had 330,000 miles on it, still not using oil, and used only regular oil with changes at 5,000.

Sounds to me you spent $1,200 you didn't have to......

I put 175,000 on my 2001 Doublecab. That was with the original water pump and timing belt/tensioner

I only have 39k on my new-to-me 2009 Regular cab though.

Seafire, how many engines, trannies and clutches have you gone through in that rig?
Posted By: Kimbo Re: Tacoma 100,000+mileage? - 01/12/13
Hey Fella's, just a quick update on my 98 Taco 4x4 - maroon color (pics attached in an earlier thread about 5 pages back 275K). Now roughly about 360K give or take a couple and still a full time service courier truck daily from Pa. to North Jersey (175 miles one way). The truck is absolutely great!!!! The downside is that these 2700 series motors really lack power. Of course, I'm comparing it to my past 5.7L chevys which I no longer drive. Too many problems, bad quality, and most of all not trustworthy. Anyway, on the mods. The best and most bang for my money came from the exhaust mod. I salvaged a SS Magnaflow system from a 3400 series truck, hacked about 12"s off the front end of the can to fit my reg. cab., welded the flange back on, put a thick gasket back in and it runs great!! You can feel an intant difference. Of course it is mated up to my NWOF header and high flow cat. The other great mod. comes from the brembo brakes and ceramic pads. The truck stops much quicker with a much more firm feel to it.
If you fella's have done some moderate bolt on mods, please let me know what you did to your truck and what worked the best. I'd like to try it out. thanks kimbo..

overhauled the engine at 430K...it was just getting a little tired...if I had lived somewhere flat like Fla, I wouldn't have really overhauled it..

I redid the trans at that time, just because it was apart at the time...

I had the original clutch replaced at 375K, just due to thought it was time...

when the engine was overhauled, I replaced the clutch again, once again, just because it was apart..

The transfer case was overhauled at 375K, due to developing a leak.. same with rear end developed a leak, so overhauled that at 475K....

overhauls were just pulling and replacing ALL the Gaskets.. except trans, which has a 5th gear finally going out at that period...

front brakes pad have been replaced 4 times, and the rear brakes 3 times... last time replace from calipers and the rear slave cylinders on the back brakes.....

first alternator was overhauled at 250K and then again at 500K...along with started at 500K, just because it was also getting tired..

At some point it becomes a mission to see how long it will last. At least it would for me.
Posted By: Kimbo Re: Tacoma 100,000+mileage? - 03/18/13
Just take those TPMS sensors out and stick them in a piece of 3" PVC tube, cap the ends and stick it under the seat. Keeps the on board brain happy and you'll never have to worry about them again.
They are nothing more than another "conspiracy" from the dealership. LOL!!!!

The boy just turned 100K in our 2002 Tacoma.
Posted By: willhunt4 Re: Tacoma 100,000+mileage? - 03/20/13
My brother's 2002 Tacoma had 212,000k when he decided it was time for a new one. He just bought a 2012 a few months back.

My next door neighbor has a 2005 or 2006 DC with a 4.0L with 210,000 and it runs like it did when it was new!
