How reliable are the 4.7V8s in the 2000 Tundras? I'm looking at a VERY clean 2000 4x4 with 194,000 miles on it. Just wanted to see if 300,000 miles was reasonable in this motor or if it is near the end of its good life at 200K.

I've got an '05 Sequoia 4.7 V8 with 216,000 miles on it, still going strong. I anticipate it will be my oldest son's first vehicle when he starts driving in 6 years...

I have a 141,000 on my 2002. No issues as of yet.

The 2UZ-FE (4.7 liter V8) is one of the most reliable engines ever built IMO.

Maintenance records are a plus as no engine is going to live a long life without being taken care of

I had a 01 tundra with the 4.7 and it ran fine, but was a absolutely gas hog and had no towing or pulling power for a v8! I would not recommend a 4.7 unless you don't mind feeding it's thirst for gas and don't want to tow anything!
Posted By: liliysdad Re: 4.7V8 Toyota Tundra? - 12/27/12
Mine does OK. I can get 18mpg if I pay attention, 16-17 is normal. I have towed with it some, and havent noticed anything out of the ordinary.

The Tundra got a 5 speed tranny in '05. Prior to that was a 4 speed which didn't get as good gas mileage.

Just be aware that the 4.7L toyota engine has a timing belt that needs to be replaced every 90,000 miles. Timing belts are costly and at 194,000 miles it should have had it's second one at 180,000. If it hasn't then it'd have to be done immediately and you're looking at a lot of extra $$$ just for that.

If you think that motor was a gas hog...You've never had a gas hog. laugh

Is that an interference engine where the pistons will hit the valves if the timing belt breaks?

I can't speak for the 4.7L but most Toys are "interference" motors. If in doubt, do the belt, it can be very expensive if you take a chance!

Yes, it is.

My 2000 Tundra V-8 4X4 is one of the best trucks I've owned; plenty of power, quiet, smooth, but poor fuel economy.
Posted By: LWILLIAMS Re: 4.7V8 Toyota Tundra? - 12/30/12
Very reliable trucks, but as said before the maintenance and that timing belt being changed are the biggest issues. If the belt goes so does the whole motor being zero tolerance as they are. If the records are there and the price is right there should be no problems.

I had an 01 Tundra with the 4.7L V8. That was a great truck with a very snappie engine. I got 18/19 all around mixed driving. I never complained about that kind of mileage from a truck like that..Loved that truck, and since then have owned a 2007 and now a 2010 Tundra. Love those trucks as well. Never had any problems with any of them... Very dependable and reliable. Just put gas in them, and drive them.

Regarding the 4.7L, has anybody had the valve clearance check done that's recommended at 65K (IIRC)?

Very tough. Don't be scared. It is one of those freak motors that just works. Go with it.

my 2003 has given me great service....no issues at all. I am at 160k, and just routine maintenance.

My motor has excellent power. I average 17.5mpg in mixed driving.

My brother has an 06 4X4 with that engine and 4:10 gears. It ain't bad on power and fuel economy.
Posted By: Rock Chuck Re: 4.7V8 Toyota Tundra? - 01/04/13
For a grocery hauler, the 4.7 would be fine. For a truck to haul a load, I'd highly recommend a bigger engine.

Well that truck sold and I'm now looking at 4Runners and XJ Jeep Cherokees.
I'm at over 200,000 on my '05. Still going strong.

I tow 5000 lbs with mine and it's pretty damn decent. All depends on what you're used to. Ain't no turbo diesel, but it's definitely a V8. Coming from towing 5000lbs with a 3.0l 6cyl with 200 ft lbs, 315ft lbs of the 4.7 is night and day!
