My son bought a 2014 4wd, ext cab, regular bed, 5.7? V8 Tundra last week. Wasn't his first choice but as he was turning in two one year old leased Camry's Toyota gave him the best deal money wise.

Seems like a decent truck but we're both pretty sure advertised gas mileage is optimistic. It will be his only vehicle and used to go to work and fish. He's old enough that it won't be run any harder than necessary. Anyone with experience and opinion with the Tundra on gas mileage and the truck itself?

Thanks.

I have a 2011 double cab tundra, 5.7 4x4 with 4.3 rear end, TRD version. I don't drive it like I stole it (most of the time) and for the past 12 months I've averaged 16.6 mpg a mix of highway and very rural town driving.

If he is looking to go off road with it, make sure he reads up on how to disengage the traction control and rear airbag curtains. The first time he's off road and forgot he'll realize why you need to do it before you're already in trouble...

For what I use it for now, some smaller towing, lot of cargo/wood hauling, etc. and some off road driving it's the best truck I've ever owned due to comfort, fuel economy, handling and off road ability as a overall package.

My wife has that 5.7 in her SUV and the gas mileage is atrocious but it is a great engine with a lot of "get up and go"

Love those tundra crew cabs but dont think you buy them for the mileage

considering I was averaging 12 with my 2500hd w/6.0 I'm very happy with the 5.7 and over 16mpg.

I'm pretty sure they have 4.10 differential gears without the tow package and 4.30 with it. They're not going to do real well. However, getting 16.5 or so with 4.30's and 381hp is pretty good. I'm thinking it's going to be my next one...

Yes, I have the tow package. Not sure of the rear end ratio without.

I love mine, 2010 double cab 5.7. Pulling a pop up camper early in the summer I got between 12-13. 9-11 mpg pulling a 20ft camper. I average 15 or so normally. Great truck!

15-16 avg city/hwy mix in my 2012 5.7

With my 2010 crew max(5.7L V8) I'm running between 14.5 to 15.5 in city. I tend to run between 19 and 20 on hwy with cruse control.
I have to watch where I buy gas since sam's club and Valero gas
do not do as well as others.

2008 Crew Max 5.7 4x4 - 14mpg around town, 19mpg hwy at 60-65mph, 17mpg at 70-75mph.

Keep your foot out of it and you'll do ok.

Well said. Me too.

Consumer Reports April 2014 edition says it's the only full size truck with above average reliability. None of the other 1/2 tons from Ford, Ram, or Nisson are so rated.
Overall fuel mileage was reported at 15 mpg. Only the latest versions of the Chevy/GMC's were better at 16 mpg. overall. E

I have a 2007 Tundra ext. cab w/ 5.7 we use it to pull a 28ft. Travel trailer (7500-8000lbs) I get about 10.5 towing and about the same as sigguy's report otherwise. We drove it from VA to CO a couple years ago and with the bed and back seat loaded with gear I got 18.5. I have an undercover bed cover on it that probably helps a little with fuel mileage. Mine had a glitch in one of the computer units last year but Toyota replaced it under warranty. Also had to replace the water pump other than that it's done well, I'm happy with it. The 5.7 w/ the 6 speed transmission has lots of get up and go, and it handles the trailer well. I don't mind sacrificing a little fuel economy to be able to mash the gas and feel like a man when it puts you back in the seat!
