Nice Tahoe.

I have a 98 chevy ext cab and I can understand wanting taller tires and I've debated it but I've stuck with 245s. I can't see a huge benefit in going to 265s and it would throw the speedo off. It can be electronically re-calibrated but if you don't have the sophisticated tech tool you've got to pay somebody to do it. That's my two cents on tire size and to each his own.

If you're looking for a extremely good value tire check out Firestone Destination LEs . I have a set of LEs on my truck and I'm completely satisfied with them. They're the best of the four sets of tires (BFG, Goodyear, Firestone) that I've had on my truck. When these tires wears out I'm buying a new set of LEs. I like them that much.

Try theses guys. I know nothing about them so TIFWIW.

$442.80 for a set of four 245s and free delivery.

Here's how they look on my truck. smile

From recommendations on the forums I bought Cooper Discovery AT3's for my 2008 Tahoe. I am happy with them at this point.
Posted By: Bull_Elk Re: Need tires............ - 07/19/14
I put cooper AT3's on my 2500HD quad cab last year and have no complaints so far.

Found a pretty good deal on some firestone destination A/T. Anyone running these?
Posted By: TERRY8mm Re: Need tires............ - 07/19/14
I'm partial to Michelins myself. That aside, I put the mentioned Coopers on Wifey's 4 Runner last month. We're liking them, so far.

$179.00 each OTD.

Had some FS destinations on my Silverado. They wore very well and were great in the snow for not being snow tires. The 265's look better but I went back to 245's because they work better. Better steering, gas mileage, ride and traction in the yuk. JMO

I considered ATs but after seeing the LEs and ATs in person I decided to go with LEs. The ATs have a more aggressive tread pattern and I didn't want a tire that has road noise. The reviewers say they're a quiet tire but I didn't want to take a chance.

I'd much rather have a quiet tire over something with better traction. When it snows I stick it in 4WD and I've never had problem getting around.

FWIW, this past fall I went to Wyoming and it snowed and the dirt roads were wet, muddy, slippery goo. I was very impressed with how well the LEs did in those conditions and especially considering that they're not an mud tire.

I can't say that LEs are exceptionally good in snow though. They're basically on par with all the other MS highway tires I've had. OK but not exceptional.

I've tried several, keep coming back to Cooper. The AT'3's are the best version yet. At various times they run a rebate. I paid for a set last September to get an $85 rebate before it expired. The dealer gave me the receipt and told me to come back when I needed tires. I had them put on in January a few days before Snow Jam 2014 in N. GA. I was out to midnight shuttling kids home that were stranded at school and getting medical staff to the hospitals. Never spun a tire.

For several years I worked for a Bridgestone Firestone And cooper dealer while the revo is a great tire and I have nothind bad to say a out the FSE destination series all my my vehicles wear coopers. Cooper branded tires are build by American workers in the USA. NEVER MIND THE PRICE POINT IS MUCH LOWER.
I run mischlins on most of my trucks.. Not a complaint usually get 100 k on them.
I put coopers on the suburban. Better grip I. Mud and snow but noisy
Have bfg at on my K5 best off road by far but soft rubber and don't drive as well

Have always run Michelins on our Tahoe and F150, but another Chevy followed us home. 2005, 2500HD 4X4, some trailer towing (6000K) 3-4 times a year. Other than that mostly summer/winter highway miles to our place in OR with the ATV in the back or pulling the sleds during the winter. Have been looking at Toyo traction tires due to some of the freaky weather we encounter during the winter on some of the passes, but looks like a bunch of Cooper guys here. So school me as I don't know anybody running them. Thanks gents.

Put in an order for a set of Cooper Discovery AT3's. Never had Coopers in the past but there are sure a hell of a lot of you guys that love em so let hope I do too..

When it comes to tire preference I'm reminded of a conversation I had with a rancher who's land we hunt. My hunting partner showed up at camp with 4 worn out sears may-pops on his truck and they blew. We went to town and he bought a set of new Yokohama's. We later found ourselves yacking with the rancher when I happened to look down at his truck and see it wore a set of Yoke's too so I made the comment that they must be a good tire as that's what was on the ranchers truck. And in true rancher fashion he said "When that's all the dealer sells, that's what you buy". Point well made.

I had a set of Yokohama Geolanders on my 06 Tundra and they were probably one of the best tires I ever had. Quiet, mildly aggressive, good in the mud and snow I'm willing to drive in these days.

I had BFG Mud Terrains on my F250 and liked them plenty too. I've had BFG All Terrains on everything else when I had to replace tires and I've never had a complaint about them other than the cost. smile Worth it though IMO.

Yep. I have a set of the ATs on my F150 for 65,000 or so miles, and will replace them this fall with the AT2. Probably going to do the same thing with the GF's Expedition.

I'm considering the General Grabbers. Red letter sidewall. 7 ply tread and 3 ply sidewall. A friend swears by them.

Anyone have experience with them?

After a few days and 100 miles or so of all around driving I REALLY like these Coopers. Ride great, pretty quiet, overall a really good tire.

I have the Cooper ST Maxx's on my truck. First set of Coopers for me and I love them. My wife drives a super low mile clean Yukon similar to your Tahoe, and she, on her own had a set of Toyo MT's put on it. They look awesome. mtmuley

The Toyo AT2 is a great tire. For a tough as nails, high traction tire, the Toyo M/T is very tough to beat--------or match.

How did they do in the snow and on ice? laugh laugh laugh

Just kidding. smile

I'm curious if the Coopers quiet down after say ... 300 miles or so. I noticed a difference with the last new set once they had a chance to wear in.

Just bought the Grabbers. I'm pumped for a test this weekend

Another vote for the Cooper AT3

I also have the Firestone Destination AT on my Avalanche and no complaints with them after 25k miles.
Posted By: SamOlson Re: Need tires............ - 08/08/14
Hankook, Yoko or Cooper. All good.

I have a set of Cooper ST maxx and last week had the first flat in 20 or 30k miles.

I knew the tire had a slow leak(been adding air since last winter...) but it suddenly really started losing air.

Two nails holes in the tread finally got it.

They are wearing okay, maybe make it another 10-20k miles.

My buddy who drives almost all gravel did have a set wear out under 20k. Gas engine, not even a diesel.

Warrantied and his replacement set has been better.

Got a set of duelers on an 06 tundra. They are gone at 28,000 miles. plan to take them back and see if they will work with warranty
Posted By: KDK Re: Need tires............ - 08/08/14
I'm curious what you think about them. I'm kinda half-heartedly thinking about them when I lift my CJ. I'm a little concerned about wet weather traction on road...

Can't badmouth the Hankooks that I had on my '03 2500. Went through 2 set of them @ 50k plus life expectancy. They rode well, were quiet and smooth, and did very well in Colorado and Wyoming in the snow. They were also made in Korea.

Fast forward to my new truck. It came with Firestones (Utter garbage) so I bit the bullet and got a set of Hankooks. Couldn't make them run smoothly at all. Tried indexing them and road force balancing. No good. Tire store warranteed the 2 worst ones and tried again, still felt like a paint shaker at 65. While examining the tires for run-out, I discovered "Made in China" in the sidewall. Not saying that's the reason, but it's a strange coincidence. I installed a set of Nitto A/T's and cured the problem. Very smooth now.

FWIW.....

Tire tread is a compromise.
The softer treads have a suction cup effect for better grip on ice, and snow, but wear faster.
Hard treads wear longer, but, lack some traction.
The more open tread wears faster, less rubber on the road.

^^^This^^^

I run over cactus, mesquite, and all kinds of other bad shiitt with my Michilen LTX/AT on my Ford F-250 with nary a flat one! Not as good in the mud as the BFG AT's, but they do ride better & are much quiter. Plus I can usually get at least 65K miles or more out of the Michelins.

[*]The tires are definitely heavy. About 80 pound off of the rim, so over 100 pounds on a rim I'm sure. I can see a difference in acceleration and gas mileage. This may also be due to the fact that they are brand new and probably an inch bigger in diameter taking tread wear into consideration. [*]The tread traps marble-sized rocks and won't let go. Had to pry them out with a screwdriver [*]Climbed a small, rocky hill in 2-wheel drive and spun the tires at the top. The tread had some slices and tears on one rear tire. That concerns me [*]Overall, I think these are excellent tires with excellent construction that will take more punishment than I will ever give them.

I also have no idea how to use the "list" function as you can see LOL

I am, have for a bit over a year on an F350 4x4 and love them. I've had either one ton or 3/4 ton trucks for three decades, and these are the best tires I've had yet. Ride well, good traction in wet/snow/mud, and they are tough.

A close friend works at a tire shop in the rocky cow country in southwest Idaho (Owyhee County), says these are the current top sellers. I can see why.
Posted By: SD65 Re: Need tires............ - 08/27/14

I recently purchased a set of Duratracs for my vehicle as I got a great price on them. For a cold weather AT that does well in ice/snow and behaves well on road, I'd recommend the Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx for $182 ea in your size.

Cooper currently running a $70 rebate.
