As the title says. It's a 1998 with a V6 and approximately 220,000 miles. Runs excellent and body looks to be in good shape. Is there anything I should look at specifically? They are asking around $3000. Too much?
Get underneath and look the frame over real good stem to stern. That's a fair price for that truck if the frame isn't rotted out from underneath. Rotten frames are a problem for theses trucks where they see a lot of salt...

They had a big recall on Taco a few years ago because of corroded frames. I'm not sure what years were involved. My nephew had one of them. When they lifted it on a hoist to inspect it, the frame broke by the rear axle. They gave him $2000 more than he'd paid for it 50k earlier.

I don't think it was an official recall. Toyota did buy back quite a few trucks and replace, the frames on numerous others.

I wouldn't sell my '98 Taco 6cyl ext cab for $3000 w/211K miles

Best Toyota I've ever owned........
those trucks around here go for way way too much money. insane money.
If it's clean, $3k is a good price.

I sold my 94 toy truck 8 years back with 140k, some body damage and a burned exhaust valve for $3k. Yes, I told the buyer about the valve problem. If the engine was running properly I could have easily gotten $4k for it.

Trucks values vary quite a bit. There might be $1000 or more difference between what a truck would sell for in Georgia vs Montana. The most accurate way is to ask your local bank how much they would loan on the truck. Add $500-$1000 to that and you will have a pretty good idea what it is worth in your area.
$3k is a decent price. With a Tacoma and you are looking, it won't be on the market long. I sold a 74 4 banger back in 2004 or so for $2500 and it had 275k miles on it.

People were arguing with each other wanting to buy it. I almost had bidding war, but I sold it to the first guy that came.

Same with Tacomas on lots. If you find one you like, you had best buy it that day, because it won't be there tomorrow.
Shouldn't be any rust on the frame as we are here in Montana -- unless it's from road salt. I'll have to check it out. Anything else I should look at specifically, ie, problems common for this year or anything?

Taco's always look best with mud & elk/deer blood in the bed..

4x4?

Grab it!

That truck in Arizona would easily go for close to double that I reckon if it is 4x4 and at least an extended cab...
Unless it's really trashed, it's probably already sold.
It's not sold. It's my neice's pickup. I'm going to give her a call.
Picked up the Tacoma yesterday and drove it home about 200 miles. A couple things different than I thought though. I thought it was a V6 and turns out it's a 4 banger automatic. 250,000 miles. In real good shape it seems. Seemed to drive fine. Now it's time to go through it and get it ready for hunting season. What should I have done to it to make it last and run reliably? I'm sure my neice didn't do a lot of regular maintenance. Timing belt/chain replaced? Anything you can think of that should be done that probably hasn't been? Just looking for suggestions.

From experience, keep an eye on the ball joints. They dry up and snap, the wheel falls off.. About now....

I know it can happen at -20 rolling over the 3" curb of packed snow left by the road grader.

That's what mine looked like! LOL! Except I just turned the wheel to back up....... I imagine this would not be a long term survival strategy at 80 MPH on the interstate....
The 4 is the better motor. It has a timing chain, have it checked. Check the front end, change fluids and filters.
So have them check the ball joints and the timing chain. Any other areas of concern. I think I'll run it down to the Toyota dealer in Billings and have them look it over.
