Looking for a quality 10,000 lb winch with synthetic rope. Prefer not to buy Warn cause I cant' afford 'em. Any recommendations? I'm winching a 1952 Jeep, M-38 w/ a fair bit of gear attached (gas and water cans, jacks, spare tire, tools, firearms, ammo and a rooftop tent. 10,000 lbs is prolly over-kill for this little jeep. Not sure though. Any purchase advise is appreciated. Don't think this winch is gonna get used heavily, but I'd like something reliable in case I ever need it. I am not a regular off-roader, but I'd like a quality product that gives peace of mind at the lowest reasonable price.

TIA,

Jordan
Viper winch. I don't own one but I have read good things about them and the quality of the product. They're based here in Minnesota and engineered here in Minnesota, but they do some (but not all) manufacturing in China.

Superwinch. Pretty popular here and good quality. I use one on my car hauler and one on my side by side. See a mix of Warne and Superwinch on the Jeeps around here.
Engo.

I have two - work great.

I purchased my winches here:

I have used several brands over the years. If I wanted something that I knew would work, every time, Warn would be it, hands down. If I couldnt afford a Warn, I would just go to Harbor Freight. Their winches work pretty damn well, and if not, they will take care of it. All of the Chinese winches are about the same, might as well get a cheap one.

I would still try to get a Warn. Peruse the 4x4 boards and Craigslist for a used one. New, the M8000s are pretty good winches, and arent priced terribly.
You can find the m8000 winches on amazon really reasonable with free shipping
I think 10K is way over what you need. I have a 9K Warn on my 98 Dodge( 8000 lb) and it has done everything I ever needed, including winching the truck and a 20 ft Gooseneck out of the mud.

Remember a snatch block will double your pulling power.

Personally' I'd put an 8K winch on it and spend the money that the 10K would cost and mount the winch so it would fit into a reciever hitch. Then put a reciever hitch front and back on the jeep. Wire it for front and back with plugs instead of hardwire. Use a switch inside the cab to activate a solenoid to send power to the plugs. So they would not be hot all the time.

That would give the capability of pulling foreward or backwards as backwards is needed at times.
I'm no help; I try to support local, so Warn for me.
Superwinch Really great people. I ordered an accessory when we had a famous flood a few years ago. They sent it at no charge and threw in some other helpful gear for nothing. Did I mention they are great people.

SUPERWINCH
Being good folks dont mean they make a good product. In my experience, nothing compares to Warn, both in initial quality, and after purchase support.
I have a Smittybilt 10K on the front of my Super Duty.. it is a good pulling winch.
Plus Superwinch winches have always worked great. Something I couldn't say for the underpowered POS Warn that I replaced with the Superwinch.
I recently picked up a Warn VR8000. I was only $475, but carries the Warn lifetime warranty. I also like that it has the series-wound motor like it's big brothers instead of the magnetic motor like the cheaper winches.

I just mounted mine on my '64 CJ5.
Thanks very much for the info guys. Really appreciate it.

We had warren 12000 lb on our flatbed s for use with gen poles. We used and abused them .. We probbly used them more in a week than most would use over the life of a truck... They held up pretty well..
I'm a fan of Warn myself. If you were closer I have an older 8274 that needs a little TLC I'd let you have cheap. Got it to mount on a pickup and never got around to it.
Two pages? Shees.

The top name brands (Warn, Superwinch, Mile-Marker) all build good quality units. I suspect some of the others are okay too. Buy the biggest one you can get because when you go to sell it a 12,000 or 10,000 is easier to sell than a smaller one. I have a Warn 6000# utility winch and it works fine for most jobs around my farm. It won't pull a truck and trailer out of the mud, even double lined, and if I buy another it will be a least 10K.
