I just scored a new running around/hunting buggy, a clean one owner 2002 F150 Supercrew 4x4. It is time for a set of tires. I noticed that the local Wal Marts have a sale going on the Wrangler AT/S tires in the size I need, for about 35-50 a tire less than I can get the exact same tire anywhere else.

I have never owned a set of Goodyears, let alone this model. Anyone have any experience with them? I put very few miles on my truck, averaging less than 5000 miles a year. Most of this is running around, some back and dirt roads, hunting trips, etc...some mild mud and clay will be the most rugged use this truck will see.

Tires, and tire tread are a compromise.

The most use, and desperation time.

Dry road braking rating is no small matter.

I've had them. I preferred BFG All Terrain KO2s.

I have always been a BFG AT guy, but at prices approaching twice what I can get these for, its hard to justify with the amount of driving I do.

For running gravel roads I'd put a cheap set of CO-OP tires on it before I'd spring for Goodyears. The sets of Goodyears I ran when I was living in the land of dirt roads chipped and chunked badly on gravel. The cheap tires the COOP sold did the same thing but they cost half as much.

Guess what I'm getting at is IMO at 5k a year any tire will be dry rotted before you wear them out so I see no sense in buying expensive tires for it. If I was going to spring for a nicer set of treads for it Goodyears would be about the last brand I'd buy.

I can get these for 130 a tire, mounted and balanced...have not seen a cheap tire much, if any, cheaper.

Be careful assuming the name means quality. Companies these days are happy to destroy a good name to get into the cheap segment of their business. Goodyear is putting their name on some cheap Chinese tires. Was not aware of this till I bought some for our van. frown

Yeah, I thought about that, especially with Wal Mart. That being said, the same tire with the same SKU number is available at other retailers for quite a bit more.

I have Goodyear Duratracks on my Dodge Cummins and Coopers on my wife's Tacoma. I prefer the Coopers and they a are considerably cheaper
Posted By: liliysdad Re: Tires....? - 02/21/15
Which Coopers do you have? I have been looking at the AT3. They are about 25 more a tire than the Goodyears...but have never owned a Cooper either.

We put a set of the Coops on Wifey's 4Runner. They seemed good for the 6 or 7k miles we put on before trading.

I have the Cooper Discovery M&S with Studs. I think the SST's are more expensive. It is rare that my wife drives in deep snow, but icey roads abound through all winter and the studded tires keep her safe. I have the Goodyear Duratracks that work well in deep snow and mud that I see during elk season. The Duratracks are a soft tire( naturally with snow tires) and the side walls are not as stiff.

I have two sets of wheels for each vehicle and run all terrain on both in the summer.

I was forced into running Duratracs on my work truck a few years ago and the SUCKED at pretty much anything other than posing while parked. My AO has lots of sharp basalt, granite and quartzite and probably some other types (I'm not a geologist), but long story short, I'd never buy Duratracs and actually wouldn't take for free unless I had a trade lined up in advance. Other Goodyear tires may be better, and as always YMMV.

We used some Cooper tires a few year back.

We liked them well enough, but they seemed to wear faster than some.

Softer tread is better traction, and faster wear.

Firestone Destination AT...all I'll buy for truck tires anymore, good tread life and great traction in everything I've thrown at them(I have them on my '96 F150 4x4 now)I would typically get about 2 years out of a set when I was running them on my old truck('06 F150 2wd) and I put on between 25-30,000 miles a year doing concrete construction.

I had a 2002 supercrew and I believe it came factory with the tire you're looking at. I was happy enough with them that I put a second set on the truck. I think I got about 42,000 miles out of the first set. Mostly paved road use with some off road hunting. No complaints.

Great tires....but not gonna happen. I have a hard time selling myself on spending nearly a grand on tires that are going to rot long before they wear out.

We have coopers on our of our vehicles . The car tires wear like iron and all go 50k plus. I have had three different coopers on my full size suv and only the cst tires lasted over 40k. I still buy them for the price and a great local dealer.

All I've run on my trucks for the past 30 years has been coopers. My 3/4T Sierra quad cab 4x4 is wearing a set of AT3's and I like them. The only issue, and it's not a tire issue, is that my truck is really nose heavy and without weight in the back, it doesn't take much for me to bump it into 4 wheel drive to keep the rears from spinning.

My Dodge Cummins has the same weight problem when empty. During hunting season, I'll have a stock rack on it to haul my llamas and it makes a huge difference.

I bought it used in '12 from a dealer. The dealer had put a set of Goodrich Rugged Trail A/T's on it before putting it on the lot. I have about 25k on them now and they're holding up pretty good. I should get about 50k out of them.

We're happy with the Firestone Destinations on our pickup.

You guys running the Cooper AT3's on heavy (3/4 ton) trucks. How is the road noise level?

Noticeable but not bad

Hercules tires made by Cooper are less $ and have a great warranty .

Best mud tires I have ever owned! When my current set wears out I will be buying another set.
Posted By: liliysdad Re: Tires....? - 02/24/15
I had the Firestone Mud Tires on my last patrol truck..I would have to agree, they are excellent. That being said, still more than I am wanting to spend.
Posted By: TC1 Re: Tires....? - 02/24/15
I hear ya on the cash. Those premium mud tires (goodyear, firestone etc.) ain't cheap.

I bet those Wrangler AT/S's will be just fine for what you want. A/T tires are a compromise but will probably get the job done 99% of the time and usually do better on the street.

I've owned Wrangler S's but never the AT/S's.
Posted By: tx270 Re: Tires....? - 02/24/15
I will never run anything Good Year again. I've had three (yes three sets), with multiple problems. Two sets were the AT/S you speak of. This was a few years ago but it soured me on anything Good Year from then on. YMMV.

Cooper ST Maxx are going on my truck next.
Posted By: bubbajay Re: Tires....? - 02/24/15
I will vote cooper AT3, I have one year and 35k on my set. They are rated for 55k and I have no doubt they will make that.
There is some road noise but to me they seem a bit more aggressive than your typical all terrain tire. I will buy them again.

I did a bunch of research on tires when I put some on my excursion. I settled on the pro comp xtreme at. they are deeper than just about anything aside from a swamper or bogger and very quiet. They have a 50k warranty and are not very expensive.
