I just got a new 2014 Ford F-150 Supercrew 5 1/2 foot box pickup with 3.55 axle, Ecoboost engine, 4WD and Off-Road package. Holy wah, I like this truck. I put a Lear cap on the bed. It came with some pretty aggressive all season tires.

However, the gas mileage has been quite disappointing compared to my expectations and the EPA estimates. I am only getting about 15 mpg on the highway, and that is with a very light foot on the accelerator.

I have heard that these trucks get better mileage after they have a few thousand miles on them. Just wondering what anybody else's experience is with fuel economy in a similar truck.

So far my cure for the disappointing fuel mileage is to stop calculating it and just enjoy driving the thing.
Gas has gone up .50+ in the last few weeks. Does that make you feel better? grin
I have 2 2014 F150's, both 5.0.

After the issues friends and family members have had with the Eco boost, no way was I going down that path.

Ford actually re-mapped my son-in-law's Eco to minimize the inter coolers issues. It was so lame he traded for a 150 with the 5.0.

My 150's are doing 20.5+ highway and 18+ around town.

Son-in-law said he got less mpg, towing, with the Eco.

My brother got an Eco last month and loves the mpg around town.
When the engine doesn't have much asked of it, it will do what the EPA ratings says it will do. But, if you add things like tires, axle ratios, etc. the mileage can go south easily. Towing makes for the big changes in mileage from what I've seen.
The engine has been a big disappointment. If you really need power to do work, like drive off road, or tow, I'd much rather have a diesel. E
I have a new 2014 Ecoboost 4x4 screw with 3.31 gears and 700 miles on the clock!!!!!!! I really like this Motor!!!!! pulls and performs like a Diesel . Just got back from a 300 mile road trip averaged 22 for the trip at 65 and 70 all highway.......This thing will pull Black mountain in NC without coming out of 6th gear.....No worries about the Intercooler Ford took care of the issue , it involved Trucks Built before May 2012....Ford has sold over 500.000 F150s with the Ecoboost engine by far the #1 selling engine!!!!! less than 1% had Intercooler problems.... If I decide I love it and keep it past the 60K warranty!!!! I will buy a Ford ESP extended 100K warranty for a 1000 bucks and keep on rolling!!!!! My 70 year old neighbor Has a new 2014 4x4 with the 5.0 with 8000 miles on it His lifetime average is 14 mpg....
My 2014 F-150 4x4 Platinum Crew Cab with the V-6 EcoBoost also has the 3.31 gears and gets great Fuel economy. 22 mph Hwy and 16 mpg in town.
It also has plenty of power & will pull anything I hook behind it without a problem. Last 3 pick-ups before this one were all Ford F-250 4x4 Diesels. Don't miss them at all and I've been very pleased with the EcoBoost engine.

Motor?
He's talking about the V-6 Turbo EcoBoost.
Same motor as yours?

Is the only difference then the rear ratio?
Yes sir

crazy right....

Apparently you aren't too familiar with the engine. How many have you owned?

As KMM stated, it is the number one selling engine in the F-150 and has been added to other lines as well. The 2017 Raptor and Ford GT will have the 3.5L Eco also. The Raptor with more power than the old 6.2L. Sorry sir, but if it was disappointing, it would be a thing of the past. I love my 2012.

The Ecoboost sells like Hotcakes!!!!! Dealer had about 130 new 2014 F150s on the lot when I bought about a month ago! over 100 where Ecoboost....My son Decided He wanted one last week....They had sold every Ecoboost on the lot. but still had most of the 5.0s and 3.7s left...Son bought a 5.0..... After driving my Ecoboost for 150 miles yesterday.... He is thinking about trading already. I spent about a month researching and reading about the Ecoboost before I purchased.....I did not even consider the 5.0 After reading all the problems with 5.0 engine Knocking, oblong cylinder...Figured I might as well gamble on the Ecoboost...
Currently driving a 2014 Super Cab with the EcoBoost and 3.31 rear, averaging 15.3 mpg around town and 22+ mpg on the highway....about 1 mpg better than my 2012 equipped with the same engine and a 3.55 rear. Highway mpg in both trucks took a dip above 65 mph.
I had a 2011 ecoboost 4x4 with 3.55s. Mileage seemed to improve after a few thousand miles. Much of my highway travel is East to West. On long trips, it generally got 18 mph driving West and 21-22 mph going East at 70 mph. Above 70 and mileage dropped.

I really liked the truck but had it in the shop three times in about a month at right at 60k for fairly major issues. Traded for an identical 5.0. The 5.0 gets a little less highway mileage and a little better city so averages about the same. It has less power than the eco, but sounds faster.
2013 F150 supercrew. Ecoboost. FX4, 3.55 gears. Cab high shell and a large wooden drawer unit in the bed.
29,000 miles.
50 miles round trip to work with 14 of it in town and 36 on the highway.

Average mpg 16.8-17
As high as 21.8 on a semi long (170 miles) highway trip.
Currently running a 2011 5.0, been very good so far, no issues at a bit over 30K miles. Highway mileage is 20-21.5 (US), city/suburbs is 17. Pulls 5300 lb trailer nicely, last trip was about 12 pulling the trailer through the mountains.
My brother runs a 6.2, slightly less mileage empty but definitely more power. His hauls his 8K trailer nicely.

I have a BIL who owns an older F-250 diesel. He works for Pirelli and can usually get some decent prices on tires from them. Last year he replaced his AT's with some mud tires. He said he lost 2 mpg with the more aggressive tire. May be part of the problem.
I wish all you Ecoboost guys a lot of luck!! I have a 2011 Ecoboost with 44000 miles on it. Now the list of troubles. 3 coil packs,3 plugs, 1 inter-cooler 1 timing chain after installed engine BLEW!!! Spun 2 bearings and threw a rod and heads scored. Ford installed new heads and a new block under warranty. The day they call and told me they would fix it I ordered a 2015 Platinum 5.0 with 3.55 rear.I told Ford that Chevy had a flagship engine years ago called a Northstar they said it was the greatest thing of all time 3 years later they SCRAPED IT! Never again will I have a Ecobust. But when it ran it was a freak! Good luck to all you guys.

I suspect you are probably right. I thought about getting an extra set of rims and tires for summer driving, but the prices on such things are ridiculous and I would never save enough money on gas to justify it.

I do love the truck, though.
The guy that sits across from me at work has one. They get about 8 towing their boat on short trips. We took it out to South Dakota a while back. Got about 12 with 4 guys and a boat. He said that they get about the same with 3 guys pulling 2 4 wheelers and whatever they take for elk camp. They get in the low 20's going to deer camp not pulling anything on 55mph roads.

Just keep an eye on Craigslist and you'll probably score a nice set of take-off wheels and tires for cheap. Seems like everyone has to install black wheels and mud tires on their brand new trucks.
4 of us took my 2012 Supercrew 4wd 3.73 axle 6.5' bed out to Wyoming on an elk & antelope hunt last fall. With a Leer cap to keep everything dry & locked (took a freezer, guns and gear for 7 days of tent life, along with luggage for 2 weeks, fishing gear, etc) a hitch haul on the back with generator and more gear, we averaged over 18 mpg on the way out. We brought back 3 antelope, 2 elk and you couldn't fit a thimble inside that camper it was so full. We looked like the Beverly Hillbillies on the way back. Over the course of a just over 5000K mile trip, our average was 17.1 mpg verified accurate at fill-ups. Mileage was affected the most through Wyoming where the speed limit is 85 and you're fighting a 20-30 mph headwind.

Btw, my tires are far from aggressive, but they do what I need.
Check out this tread on the F150 forum.... Would you buy another Ecoboost...One company has 30 Ecoboost with lots of miles!!!! not one problem......Couple of guys had problems with 2011s...1st year. F150 Forum
Just bought a Explorer Sport for the wife to drive with the Ecoboost. Only about 350 miles on it now but averages about 21 mpg in that vehicle. So far, pretty close to what her old Explorer did with the normally aspirated motor.
I just got back from a trip to east KY. 2014 F150 Ecoboost 4X4 crew 3.31 gears, I averaged 15 miles pulling my Ranger SxS. Thought that was pretty good. Same trip week before last without the Ranger was 19 average for trip. I was getting 12 pulling the same with my 2013 Tundra.
Just did a 350 mile road trip and the Ecoboost in the Explorer averaged 23.5 mpg on a mix of highway and interstate
Hey gents been a while.

Found a 2013 f150 with the EB and have been go giving some serious thought at trading Tacoma for it.

Anything specific I should look out for? Any major issues in the 13 model year?
I have a 2013 supercrew with the EB and 38000 miles. No problems yet.
Very nice truck.
I think I'll keep my Jimmie Duramax

I have one too. I'm pretty impressed with it. I have a powerstroke also, but it sure is not the same league as the dmax.

Turbocharged gas engines and towing sound like a recipe for disaster in the long run.

Get used to Internet mileage vs actual mileage, there is a difference. Don't be disappointed if your rifles don't shoot tiny groups like everyone else posts pictures of, either...
I looked hard before making the jump to a 2014 Ecoboost. I guessed it would do a couple mpg better than my 2004 with 5.4L, and that's pretty much what it gets - while still having a lot more power. I've seen as much as 19 mpg on a trip from Houston to Dallas, and that was running 75-80 much of the way. On rare occasions I've driven it around 65 for extended periods on the highway, and it was showing over 20 mpg. Headwinds, and speed make a huge difference in highway fuel economy.

The EB has a pile of low end torque, and pulls very hard. I also think people tend to enjoy the low end torque more than they admit. smile

Mine is a supercrew, 5½' bed 4x4, 3.73 gears. 3.55's would be a better all-around choice for me, but it will pull like a train as it is. smile
Now that I have 14,000 miles on it, the fuel mileage on my 2014 Supercrew 4WD short box Ecoboost has gotten better by about 2 mpg and sometimes a bit more. At under 65 mph on 2-lane roads I have gotten up to 19.1 mpg (up from 15 when new.

At freeway speeds it gets about 16.5 mpg now.
My 2014 EcoBoost with 3.31's gets an honest 2 mpg more in the city than an identical 2012 EcoBoost I had with 3.55's....
Well I can't speak to the eco boost, but my 4x4 F150 Supercrew with a 5.4 doesn't get the yardage (forget mileage) Emmitt used to get back win the Cowboys were winning, but then again that's how old it is also!
I am with Butch, I will keep my Crewcab 4X4 Duramax. Average 16.4 mpg that's good enough for me.
2015 with 3.5 Eco and 3.55 gears. I get 19.5 on hwy and 17 in the city.

Keep your Chebbies...no one else wants em. grin
My 5.3 Silverado is getting 20-23 on the highway, and 18-19 in town

I stopped at the ford dealership a few weeks ago and they had 17 F150- all 2011-2014 models with the ecoboost. The guy said he couldn't give them away. They aren't getting near the advertised mileage in the hills and towns around here. And from what i've been told repairs are outragous

Mine's also a 2014 EcoBoost Crew Cab 4X4 with the 3.31 gears.
Going to Colorado 2 months ago, I got 19 mpg all the way to Colorado Spings, and 21 mpg all the way back to Texas. I kept the cruise on 75 mph both ways, and it's 670 miles each way.
With the 36 gallon gas tank, I didn't have to fill up until Pueblo, CO, going up there.
Coming home, I topped off the fuel in Colorado Springs before I left, and I still had probably 3 or 4 gallons left in my tank, when I got back to Texas

And with the low torque of the EcoBoost, it really ate up the hills like they were nothing going up Raton Pass! Love my EcoBoost.

What is the name of this dealership? I have a good friend shopping for a 2013 or 2014 ecoboost right now. Unfortunately, most all here are asking so much it makes better sense to buy the 2015.

Thanks for your help.

Seems you are getting better MPG's than most, I just traded in my 5.3. Engine is a complete dog compared to the 3.5 Eco, zero comparison. Ask me how I like cylinder deactivation, complete junk and cost me major dollars. Old technology done wrong.

Ford sells tons of ecoboost engines, about 60% of their truck sales btw.
Ford sells tons of ecoboosts because of good marketing and dumb customers

This is the third 5.3 i've had and have not had annissue with any of them

So what about this dealership? Does it really exist or not?

Nevermind. Your previous response and the cricket chirps tell all I need to know.

If anyone seriously knows of a dealership that is deeply discounting past model Ecoboosts or they "couldn't give them away", please let me know. Thanks
tzone, I have two old ford bronco's( 1986 and 1990 models)that I use to drive around the deer lease. If one breaks I have a spare. That being said I also had a 2006 6.0l powerjoke that spent its 3 years I owned it in the shop. Blown head gaskets, turbo charger ate its self, ballooned the torque cover, power window motor failures, etc.... I traded it for a 2009 Jimmie not the Chebbie and have never been happier. The GMC has never seen the repair shop in the 6 year- 96k miles I have owned it. Good luck with your eco-boost, the fellows I know that have them haven't been as lucky as the rest you. Seems the intercooler causes the humidity down here to condense and slug the intake with H20 causing the motor to stall and the motors start burning oil ~100k. If you don't mind that, then by all means drive a Ford. Their answer for the stalling issue is to restrict the intake flow, I am sure that helps! LOL
I'm not sure of what parts the ecoboost in the F150 has in common with the one in the Police Interceptor but a neighboring police department is having major issues with theirs. Quite a bit of oil consumption, coil packs and turbo issues on their vehicles at less than 40K has lead to a lot of time in the shop for their cars. The naturally aspirated versions are not having these issues.
You guys see the new 2.7 liter ecoboost they are putting in the f150.. 335 horsepower 375 ft lbs of torque..ford is really pushing it bunch of incentives for them

They need to put that in a ford ranger, then I'd buy it... whistle

Karma is going to catch up to you with that attitude. Just wait until your fancy push button POS 4wd system goes to chit. You'll have to have the dealership flash the system and you'll be out your grocery money by the time they are done...GMC isn't the answer to everything, trust me.. wink
Small motors, alot of boost is tough on things.. Proceed with caution.

I had a 2011 w/ecoboost had well over 40,000 on it I had no issues with it. I traded it off and got me a F250, now looking at going back to a f150... BSA is your Chebbie still giving you grief??
79s, the 04 GMC 1500 4X4 had its tranny rebuilt at 111,000 miles, the transfer case was rebuilt a few months ago, the locker (G80) went out last year and I had to replace it, steering components were replaced with better Moogs and the powersteering is going tits up. The computer controlled push button autotrack 4wd is a pita. TCCM is shot, so that has to be replaced and re-flashed by the dealer. No other shops can flash the TCCM. I'm about ready to trade it in for an old dodge 12 valve cummins.... sick laugh
holy smokes that's alot of work...

Some people, if they didn't have bad luck, wouldn't have any luck at all! grin I drive GMC 1/2 ton 4x4's, and I am amazed at the list of bsa's troubles! I drove an '02 to 196k and didn't do anything to it but maintenance. Drove an '07 to 145k, same same. Currently drive an '11 6.2L MAX with 155k. This one I had the oil cooler and transmission lines replaced a couple of months ago, along with reflashing the ECM because it was reading the ethanol in the fuel wrong. Not bad. All these vehicles had the dreaded G80 locker, never had a hiccup from it on any of my vehicles. My plans are to retire before the end of the year, and my retirement pickup will be a '16 GMC 6.2L MAX.
Hope your "good luck" continues. My experiences have been closer to BSA's with my past GM's and Chevy's. Now drive Toyota's and have been exceptionally happy. No reliability issues anymore.
Truth be told I would drive a Honda if they made a 3/4 ton 4X4 diesel truck. Sure go buy a Dodge they don't have any issues other than the A/C/ heat go out, the dash cracks, the ball joints in the front in are crap, auto trans are crap and the steering recall. Anyone every try to pull the plugs on a 5.4L ford motor lately. They are all crap and its like finding a wife, you just got to find one that you can tolerate the crap that will come with them. LOL

I like that! Believe I will use that one myself! grin 'Course, I can be cocky, since I don't have a wife anymore.
Corollary to that is, no matter how hot they are, somebody is tired of her chit! grin
I have had three, so I do have a little experience. All the same brand though. Next one might be Asian though.LOL

I've had great luck with a '99 suburban with the vortec 5.7 litre. It's been a dream to own. It gets better gas mileage than my '04 GMC. I was hoping the GMC would do better since it is a smaller motor (5.3 LS1) and produces more horsepower. I really like the GMC and it gets around very well in the snow and such when out elk hunting. The locker is a good one, but probably failed when I got on it too hard on a corner: Slid the truck sideways on the pavement laugh. I'm hard on chit I guess... Seriously though, the truck is worth fixing. I like the body style, just not real keen on the push button computer controlled 4wd system that they are all going to:

LMAO rolling on the floor that is funny...!! laugh
Currently on my eleventh F150 since 1979, a couple 300 Inline 6's, a bunch of 5 liters and now a second EcoBoost. Wouldn't own anything but a Ford....
Ford in their XL trucks still use manual 4 wheel drive shifter. At least the 2014 still had them. Once you get up to the XLT then they go to the automatic 4 wheel drive system.
Fortunately, never had an F150 with a Triton engine....
Just got back from WA. 900+ miles each way. Averaged 19.4 on the way up with two guys and about 800lbs. of gear.

Speed was between 65-80 on the way up.

Averaged 18.5 on the way home. Drove straight through at a little higher speed. Needed to get home before I fell asleep.

2013 4x4 SuperCrew with the short bed and 3.55 gears.
36 gal tank. Just turned 40k miles and is almost ready for tires.
The Explorer with the EB is now at 2500 miles. Still about 18 in town and 22 on the highway, a bit better if 65 mph or less.

Looking at getting a 2015 F-150 with the EB, probably the 3.5 liter version vs. the 2.7. Just did a trip to MN with the current Avalanche with the 5.3 liter motor and the average for the 1300 mile trip was 21 mpg. If the EB will do that, I would be happy as the motor definitely has more pull than the 5.3
I am shopping for a new 1/2 ton but I cannot ever recall in 36 years of owning ever measuring fuel usage. Way low on the list of what I look at when I buy.
Me too, but people like to talk about it so I pay attention. It's a necessary eveil of having a vehicle so it is what it is.
I have to at least consider mpg, I commute 56 miles per day for work. Not a major factor, but a consideration.
