Anybody here using a roof top tent?

How do you like it?

Pros....Cons.....?

Use it in the winter? Winds?

I'm looking hard at this one for my 2012 Tacoma and mounting it on top of my Leer Canopy.

They're cool.
I'm seeing more and more of them.
On a 4x4 you can penetrate areas that are a no-go for conventional rigs.

I have an '09 Taco that has a Snug Top with the reinforced top.
It would be perfect for a RTT.

Presently I rig rig a heavy duty 9x12 tarp off the back of the Snug with Eureka 5'-9' tarp poles.
These are some of the best adjustable tarp poles available and an absolute must-have to make the system work.
Hard to find (Austin Kayak).

The reason I mention that is that you really need a covered cooking/sitting area as well as the overhead sleeping area.

The RTT's with the "ground floor" option look nice.

Also be sure to COMPLETELY dry out your tent system before long term storage for the longest service life.

Good to know! thanks

The one big problem with one is that if you decide to fish a section of the creek 2 miles away, you have to completely tear down camp and move. I prefer a separate tent so I'm mobile.

Good point.

Kinda hard to get down out of for a midnight whizz

What is the benefit of a RTT? I'm missing it.

They came from Australia and Africa where some pretty nasty critters come out at night.
Being up in the RTT gives you a few more seconds to bring the light and gun to bear.
In the US they give you a quick set-up in rocky, craggy, tent-unfriendly terrain.

Yeah, looks like an idea best left in Africa
Posted By: Rock Chuck Re: Roof Top Tent? - 11/24/16
I can't see that it would be any colder than a hammock. Either one requires a good insulating pad underneath you.

That CVT looks nice.
Heavier fabric looks like and nifty ground floor.

hint: pee bottle.

One of those should fit on a pack saddle ok. The problem is getting the mule to stand still all night.
Posted By: Direct_Drive Re: Roof Top Tent? - 11/24/16
Just name your Jeep "Mule".

LOL

We have one, but I built up a military trailer and it's mounted on there. That way no issues with having to pack it up to go off exploring during the day.

I have the exact model the OP posted on...built tough.

A Gatorade bottle is the answer.

Actually saw a couple of these while on a late-season elk hunt earlier this week. Both were on older Tacomas. Apparently they are catching on with some folks...

You still have to have a awning to sit and or cook under and the frequent flier trips for us old guys are no fun coming down the ladder at night. Pee bottles are great till your light goes out or you drop the thing in your sleeping bag. Dogs have a tough time getting up the ladder too not to mention going back down.

They were used a bunch when I lived in Australia. The ARB store there had a couple that looked hell for stout.

The boogie man is going for the ground-based fools first.
The guy in the RTT will have time to get a laser dot on him when all the commotion starts.

I think the idea of mounting one on top of a trailer is a great idea.
Posted By: Rock Chuck Re: Roof Top Tent? - 11/29/16
Mounting one on a trailer would be much better than on the roof. They only weigh a couple hundred lb so it wouldn't take much of a trailer to handle it.

They have some snakes in Australia that are scary bad. I would sleep on the roof too.

Hadn't thought about the boogie man. You're right, we will just pee of the top of the truck. smile

And the 'Monsters' that live under the truck at night, makes the ones that live under your bed at home look like pikers....

Pretty sweet!

I don't really see any advantage for US use and plenty of disadvantages already mentioned..In brown bear country, they would still be too low to offer any meaningful additional safety...

I like the one mounted on the trailer better, but mostly for the cool factor!

Personally, I like the free standing tents that hook up to the rear of the vehicle..In the military, we used a 9x9 wall tent that coupled to the back of a landy as a company Command Post and I have always thought it would make an excellent semi static hunting set up especially with an additional tarp added as a cooking porch...

The US army had a tent that attached to the back of an APC. We used the APC's as a radio shack and the tent for a headquarters. The problem was the APC's had gasoline fired heaters that were so noisy that you couldn't hear the radios or each other talking. Those heaters were a complete joke.

Harv,
Can the contents of the trailer be accessed while the tent is pitched?

Yup, the tent pitches out towards the side with hinges on the trailer lid. Works really good and open it often to get at stuff.
