No pics but just a basic 308 case expanded to 338 and fire formed, 45 grns of RL 15 under a 215 Sierra and a CCI 200 primer, I'll try to post a pic.

Only took one rifle to the range today - Ruger 77/50ML.

Twelve shots at 50 yds, 9 hits inside the 5" shootn-see. 4 braced, 4 sitting, and 4 off hand. Other 3 within minute of elk!

Guess what I'll be doing next saturday?

I use a Sako carbine in .358win, so I find the little 338-08AI of interest. That's a big stick in a little sa platform.

It might be an illusion, but the bullets in your picture look like they have some serious runout!

It sure does look that way, must be the camera lens. I did realize after posting the pic that the AI has not yet been fire formed. It's from a bunch of new 308 brass.

Just got back from the gym tonight, probably more important to my success than my rifle looneyism but not near as fun

PS after playing with hot rodded 416 Rigby's and 458 Lott's all these years my shoulder thinks the above rifles are kinda fun. Yours OK too?

338 on an 8mm Rem Mag Case? YIKES! I bet THAT kills an elk! Scares distant horses, shakes woodpecker's from the trees, scorches grass......

Counting my Grand Sons 338-06 (I keep it as he is in the service) I have six rifles that fire the 33 and one other that uses the 338WM case. Other than a Ruger 77 all are custom to some extent. I guess you could say I like them
Recoil has never been an issue and I never have shoulder pain from shooting. Recoil management is like swimming in fast moving water. You can fight it and suffer or you can go with it and have fun.
I agree with the Gym work. I try to work out at least three days a week. Lots of treadmill and sitting leg presses and then finish with some ab and upper body work

Thanks for the kind words. Works pretty good on Elk, Black Bear and African game as well. Eviscerated a warthog with it once with a head on shot starting at his neck/throat. Not too much different than a 340WBY, really, just kinda unique...and mine. Rifle looneyism gone amok

Elk can surely be killed dead with 243's and such, but I sure like it when they go down RIGHT NOW or at least leave me a really good and easy to follow blood trail, and a short one. Especially in thick forest or areas where there are other hunters who might want to put a hole in ones Elk and then try to claim it. Nothing like a big hole on both sides of the critter to do that.

Might it be that the gymwork helps with recoil management as well?

My 338-378 runs a 250 Nosler at 3010 and that's not loaded to max. I seldom use it as I made a mistake and had a brake installed and it's single shot as well.
It does slap and Elk, as well as blowing limbs off trees, making small rocks out of large ones, and setting off car alarms. (that last is kinda fun at the range)

I am with ya on the Brake thing. I had one on a 300WBy and this rifle (the 338/8mmRM) for a short while. Hate em.

Why is yours a single shot? need a longer magazine box and a relocated bolt stop, maybe?

I had it built on a Ruger #1 back in '95. That was when it was still a wildcat. I've learned a lot about rifles and what I need for hunting since then. A 338 WM will kill anything I will go after in a very positive manner, and a 338-06 is now my most used rifle.
At least it's the only one of it's kind as far as I know.

A friend of mine bought a Remington M700 SPS Stainless that he quickly rebarreled into 8mm Rem Mag. He left it in the factory stock and it weighed in at about 8 1/2 pounds field-ready. This thing kicked like a MULE. He had it ported and added a laminated stock to add some weight. At 9 1/4 pounds and ported, its not nearly so bad.

So much for my idea about magazine boxes and such!
I am so accustomed to discussions being about bolt guns the idea of your rifle being a Ruger No 1 did not occur to me. Got me on that one.

Yeah, my extra fast stuff is maybe more than I need, but not as much as I want..... grins.......

Well, I buy Noslers in bulk when I can. Keeps the variety down.
210s and 250s cover pretty much all my needs.

I am a 338 fan as well. I own 2 338 win mags and 2 340 wbys. this season I am mixing it up a bit and going with the new 340 wby I had built on an Encore platform.
I will be bringing along the 375 H&H Encore as well
(for those heavy days)
Both these rifles weigh under 8 lbs with 25" and 26" barrels. I put pro hunter Limbsaver buttstocks on them and it helps with the recoil and cut the packing weight.
I am going to try .338 225 gr.Accubonds @2900 this year being a long time 210 gr.Partition user.
260 gr. partitions @2800 from the 375.
I agree the recoil is something you have to learn to enjoy.

225TTSX's are deadly as well. And ACCURATE like nothing I have tried yet in my rifles.
