Federal Premium HIGH ENERGY 30-06 180 grain Nosler Partition
Unfortunately they're not manufacturinbg this load any longer and I don't reload. I've got a stash of a couple hundred rounds that should last for several years if I don't waste them at the range.

Right now 165 Accubond.... that may change after this fall.
200 grain speer hotcore
cheap, dependable and Ive loaded it and used it for easily close to 30 years plus with no failures or complaints from all the guys Ive loaded it for and hunted with.
try a 215 fed primer and 47-48 grains of WW760 its killed dozens of elk in the last 30 plus years

There is one in every crowd!
I've only killed one elk with a .30-06 and that was with 180 grain Winchester PP factory ammunition. I wouldn't hesitate to use any standard 180 grain cup-n-core hunting bullet on elk. The .30-06 has worked too many years to think it will not do the job anymore with standard bullets. That said I've swithched over to Accubonds on a lot of my .30 caliber bullets.

Gary O,
Whatever bullet shoots best out of the gun you're carrying. Put any reasonable bullet in the vitals and the elk will go down. There isn't any magic to killing them at less than 300 yds.
My old partner killed 23 elk in his life. The vast majority of those were with his Rem 722 .308 Win, shooting a variety of bullets.
I've only killed one elk with a .30-06. I shot it with a 150gr Hornady SP. The bullet went through a rib and a lung, and the elk died.
I have a lifetime supply of Jack Carter Trophy Bonded Bearclaws before Federal got ahold of the patent.
180 grain TBB's will be with me on every elk hunt from here on out.
Out of a 30-06 I use a Hornady 180 sp interlock.
When I use a 300 mag I use a 180 Accubond.

Me too!
150 grain Accubond last year did the trick....I'm shooting 180 partitions this year for the heck of it
Based on work at the range, I really like 180 grain Nosler Accubond and Partitions. Both are equally accurate out of my 300 win mag. I currently have it sighted in for Accubonds for an upcoming my first elk hunt later this year, but wouldn't hesitate using Partitions based on the advice of an old Wyoming elk hunting guide and friend.
The 180 Partition has worked well for me.
Since 1961 the 180 gr, 308 Partition has worked for me and several other hunters in our party. The PT Works the same way every time at every distance. Elk hate them
I like the 180 grain Hornady interloc. #3070 spire point/ flat base. Works great out of my 30/06.
First 20 years or so elk hunting used mainly Win 180grn Power Points with maybe a box or 2 of Silvertips thrown in.. Last 10 years or so Federal Premium with 180grn Partitions.
Sticking with the Partitions but can't say I ever had a problem
with any of them.
180 Partition... which is why I have over 900 qty. on hand
In my 30-06 I've loaded 180 Partitions and 180 Accubonds for elk. Wish I could say I'd killed an elk with either. I did kill a nice buck with the 180 AB through shoulder bone and out the opposite flank (dark liver blood). Good penetration there.
180 gr Accubond at 2750fps in an -06.
180 Partition... which is why I have over 900 qty. on hand
I smacked an elk a hair too far back with a 180 Partition (my goof)and he ran off a little ways and bedded, but I got him...other than that, everyone I shot with the 180 NPT went down very fast'and a couple were at the 450 yard marker or thereabouts...I shot them from 300 Win and Weatherby...the 165 Bitterroot started at 3250 from a long-throat 300 Win is a bomb;lotsa damage...I'd expect a Swift or NF to be similar.
The 165 NPT from the 06 works well;and the 200 gr NPT seems to penetrate forever.
First elk I ever saw shot was at about 350 yards with a 30/06 and plain old WW factory 150 Power Point;chest hit, his knees buckled and that was that...
I'm not sure I have a fovorite in 30 cal;lots of stuff seems to work well.
Although I use my 300 H&H for elk (180 TTSX) my 06' is my backup and I've loaded 168 TTSX's for it so I guess that would be my vote.
165 or 180 grain ballistic tip. Flinch
180 partition works well for me.
165 or 180 grain ballistic tip. Flinch
I just luv the 168 NBT...
Dober
Never needed more than a 200 grain SGK.
When a coworker asked me what I could load for him for an elk hunt, the 165 Interbond came to mind, lets just say I got some of the meat that year, was delicious, too.
Favorite .30? 180 Np with the 180 TTSX gaing fast.

My favorite for 20 years was the Nosler partition bullet in the 180 grn, then went to the 200 grn. I still think it is an excellent bullet.

I think you nailed it....and would venture to add, "at any velocity"....
180 grain Nosler Partitions.
My new favorite is the 200 grain AccuBond. In a WSM or Wby, it works very effectively.
I've had excellent performance from the 200 gr. Nosler Partition over 59 grs. of H4831. With a zero of a little over 200 yds. which is about +2.5 inches at 100 yds, I'm down about 7 inches at 300 yds.
I also like the 180 Sierra GameKing and the 180 gr. Nosler Partition over 58-58.5 grs. of Ramshot Hunter.
I want to try the 155 gr. Scenar over about 58 grs. of Ramshot Big Game. E
I know Ive already 'voted', but I must say... I havent shot an elk since 2003 and it was a 180 Fusion from my 30-06 at say maybe 30 yards (cow). I never recovered that elk but found lots of blood and trailed it for a solid half mile and nothing. Looked the next day too, never found her.
But, in Africa I shot a couple animals that were near the size of an elk and had nothing but perfection on all accounts.
168g TTSX and 165g North Fork - use them both.
180gr. NP's......foolproof, at least in my experience.
Movin' at 300WSM speeds.......the 180gr. TSX with the same resulting experience.

Agreed. It MIGHT be one of the best All Around BG bullets ever made.IMHO
looking back over this thread, I can,t help but think back on my early elk hunts with a 30/06 and ask why not have a 35 whelen or 338 caliber rifle, at least you can pack a 225-250 grain bullet and in my experience thats a minor advantage, worth having.
like I said before I started hunting elk with a 30/06 and it killed them, with a single well placed shot, but when I swapped to the 35, and 338 calibers with 250 grain bullets there was an obvious improvement in getting the ELKS FULL attention on bullet impact, they did,t get any deader , but they seemed to get hit a whole lot harder, and the distance traveled from bullet impact seemed to be shorter.
enough shorter that most of the guys I hunted with that were sworn 30/06 worshipers, bought slide action Remington 35 whelens over the years after they became available
After I killed my first elk with a borrowed .30-40 Krag I built my first centerfire rifle, a .30-06. I then proceeded to kill 8 elk with that rifle shooting 150 gr Hornady Spire Point and 180 gr Sierra GameKing bullets.
Then a friend showed me a .30 Gibbs shell and I thought it looked cool so I had my .30-06 re-chambered to .30 Gibbs. 21 Elk and 2 Shiras moose then fell from 180 gr Nosler Partition bullets from my .30 Gibbs.
A few years ago I built a .300 Weatherby, and last year my bull elk died from a 168 gr Barnes TSX bullet from it. It shoots 168 gr and 180 gr TSX bullets equally well, so the rest of my elk will probably be shot with either of those bullets. Unless it's raining.

Barnes bullets don't give good blood trails?
It had been the Speer 180 mag-tip hot core, cheap, tough, accurate,no longer available.
so 165 TSX is the current favorite.
180 gr. Swift Scirocco II...
I've killed a few elk with the 180 NAB's at 2775 from a 30-06. They work but I really like the 200 g NAB and I'm working up a load for it in the 30-06. I sold my 300 ultras and have a bunch of 200's to use. I'm getting over 2700 fps with the 200's over RL-17 from a 30-06.

180 Nosler Partition over 84.5 gn of H4831SC. Moves out at 3200 fps +/-15. Worked every time so far.
