I know its early but what will your go to rifle for this coming elk season ? I think I will use my Remington model 700 XCR II in 338 Win. mag or my XCR II in 300 RUM
.270 ruger or 30-06 interarms for the more open country, 300 savage 99 or 30-30 marlin for the thick stuff
Got a ton of shooting inbetween now and then to make up my mind!
Likely a moot point for me, about as likely to Elk Hunt as to winning the lottery, and I don't buy Lottery Tickets but there is a .300 Weatherby and a Mod 71 .348 Win. in the safe just in case.
Also a Ruger Super Redhawk .480 Ruger in case I really put the sneak on one.
Kevin
Bow in September.Prob .264 or 7mm Rem in October unless I acquire something new this summer.
Same for me...Archery in September. The new to me 280 AI that Lee built will probably get first nod. Its spitting out the 160gr Partitions and Accubonds under .5 MOA and hasnt been bloodied yet. 300 WSM Win Ex Weather will go as the back up Im sure, its rolling out the 180 Partitions just as well.
Its that time of the year, working on the out of state apps, and studying the units and odds. Sept cant get here fast enough!
If I can get the time later this year or the next, I`ll use my 338-378 Accumark w/4.5-14x40 VX3.
The new Berger 300 gr VLD hunting hybrids should be available by then. I`ll try those at around 2800-2850 fps MV.
Same as in years past 338 win mag and a 300 win mag as a back up or vice versa.
Tried all the newbies WSMs RUMs RSAUM and some Weatherbys, These 2 seem to work best for my type of hunting
Depends on the weather when I get up in the morning to go.
Gonna use my #1 in .375 H&H......
My Remington Hill Country 35 Whelen will be the rifle of choice.
Same one I've used for the past 30 years. Remington 700 in 30/06.
I wish I could go elk hunting, if I could it would be bow or my Ruger 30-06.
350 Rem mag, 35 Whelen or 375 Ruger...depending on which direction I plan to go out of camp in the morning.
Will take both my X-Bolt 300 win mag and Ruger 358 Win and the area we hunt will determine the one I use on a given day.
350 Rem mag, 35 Whelen or 375 Ruger...depending on which direction I plan to go out of camp in the morning.
Not to nit pick!!
What distinction is there for you between the 350RM & 35 W?
Guns themselves?
Bullets used?
? ?
Personal whim? I carry whatever gun I'm in the mood to hunt.
Just curious, no criticism.
Too early to know, but it has been a while since I hunted elk with the 7mm RM that was my only big-game-legal bolt rifle for 20+ years.
It will likely be one of the following, with a second for backup:
.280 Rem - Ruger #1, 140g TTSX, AccuBond or North Fork
7mm RM - Ruger M77 tang safety with iron sights, wood/blue, 160g North Fork
.30-06 Ruger M77 tang safety, wood/blue, 165g North Fork or 168g TTSX
.30-06 Ruger MKII, stainless/synthetic (boat paddle), 165g North Fork or 168g TTSX
.30-06 Remington M700, wood/blue, 165g North Fork or 168g TTSX
.300 WM Ruger MKII, blue/synthetic (boat paddle), 180g North Fork or 180g MRX
.338 WM Ruger MKII, stainless/synthetic (boat paddle), 225g AccuBond
All rifles have Burris Fullfiled II/Ballistic Plex scopes on them, in 3-9x or 4.5-14x.
I say "likely" because there is always a chance I'll find something I can't resist at a gun show...
bow in late aug and early sep. 270 win m70 sg for rifle season.
I know its early but what will your go to rifle for this coming elk season ?
My Encore pistol in .30/06. Got a deer with it last year and it is so addictive that I can't see me using anything else.
I will be carrying it if I get a moose tag too.
My Dakota 76 in 300 DAK shooting 180gr SAF's.
M700 in 7mm wby and/or M700 in 35 whelen.
338 RUM and my 300 RUM as my back up!
It will be my M70 300 H&H /legend with 180 TTSX's
Likely a moot point for me, about as likely to Elk Hunt as to winning the lottery, and I don't buy Lottery Tickets but there is a .300 Weatherby and a Mod 71 .348 Win. in the safe just in case.

Kevin
My choice this fall for elk hunting in Wyoming will be my Kimber Montana in 300 WSM.
Chuckbuster,
You could start your "fund raising efforts" for the elk hunt by selling me your Model 71.
Same as last year .. X Bolt 308 Stalker with 150gr Accubonds...
Banser Ultimate Ovis in .338 Win Mag using either 210 grain TTSX's or 225 grain AB's.
If my legs work:
338WM with 210 Nosler Partitions.
If my left leg works and I get a tag:
Probably my SS M70 Classic 338WM with 225 TBBC's.
If me and my new 84L Montana in .30-06 are getting along well I may hunt that. I need to use it quite a bit and get used to it though. It will be doing antelope and deer for sure.
30 Newton with 200gr partitions.
If my mashburn is good to go by then it will be it, otherwise my trusty 700 in 7RM.
Not sure yet:
53# Hoyt recruve bow
.50 T-C traditional muzzle loader
.375 Ruger Number One
I'll likely figure it out soon enough...
375H&H primary. Building a .300WM for a spare.
Well if I find some work, then I will plan on going to Colorado for the late season. My Blaser R-93 7mm RM could do with a change of pace. ELk would be just what the doctor ordered.
Tang safety 77 red pad 35 Whelen, Speer 250 grain SP.
Can't kill a elk with a 2011
284 win for me. 7mm-08ai for the wife - if her leg works.
Hoping to go after 2 years off.
.325 WSM Kimber Montana with 200 gr. Nosler Partitions.
350 Rem mag, 35 Whelen or 375 Ruger...depending on which direction I plan to go out of camp in the morning.
Not to nit pick!!
What distinction is there for you between the 350RM & 35 W?

Personal whim? I carry whatever gun I'm in the mood to hunt.

I also have a real nice 358 Win that would also work just fine...just a 35 cal rifle loony, I guess.
No real rationale. My 350 Rem mag is a 22" bolt and I have it dialed in for 250 yards, so it's more for open meadows. My 375 Ruger is a 20" Alaskan and more of a timber gun. My 35 Whelen pump is a 22" and is a new acquisition...so I just want to use it. I have it set up w/ a red dot, so it will also be shorter range.
Seems most of the area I hunt is getting overgrown and any these rifles will work well. Of course, a guy has to have a backup rifle in case one gets dropped and boogered up. And I need another for my son, so 4 rifles go to camp.
And, of course, I have to develop a load for each rifle...what a burden.
... a 35 cal rifle loony, I guess.

And, of course, I have to develop a load for each rifle...what a burden.
Yep, just what I thot.
A 'certified' loony. You don't need to ask how I know.
ps - thanks for the response.
Probably my Winchester M70 300 WM.
Same as always....Remington 700 in .338 Win. Mag. Probably go with my favorite Swift A-Frame 250 grain bullets, but have been experimenting with the same bullet in a 225 grain weight. Might end up using the lighter bullet.
Mark 5 ultra lite 300wby 150 grain ttsx
Lord willing I get to go, Savage 99C .358 winchester shooting 225gr sierras or maybe partitions, not sure which. At the ranges I'll be hunting I doubt it would make much of a difference. Hunting the San Juans in Colorado and most of the hunting I've done there is in timber so the shots shouldn't ever get over 200yds maybe 300. And to be honest that's really about my range limit anyway. Just got this gun and really looking forward to putting some loads together for it this summer.
God Bless,
MM
I know its early but what will your go to rifle for this coming elk season ? I think I will use my Remington model 700 XCR II in 338 Win. mag or my XCR II in 300 RUM
That depends on what tag I wind up with. There are 2 choices and I'm not really thrilled with my current rifles for either. I have a modestly adequate short range rifle and a modestly adequate long range rifle, but nothing in the middle to cover the bulk of what I'm most likely to run into.
Your .338 choice is one of my favorites and may be my selection. I've had 4 so far, still tooled up to load for it, dies brass bullets etc. I could say the same for .375, too, so it's not a slam dunk for either.
On the other hand, if I wind up with the more local tag, I may pass on a new rifle and get a new handgun. I want to kill and elk with a handgun and this could be my year to pursue that more seriously.
We'll see ...
If my hunting buddy and I are lucky enough to draw a tag It'll be
-M700 Classic in 35 Whelen 225gr Sierra as primary
-M700 Mt rifle in .280 140gr Partition as back up
or if we get our 3rd choice hunt
Thompson/Center Triumph
can't wait till draw results are out!!
Jon
A 56# Black Widow, and/or a 1993 M700 ADL SS Mtn rifle...270W of course, and/or a M700 ADL SS Mtn Rifle built from parts...270W of course........

Sako Finnbear 338 pre garcia
210 Nosler Partitions
Kimber MT 84L 270 Win:
7mm Mashburn Super......175 gr Nosler Partition
My Jan 2012 elk rifle was a .270. Worked fine with 130 Hornadys a below max load of 4831 at 350'ish yards.
7mm Mashburn Super......175 gr Nosler Partition
Cultist
My Jan 2012 elk rifle was a .270. Worked fine with 130 Hornadys a below max load of 4831 at 350'ish yards.
Similar here... late November cow elk hunt was the same 270 with 150 NBT at 2,900.
If im lucky enough to go this year i'll take my accumark in 340
Weatherby super biggame master in 338-06.
210TTSX or 225 accubonds pending summer practice and expansion testing at long range.
Primary will be my push feed Model 70, 300 Win Mag (66 Model)Nosler 180's.
Backup is my Model 700, 7mm STW, Nosler 175's
Both rifles sport composite stocks, custom triggers, and 3.5 X 10 Leupold BDC reticle scopes. I hunt mountains.
May bow hunt in Western Washington early season.
700 SPSS 300WSM 180gr ABs
Back up is Sako custom 7mm-300Wby 160gr ABs
Back up Back up is either Rem 700 ADL 270 Win 130gr Partitions or Ruger Hawkeye All Weather 270 Win 130gr ABs
Would really like to kill one with my 336 30-30
If I draw the coveted LE tag, then I will be toting my Model 70 in 7mm Rem Mag. If I don't draw a LE tag, then I may just lug my Knight Wolverine 209 in .50 Caliber around the hills. Only time will tell.
Either 30-338 on a 700 with #5 krieger in A3 sporter, or factory 700 280 in edge fill mcm game scout, supposing i can get the ladder put together in time.
Either my Ruger No.1 300 H&H of if heavy timber Ruger No.1 405 Winchester
Thinking it will be my FN Mauser in 9.3x62 and some 250 accubonds. Project almost done. Will take the Winchester 1895 in 405 win as backup. Love them big holes.
Dakota Arms 30-06 or Winchester 70 in 270
5.5 lb. HS Precision PHL 300 WSM, or custom 10 lb long range rifle in 7 mag. Depends on where I am hunting.
my 1903 in .35 whelen if I find the load it likes, my savage 116 in .300 win if i dont
my 1903 in .35 whelen if I find the load it likes,..
try the speer 250 grain bullets
http://www.speer-bullets.com/ballistics/detail.aspx?id=118Ive used 215 fed primers, seated the bullets out to max length that functioned 100% reliably, don,t get crazy worrying about velocity's, just find the most accurate load, anything from 2375fps to 2500plus works fine
IMR 4064
WW748
H380
IMR 4320
they all resulted in decent accuracy in my 35 whelen with that bullet and it works really well on elk
I have a 7x57, .270, .280...etc.
Need is really not the issue, is it?
Primary Tikka .300WSM again with 180 tsx. Backup Ruger M77 Boat paddle .270 with Hornady Interbond 130gr.
Both work well on animals for me last year.
If I opt for elk in CO over a Pike County, IL whitetail hunt I will be choosing between my 3 model 70's in 270 WSM, 300 WSM and 30-06. Leaning towards the 270 WSM w 140 Accubond's due to familiarity.
7mm Mashburn Super......175 gr Nosler Partition
I plan to use the simpleton's version of Bob's combo. Winchester M70 in 7mm RM with a 175 grain Partition.
I have 15 points for Limited Entry Elk in Utah, so I have a good chance of getting a really good tag.
Chet
Custom 338-06 w/ 225 AB's or it it gets done in time, possibly a .375 Chatfield-Taylor with 260gr Accubonds. Fat chance getting drawn in AZ for a cherry though...
Savage Sporter in 25-20. But to be humane and ethical, only neck shots at less than 50 yds.
Chet
Chet good luck on that limited tag!
Sneak 10 yards closer, the 7 mag will work fine...
Iffin I get to go this year I'll carry the old standby rifle in 338-378 WM, using the 225 TTSX's at 3375 fps.
If the new 300 gn Accubond is out soon enough and the rifle likes em, Ill try those
Gunner
Oh and backup rifle is a Ruger tang safety in 338 WM with 250 SAF's at 2750.
My .300 Wby Vanguard with a 168 gr TSX, unless its raining that day, then it will be my Rem 700 stainless in 7 mm RM with a 160 gr Accubond.
280AI....if I don't get on more elk this year than I did last I might as well have a bb gun though.....grin
Going to change my luck this year by carrying my Kimber 84M Classic in .308 Winchester. Just bought some TTSX bullets to try in it.
Backup will likely be my Modely 70 .300 H&H.
Cool! That'll do.
I'm not changing anything (I think). Be bringing two rifles to camp- a M700 XCR in .338 with a shortened barrel, and a 7 WSM Kimber Montana.
..... unless I get a wild hair and buy that .350 mag I saw cheap... or a Kimber Whelen <g>....
If I draw, I will be borrowing a muzzleloader!
If I end up with an elk tag this year most likely I'll tote my Weatherby Accumark 30-378 stoked with 200 gr Accubonds at 3200 fps. Target turret for dialing in yardage.
If I pul a tag, M700 LSS 338 RUM with the new 300 gr AB.
JD338
Same old, Sako AV classic in .35 Whelen with a 3-9x50 Zeiss on top. 250 Hornady at 2500. It kills 'em.
Kimber MT 325 WSM...
If I have to hunt that hard and climb all that much to get skunked, I'm doing it with a light rifle.
M70 3006 Springfield that shoots the 150 TSX real well.
Should draw a late season cow tag this year. Hopefully I can get on one with my 10 & 9 year olds along again. They were a riot last time...
I never really Know until I walk out the door. Maybe just an old re-barreled Pre-64 in 7RM. What I do know is a Nosler Partition will be the star of the show.
remington 721 30-06.after reading some of these maybe i need a 416 rigby, damn you guys must hunt monster elk
1. LH Sako AV 35 Brown Whelen/225 Partition
2. LH Rem 700 .308Win/TTSX?
3. LH Sako AV .375 H&H/260 AB
A 300 mag of some variety would be optimum for my planned hunt but gotta go with what I got.
Steve
I just wish Oregon let you hunt with more than one discipline of weapon for your one tag. I am a primarily a bow hunter who loves to rifle hunt as well. Heck even muzzle loader.
If going rifle, I would love to use my - new to me - .358 Norma Mauser with the 1.75 x 6 Luepy VX III. 250g Speer
Commercial Mauser in .35 Whelen. Bear
Finnlight 85 300 Win Mag/ 4x12x50 Z3 Swaro/ 180 Accubonds
Backups...
SS 85 300 WSM/3.5x10x50 VXIII/180 TTSX
Kimber 300 Win Mag/ 3.5x10x50 Zeiss/180 Accubonds
Ruger 270
Savage 243 as a back up
More than likely one of these two:
.300sav (need to work up a load)
or
Mosin (150gr tsx)
If i get my eastern oregon tag probably the mosin for the extra range. If i hunt western brush probably the Savage for the handiness.
Prolly my Krag-Jorgenson .30 US Army with Redfield receiver sight. Haven't decided if I'm going yet......
BN
7mm Rem Mag/ 150 TTSX if I draw or I'll be watching one get killed with a .300 Win if I don't.
Kimber 280AI, 160 Accubond.
.270 Win./ 150 partition, M700 BDL, Pac-Nor, B&C Mountain rifle stock
Backup this year will be the new FN M70 Fwt, 7-08, 140 Accubond, possibly the 120 TTSX.
More than likely be hunting a lot of dark timber, so long range shots will be few and far between.
300 wsm handloaded 180 Hornady interloks at 2950fps
I would be torn between my M54 Win. in .30-06 with Lyman 48 peep or my Sako .375 H&H with Leopold 3X. The Sako because I haven't shot an elk with it yet.
For me it will be my -06 or 45-70. I am looking forward to taking something with the 45! Hopefully Moose also!
Waaaaay too soon to commit, when I have all summer to work them all out!
I am sticking with my 300 win mag and 180 accubombs, it's been a big success
4 me
8mm Remington Magnum 220gr Sierra's
Picked up a new Ruger Hawkeye African in 9.3x62 in a trade here on the 'fire. Haven't shot it yet, but if it shoots up to my expectations, it will go to elk camp with me this year along with my No. 1 in 9.3x74R.
prob my old -06 that likes to go just about every time I leave the house...
Unless I get that .280 project done that I started forever ago.
Mine will be a .260 Rem shooting 120gr TSX.
300 WBY stainless fluted, 7mm WBY Accumark or my Remington 700 Thumbhole laminated stock, stainless fluted in 300 WSM, all topped with Leupold glass.
I'll take the same 2 as last year a 264 and a 35 whelen. It's really hard for mr to pick a favorite out of these two.
Ruger M77 MkII stainless in 30-06 loopy 3.5-10 180 grain partitions 58 grains hunter.
Picked up a new Ruger Hawkeye African in 9.3x62 in a trade here on the 'fire. Haven't shot it yet, but if it shoots up to my expectations, it will go to elk camp with me this year along with my No. 1 in 9.3x74R.
Oldest son loves his Hawkeye in 35 Whelen! And I know for a fact that the 9.3 x 62 is deadly on elk! While on our spring hawg hunt, I was able to put a few on paper with this years rifle of choice. One of my beloved Krags. However four and a half feet high at 150 yds didn't seem appropriate for a good rifle, and giraffe are not on the menu this year. So, being I was off today, I spent the morning sweating a new front sight ramp on my rifle of choice!
Now back to the range! Oh, I just picked up another Model 12 last week so I decided to throw it in the photo too!
Bob N.
You dog! I don't know how you remain solvent...
You dog! I don't know how you remain solvent...
Well,,,,,,it IS a full-time job....... Almost!
BN
It'll be the 270 WSM Montana or the old 300 Ackley... Depends on the day.
If I was to hunt elk this year I would be using this.
Probably kill a pig with it and hopefully my first deer.
7STW M700 with .338 WM Tikka T3 backup or vice versa.
Assuming I draw a tag this year I'll be using a custom Mark V chambered to 378 Weatherby firing 270 grain TSX bullets. Unless of course my experiments this year with the 250 grain TTSX prove fruitful, then I might convert to those.
If it's not raining (I need to re-blue it) - my sporterized M1917 Enfield in 7mm Rem Mag. That gun may look like a beast but it's a tack driver. This year I took a late season cow off hand (sitting) at 165 yards, neck shot, with only 1" of the shoulder and the head/neck showing. I hit it 1/2" from where I was aiming.
Raining/Snowing - Rem 700 CDL in 7mag. Unless I find a Sako 75 or 85 also in 7mag to replace it.
Me and the 338-06 will be hanging around this saddle again.
Either my Pre64 .270 Fwt in hunters edge stock or my trusty 700KS .300 Win Mag ... I'll probably take both.
This one will do me fine.
70/300WSM cut to 23"
Edge handle
Talley
3-10 Leo w/M1
155 Scenar
Montana 1" sling
Dober
Dober I've said it before, but that thing is a sleeper! Where are you keeping your drops? (noticed you're running the M1).
I only need to bring one like usual....:
Ruger m77 MKII 338 win mag with Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 with firefly reticle:
Shoots like this with 250gr. sierra gamekings...
and maybe even this one to break it in real good after I get some cerekote on her (ruger m77 tang safety 300):
I'm hard on my hunting rifles and the rugers are my workhorses. I had to re-paint the floorplate on the 338 win mag after last elk season....pushing through the manzinita is hard on them....
DOBER: I'm glad to see you will be using the 155 scenars in your 300 shorty. I just bought 500 scenars today as a matter of fact. I can't wait to try them in my 308's...
I like all of your Ruger's BSA. So when are you taking me elk hunting?
I like all of your Ruger's BSA. So when are you taking me elk hunting?
Anytime im hunting general season....come on down...I may get lucky and finally get my cow tag this year though (probably not but you never know). Have 6 years worth of preference points....
I like all of your Ruger's BSA. So when are you taking me elk hunting?
I almost took the 300 down to get it cerekoted today but had to work on my cars
...Changed an axle on one and radiator on the other....
500 bucks for a elk tag!
You could always come down and hunting pigs here. You can even use your elk rifle.
Dober I've said it before, but that thing is a sleeper! Where are you keeping your drops? (noticed you're running the M1).
Tanner, I have them on my LRF and on the orange sticky on the side of the gun.
Dober
That's a good idea! I was wondering what the little orange guy was doing on there
Tanner-one of my challenges (of many) is that I need reading glasses these days. So...if my cheat sheets too small I can't read it on the fly. The orange dots make it kind of handy cause the black el marko shows up well on it.
As you might well imagine it isn't exactly time efficient to go for the cheaters (reading glasses) while the elk walking across the ridge.
Dober
My dad is in the same boat. Time to bust out the monacle!
What're you running drops out to? 600?
700-but for the most part I don't shoot at game much over 500 anymore.
The glasses things is one of the reason I like dotz. I can easily see the dots...
Dober
I hear ya, I'm going to have to come up with something quick like that for the Montana. Maybe I'll get a pirate flag sticker or two

Partition bullets 175s probably, accurately pushed by some retumbo powder at 2950 fps for elk across distant mountain sides or in the tag alder jungles and thick timber stands.

I am looking into new arrows, those and ICS Bowhunter's are near the top of my list.

Mine does a little faster than that with 175s and Reloder 25

Nice nice rig! If'n it's a bit lonely this fall send it my way. I'll be sure and take it on a few hikes....

Thx! I hope to keep it busy hiking in Southern CO and shooting elk. And then a few deer in VA. Adding a MT elk could be in the cards too!
Now you're talking!
Any chance you've ever ran the 180 NBT thru it? I'd sure love to run those in a lil 33.

I have shot lots of NBTs. Have a few hundred as my plinking load. They run in the mid 2700s, but I have not got the consistent accuracy out of them that I do out of the 185 or 160 TTSXs. Not bad mind you, just not quite as good. I do intend to use them as my deer load next year though.

Mostly use an old tang safety Ruger in 7mm rem mag wearing brand new leupold vx-III 2.5x8-36 glass
Partition bullets 175s probably, accurately pushed by some retumbo powder at 2950 fps for elk across distant mountain sides or in the tag alder jungles and thick timber stands.
2950! Has that load been across a chronograph?
Yep. low deviation and 5 shot average 2948 fps to be exact.

Uhhh...that sounds good. I'm going to have to give that a try..
If I can wrangle the permit,7mm Mashburn Super and 175 NPT at a hair under 3100 fps;or 270 Winchester and 130 Bitterroot.
It better be one of these two because that's all I have anymore,at least for the time being.
But then again, that's all I need...
300 RUM in a Rem 700 with Nosler Partitions180's at about 3250 fps and a Zeiss 4.5-14x44 with a Z800 plex. Backup is a 7 STW with either 175 or 160 Partitions and the scope keeps getting changed but it probably will be a Nikon 4-14 of some sort with a mil dot on it.
Well, this would be the first year without my 340 B. I had a lot of confidence in it.
Depending on circumstances it would be a 284 or a K95 30/06, both lightweights, the first ultra-so. If flatter, kinder country would avail, it would be a Kilimamjaro 350 Rm or a Ruger AFrican 375 R.
150-gr, 168-gr TTSXs at 2950 and 2875 fps respectively for the first two and a 225- TSX for the 35 at 2800 fps (225-gr Nos Part?) and either the 260-gr Accubond or the 250-gr TTSX in the 375 at 2950.

Bob, the wives arent around. You can admit you have more than two rifles ready to go,LOL!
Just an old smokey, smelly muzzleloader.
Up close and personal.

Forgot to mention the 375H&H, but that is for BIG stuff...

Big fan of the 300 win mag here!!

It's looking like a 270 WSM will get the nod this year. I looked at another .300 Jarrett, but I've grown tired of heavy recoil. Found a NIB custom Kirby Allen that's going to find it's way here.
I getting married day after tomorrow, so this is kind of a single guys final act... another way of saying a handy excuse to buy a new rifle.
I hope to go with my son for his first elk hunt this year.
I'll be taking my .338-06 and he'll have a LVSF/TI in 7mm-08.

You know how many guys around here use the same set-up (sans the scope, more like a 3-9x40).......Hard to beat a good ol ruger m77.....whether it be tang safety or MKII......
Yes. If one wants to stay vogue, we will have to wait and see what the summer releases reveal. One would not want to be seen carrying the same unit he packed last year.
If I make it out elk hunting this fall will take my new Ruger 416 Rigby.
I understand it is not necessary to use such a large cartridge, but I want to, and at least I'm sure it is big enough.

Daughter a Rem MR in 7-08 w/140AB & for myself a SR mauser 30-06AI w/180 AB
Thats the same caliber and bullet I set my youngest daughter up with when she was 12. She killed 4 elk and 4 deer with it before going off to school. I used it last year to kill a cow and a mature bull.
Hey Brad:
I love 'em. Great round.
We did go last year and she got a look at one. She was so geeked she applied, got a job and moved to Colorado...
Nary a peep out of our mutual friend...
Best,
tom
Tom, PM Sent.
Where did you end up going? I can understand her moving to CO. I've been here all my life and am still excited about living here. Feel free to drop me a line when you come out to see her, maybe we can have a cup of coffee. Where did she move to?

The current thread about the 8 x 57 reminded me of the 8mm-06 I've got stashed somewhere. I built it many years ago to take elk hunting, but just never got around to it. Wonder if I can find my loading data for it!
Good thread!, Now I have a summer project to get that old 98 shooting again.
I'm gong to amend my earlier post.
I recently picked up a Ruger M77 RSM in .375 H&H. took it to my range last week and after one fouling shot I shot two three shot groups - 3/8" and 7/8" with some 260gr. Nosler partition hand loads that it came with.
Nice "new to me" rifle, new caliber for me, very very accurate, so my old Sako Classic .35 Whelen may just stay home this season.
Hey Brad--will send you a PM about the hunt and the kid after I get these alligators back in the pen.
She took a job in the Fort Morgan area. Her sister is in LA and they appear to be in process of dragging their baby brother "out there"
Well, if CCH and I get our cow tags, it will be my Rem700 in 7mmRM... Probably a 175gr Partition over Retumbo... Looking forward to seeing some elk soon, not many here in IL..

Formed from 8x68S brass. IIRC, Ackley talked about turning off the belt on a belted mag case.
Take 2 on the trip - one as backup. A 376 Steyr scout and a 338 win mag Browning Abolt.

Who cares really.... I knew what you meant and still agree, that is one fine choice in rifle and optic......For a "do all" deer elk, bear, you name it combination I'd reach for that one every time......Just shot my old tang safety 300 win mag after cerekoting it and re-checking scope adjustment and that thing is still impressing the heck out of me.....Ruger 77's are hard to beat for a fine, dependable, tough as nails, accurate hunting rifle....
If I get my Kimber's in '06 and .375 H&H completed and get used to them enough to be confident I will hunt one of those.
If it will shoot TBBC HE loads I would particularly like to use the 84L.
Otherwise, I have a really nice .338 and an '06 FW that will serve again.

Ha, no joke. Our genius governor is working to eliminate Oregon tax exemption to raise revenue in WA. Guess she doesn't know what will happen to all the WA border towns and businesses once OR residents realize they don't get tax exemption. They'll just stay in OR and spend their money there.

It would help Oregon even more than the shoppers from Washington who make major purchases in Oregon.
The new 270 WSM came. 6 3/4 lbs of custom shooting machine, able to leap tall mountains at a single bound and kill elk DRT with a single shot! If you shoot well you don't need a 338!!!
Brad I want to see this 270WSM!

If you can't handle one then you should stick with your 270......
Didn't say I couldn't handle one, just that I don't need it. I shot a 6 lb 338 Win mag for a while, a 7 lb 358 STA, an 8.5 lb 458 Win mag, another 6.5 lb 300 WSM. They all killed elk effectively, and after 30 some years guiding elk hunters here in Colorado I've had plenty of occasions to see them fail too, because of a poor shooting IMO.
After being in on the taking of several hundred elk over the years I am of the opinion that the real advantage of the fast magnums is in extending one's range, if one is up to that task, and the slower mags, like the 338 win mag just add more thump. Impressive perhaps, but not necessary, again IMO.
I shot both my elk last year with the 7-08 my daughter used when she was a kid. Why? Because it's a nice, pleasant little gun to pack around and shoot, and it is fully up to the task.
C'mon Brad I'm dying here, let's see the Kirby Allen 270wsm!

Shot them, but they ran off wounded, I expect.
I'm just kidding. I've hunted elk with the mighty 7-08, didn't connect but I wasn't worried about my rifle! What bullet did you use, Brad?
Ya, I had to chase them down and wring their necks, you know, like wing shot ducks.
Okay, maybe not... I was using 140 gr. Accubonds.

I bet that 358 was a thumper on both ends. What bullets did you like in that one?
Tikka T3 stainless 270 Winchester 4x12 Vortex Viper. Shoots like a frikin laser.
S W E E T rig. How do I know? It's one of my 2 FAVORITE rifles.
I've applied for an Elk permit in Ark. this yr. Actually I've applied EVERY yr except 1. 1 yr I let it slip my mind.
IF, IF I get drawn in 2012, I'll take 2, 1 as a back up.
Tikka T 3 SS 270 Win, 4-12 Swift, 150 gr NPT.
Win 70 Winlite 300 WM, 4-12 Swift, 180 gr NPT.
I have other rifle, cartidge combos that are elk capable but these 2 are the LIGHTEST and SWEETEST.
I was shooting the 250 gr. Hornady's. Speed was 2880 through the chronograph. Yes, it was a thumper. I shot several elk with it and it was effective, but I was not sufficiently impressed that it killed them any deader or faster than any other rifle when shots were well placed.
That one started as a .300 Jarrett and was rebarreled after being shot out. That was the most impressive elk killer I've used. It was pushing 200 gr. Accubonds at 3020 fps, and had heavy recoil as well.
Still, it was more gun than necessary unless it was going to be used somewhere way beyond 500 yards, and that opportunity never came up. Except for one, all my elk have been within 300 yards, and almost all less than 200. The two longest were around 400 and 500 yards, and I took them with an '06 and 180 gr. bullets. It did the job nicely.
Mine will be .50 caliber, only question now is whether it'll be a bull rifle or a cow rifle.
Mine will be .50 caliber, only question now is whether it'll be a bull rifle or a cow rifle.
Depends on whether it has a "bull barrel" on it.......
For me it will be the custom Interarms Mark X Whitworth with a 26" 7mm STW tube on it. It is set in a B&C stock and I got a trijicon accupoint 3-9x40 abd I can't wait to get out there. Second rifle season in SW colorado that is.
Win M70 EW in 338 Win Mag... Scope, TBD... I've got a Loopy VX-I 3-9X40 on it right now... but once I recover from my tax day blood letting, I'm planning on putting either a Loopy VX3 or Zeiss Conquest on it.
My 18 year old son will be shooting a Rem 700 Ti 300 Win Mag, same exact situation with the scope... TBD.
Both have ended up being tac drivers, even with the temporary glass...
Either my Ruger M77 in 300 WM, or my Marlin 1895 in 45/70, or maybe a 7x57....
After my day out shooting today, I think the 300 is a lock, it's always been the one rifle I've owned that I feel it's a guarantee that whatever the crosshairs are on its going down. Now that it has a Mickey on it that I got from Karnis, it's a no brainer!

Drive it like you stole it, bone it like you own it!
Picked up a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 NP-R2 reticle and Zero-Stop turrets for the 270 WSM. Dies are in, brass has shipped, just need scope bases to arrive and this years' elk rifle will go together.
cobrad you like the scope?
Haven't had a chance to use it, still waiting for bases. I did attach it to another rifle just to make some comparisons. Looking out my window at a hillside 567 yards out it has sufficient resolution to pick out very small targets, but compared to my S&B set at the same 10 power it is like looking at two different hillsides. I bought the NF for the turrets first, and reticle second. It is definitely a compromise. I had thought to go Swaro Summit or one of the new Leica ER's for the outstanding glass, but I use my turrets a lot and, for me, good glass without absolutely reliable turrets does not work like adequate glass and proven turrets. Too bad NF does not use best quality glass.
Still waiting to see the 270WSM Brad!

Agreed on the first sentence, and negative on the second. I think the glass is very good, but $1,400 is enough already. I don't want to pay for S&B glass....
I got the scope mounted last night, settled the rifle on a bipod and scanned little rocks on the hillside across the field at around 550 yards. The light was getting dim, end of legal hunting time dim. I believe I would have had sufficient resolution to still shoot varmint size targets, certainly deer size. Turning the magnification down to 6 brightened things up a lot.
This is looking to be one sweet rifle.
Tanner, I don't have a means of posting the pic on this site. PM me if you do and I'll send it to you.
Brad's WSM! Yeehaw, heck of a rig.
Question for you Tanner. What the hell is on your feet?
Brad's WSM! Yeehaw, heck of a rig.

Not my feet! You'll have to ask Brad.
My Feet. A funny looking pair of crock-like things called Mion.

)
Tanner, thanks for posting the pic.

If you go Conquest, go 3-9x40. You'll crap your pants in glee at the long, constant eye relief (and great optics, and great price). It's what's on my .338 and I think it's absolutely perfect.
I'm going on my first elk hunt this fall with a buddy in Montana. I'm taking either a Model 70 Extreme Weather in 300 WSM or a Kimber Montana in 280 AI. I bought the Model 70 just for this hunt, but I'm quickly falling in love with that Kimber.
You bet Brad, no problem.
Looking at 3 trophy unit bull tags this year. Back is Sako M995 in 30-378 with 32" Pacnor tube and 42 power Nightforce. Front is Remington 700 in 338 edge 29" barrel now wearing a Vortex Razor HD. Elk are going down this year.
Elk are going down this year.
NOT if it's based on the 'looks' of those stocks!
Where do you find elk on 'Target Ranges"?
Hey Guys - my previous post was meant IN FUN
NO INSULT INTENDED.
None taken. I live in the rookies at 6000ft and climb to 10000ft about 15 miles away. All I need to do to see elk is get off the road, at the top of a mountain. I do have a 300wm to carry around though. I dont carry those guns anywhere but to the top of the mountain where all the elk can be seen.
Thanks for your response. I was concerned it may have offended you.
? where are the 'rookies'?
I get so aggrivated at myself. I 'proof read' my post 2-3 xs and still miss mistakes. It happens even to GWs here on the fire.
Good Luck Hunting

I live in Nucla, Co which is south of Grand Junction. I have a 1400 yard range. The 338 edge is new and so far its shooting 1" group at 300yards, hoping to sweetin that up a little and go out and shoot some longer ranges.
