How about your "as it lay" pictures. Pictures of how it fell and how it was lying when you got to it before posing it.
This bull fell right on the public private boundary line, he was about ten feet in public when I shot him. The barbed wire laying on the ground by his feet is the property line.
This old cow fell in her tracks with a neck shot. I had hit the backcountry where the bull in the previous picture was taken the year before without any luck. When I got back to my ATV there were fresh tracks along the two track it was on and I dropped her about 70 yards from my scooter, right in the trail. I don't usually go for neck shots but about ten feet away was a very steep drop that I didn't want to pack her up.
I wish I had a pic of a moose my partner shot a few years ago. He was alone at the time. It was standing between 2 large rocks and it dropped straight down, wedged between them. There was no way to move it at all. He had to skin and bone from the top down. It took him 6 hrs to bone it and it came out in confetti sized pieces.
2011 (only took a pic of the head for some reason):
2010. Not sure how he managed this, but this is exactly how I found him:
Last year's - walking up to him...
Thanks, it was too cool a veiw to pass up.
Outstanding all the way around!
Nice. A small push and you'd have ready-to-use hamburger meat. Mut have been a lot of fun working around that ledge...
Wolves have pushed them into chukar country in parts of my world.
Not an elk, but this is probably my favorite.
A few more inches and we never would have gotten to him without technical climbing gear.
We caped and cut him up right there. It was pretty exciting.
(This was a client's sheep)

Very cool.
Someday........
I should start putting in for the Idaho draw.

Blood and body fluids would freeze on the rock making it treacherous.
I field dressed that entire elk with one hand while I clung to the rock with the other.
When guts would slide off the rock it seemed like it would take a very long time before we heard them hit the ground below. That evergreen pictured was a VERY tall tree.
I can tell that's a long way down! I would have had a hard time doing that!
Had a dickens of a time getting him rolled out of those rocks and the juniper so I could get him field dressed.
Thanks.. I've got to learn to slow down and take more pics, really like the "as they lay " pics.

True dat.
Hope Scenar' posts his pic of the bull waded up in that hole.
The dew rag oughta tell you this wasn't as easy one....
The dew rag oughta tell you this wasn't as easy one....
You were styling though.
Nice bull.
Trust me...the dew rag aint a good sign.....it took an aggregate of 7 people, two horses, and three days to get him out of that hole...
Some bulls just aint worth shooting.
Some bulls just aint worth shooting.
Shoot where you find them.

Did they EVER hunt with you again?
Not an elk but...
I'm waiting on Scenar to put up my fav where elk lay pic
Dober
And 4 darn sure we need the 70/168 timber elk of yours Mac!
Dober
Exactly as a matched set was found.
Mulie
doggie
I've got pics of my moose and a couple other bucks and bulls around here too somewhere.
Nice pics. Everybody needs a a dead doggie.
And 4 darn sure we need the 70/168 timber elk of yours Mac!
Dober
Ha! Well, it's not really a genuine "as it lay" photo so...
still one of my all time favs, so we're waiting....grin
Dober
(the casa is looking great there uni-builder, but you sure wouldn't get me out on the roof hanging like you were doing this morn!)
Dober, I'm so used to it I hardly think about it... got half of the main roof sheeted today... not too bad for an old dude by himself
Here's an "as it lay" from last fall...
Great shots scenar.
Going back through this is the only one I could find. Him hanging up on that doug might have saved me the better part of 1k vertical feet. I'll have to start remembering to take more of those types of shots.
Beautiful pictures all. Starting to get pumped. We are having our "pre trip" planning breakfast tomorrow morning to sort out the details. 31 days till we leave. Feel like a kid counting days until Christmas...
Nice pics. Everybody needs a a dead doggie.
don't get Pat started on that.....
Laffin, that might blow up Ricks site.
Pat, is the rifle with the buff' the same rifle in all your older deer pics?
Pat, never seen this one posted before, but I've got to say, that is one of my all-time favorite pics as of today. Just awesome.
My best bull....nets 358 2/8"
Laffin, that might blow up Ricks site.
Pat, is the rifle with the buff' the same rifle in all your older deer pics?
Sako .220 swift. I used that a lot back in the day...
Pat-still missing my fav pic of yours, hint think elk in a hole...grin
Dober
Just for you........grin!
That's THE one! Great bull, and what a fubar spot...<g>
Fun aint it
Dober
Tom, any bull is a trophy..in regard to your bull shown here and a few others, I have an older friend who in contemplating such situations, would just say, "no way to do it but jus' go in with a fryin' pan an' a fork."
SO, elk are regal, deer are great, but it's the beauty of a "rooster" pheasant I never get over.
Nice pic's everybody. I'd add some but am on my Ipad away from home and can't.
One that Beefan shot, I was just an observer...

Thought so. So much for the 223 being to small for deer. <grin>
Here's my 6x5:
Mark...looks like he tried to gore you, and ripped off your scarf before you got the better of him...
That's a pile of bear scat in the foreground, one of the biggest blackies I've seen got to the elk just before we did. I took the pic in case I got checked by the DOW becasue the bear ate the gonads off the elk, and in CO, you've got to leave them attached.
Cow elk with RRH in 45 Colt.
58" Kudu. Not an elk but just as regal.
This thread was on the elk forum, right?
I like it! But that silver scope is blinding my eyes!
This thread was on the elk forum, right?
Yes, it was but since there were some pic's of other game, and this was one of my "as it lay", I thought it would be ok--following precedent. No?
George (goodnews)
Thought that was a cool shot of a kudu, actually. Is an elk forum, but elk hunters hunt other stuff, too. There are coyotes, pheasants, grouse?, mule deer, etc. already in here. Fun stuff.
We just got in from looking at and for bruins. Kept thinking about how ugly the silver scope is, may have to rattle can it one of these days...

My comment wasn't directed to you, just posted after you... all kinds of non-elk photos were posted.
Generally I'm mystified how threads drift from the original post/request.
Guess I'm too literal for internet forums... if a guy requests "as it lay photos" on an elk forum, then posts the same, I assume that's what he want's or he'd have put the thread on the general big game forum.
Silly me.

What gives on the black rag on the elk horn Dober?
Could have covered the scope with it...
I too was wondering about all the non-elk in the elk "as it lay" thread.

Is an elg picture alright, or is that forbudt?

I am guilty, did it just to upset Brad.....grin

I think this is elk enough
Sadly quite a few CO hunters actually shot these for elk. Expensive mistake.
she started at the top...
tobogganed about 700' vertical feet and aired out the last 25'
she was all kinds of messed up inside from the fall and impact... ie guts all the way up in the neck
My 2010 Kentucky cow with a M70 EW in .308 Winchester. 168 gr. TTSX.
Another lost .338 bullet. Exit wound really pumped it out. Didn't need the blood trail to find her.
Several years ago I read an article by Jim Zumbo. He said he'd shot a bull in some really nasty brush. It took him 3 hrs JUST TO TURN IT OVER TO START GUTTING IT. Hells bells, didn't the guy ever hear of no-gut and boning? I'd have started skinning and boning from the top down.
Klik........what rifle have you got leaning against your elg?
I think posting your elg picture is fine. Thanks.
The call em elk in Sweden, close enough. Keep them coming.
Here is my submission:
My first elk. The photo does not do the slope justice. The only reason he quit sliding was that his antler caught on those dead limbs.
That's a great shot, Crowkiller.
But, I really wanted to comment on your avatar--it's gonna give me nightmares!
Just for you........grin!
Oh man that looks like a fun one. "anybody got a crane?"
Some outstanding pictures everyone.
Here's mine from yesterday morning. Got a quick shot off after she jumped from her bed 30 yards ahead of me. Ran a short way after the shot and died right next to an abandoned two track. Lucky day.
I sure hope to be adding a picture to this thread in the next three weeks!
This thread really has me excited. Packing my stuff as I type this and packing the truck tomorrow after work. Leaving at 6AM Wednesday morning on a long drive from PA to CO. I hope to be able to post a pic here soon.
heres my entry, first elk ever, 190 yards,165 barnes tsx, m5 ultralight 300 weatherby
No. This is this weekend.
ETA; last weekend.
Sweet, bro.
Want to hear the tale sometime.
Helped my wifes uncle on his first bull. Besides JR's first bull this was the coolest elk hunt i've been on.
Awesome.
You get a good pack board workout?
Or have pack animals?
Pack. Only .60 miles to the road and down hill.
This little guy sure was tasty
Shot this buck on Wednesday, in W. Montana. He slid about 20 yds down hill and thankfully hung up otherwise he'd have gone another 200-300 yds down a 40 deg slope with fresh and very slippery snow making for a hairy recovery.
Started at the top and worked down
Alan
Nice bull FishN4Eyes. Congrats.
Been on your Oryx hunt yet?

Nice bulls yourself! Looks like you've been busy!
Oryx in Feb. Can't wait!
One of my more difficult retrievals.......sucker was DRT....knife and fork were NO help at all.....
Story please! Doesnt look fun at all
Deertracker:
What can I say....I...uh...had a temporary inability to assess hidden terrain....
Note to self: Just because the weeds are all the same height doesn't mean the ground is too.
That is a great deer hunting locale though.....but we've gone back to dragging them out from "where they lay".....(tired of replacing doors and running boards).
those don't diminish your metal-killing skills any......you've got talent noone can take away.grin
I finally get to add this year's deer to my own post. next week I get to hunt elk.
One of my favorite where it fell elk pics.
OK, so this is a wee bit different....
as I'm driving into our little hamlet tonight, my neighbor calls and says "There's a coyote under my back porch"
Indeed there was...a good sized male...which he elected to shoot between the eyes with a .17 air rifle. I don't know what brand it is...but I'm going to buy one.
Anyway.....this is the beast..."as it lay".
I bet it just ate the cat that used to sleep under there.
This year's archery bull. Many will believe I was beach hunting in Montana but this is the first bull that actually ran towards the truck. Not the greatest arrow placement but had the intended effect as it hit vitals.
Modern hi-power air rifles are nothing to sneeze at.
Colorado two weeks ago. It was snowing when I shot him and it took 1-1/2 hours to get across the canyon to him.

Nice elk! Apparently though his vitals are in the opposite end from elk around where I hunt...

+1. The hunting gods were with him that day.
One of my favorite where it fell elk pics.
Having bowhunted the high country for years, that is probably the most beautiful photo I have ever seen, for so many reasons.

that is a very cool pic
No doubt I had many forces working (long story). The photo shows the arrow as it was working its way out. It actually was buried past the knock and hit several vital organs. He expired nearly immediately.

Hey. You win some/you lose some. You definitely came out winner. Nice elk.
Just for you........grin!
I'll bet that was a chore to get out?
Here is this years effort...
And a calf my friend took on a beaver pond at -35 two years ago, always liked that pose!
This one was from a few years ago, He was very civilized and lay down nicely in the cut hay field that I stalked him in.
Heres a couple.....
And after some pics....
Just set my rifle down and snapped this.
To further mystify Brad.
Sam, that's a great "before" picture. Too bad there ain't no "after" shot.
2012 bull
This spike I shot across a canyon in 2010 had his headgear so tangled up in this Alder thicket it took me a half hour to get him untangled enough to start to turn him over to cut him up.
It's hard to see in the pics, but it was so steep my son was standing less than a full step behind and above the elk when he took the pic. If it wasn't for the alder thicket, he would have rolled all the way to the bottom of the canyon. [img:center]

2nd season Colorado
Only elk I've ever killed......taken on a special draw hunt on the Wichita Mts. National Wildlife Refuge in SW Oklahoma.
Bow killed buck......dogs/coyotes got to it before I did and pulled a bit of hair off the butt.
Some really nice pictures here, great hunts, great memories. Things we might forget without the pics.
I get to add to my own thread: 4th season western Colorado.
Bloodtrail
A nice fat cow, I had the first steaks tonight.
Outstanding thread. Thanks, guys.

Which vitals?
My buddy and I share this pair of locked bucks. It has been an interesting season.
a couple years ago, Hermosa Creek area, San Juan NF
Yes. Over 20 years old now. 7mm Rem Mag.
Here's one
a couple years ago, Hermosa Creek area, San Juan NF
I think I saw that tree before!!!
About ten years ago when the only pocket camera I had was a 35mm:
Here is how I walked up on my Quebec Bear. He got his last meal.

What brought about his demise?
160gr Accubond to the neck from a 7mm Rem Mag Browning BAR at about 175 yards.
338 win mag 200 gr speer
Great pics all. Here is a javi from a few years back:
Bow kill...fanny pack is being used to cover up the gore.
First archery elk, he made a hell of a crash. Lucky he didn't end up under that dead fall.
Not an elk, but it still took about fifteen minutes to get this buck out of this blackberry bush.
Not exactly where it fell, but this cow made a dash across the beaver dam and fell in the water. Only her head and neck was sticking out. I had to take my boots off and wade out into that black mud and put a chain then a lead rope that I had on the mule and let the mule drag her out of the water. This was as far as he could drag her.
This was the small 5x5 I shot this year in 2nd rifle season. The ravine is steeper than it looks.
This was the cow I shot this year in ML season. A lot easier to get at and out.
I sure don't mind when they fall in easy places.
I reckon not, especially with a bull like that.
Nobody won this one
