Well, I got out this morning and finalized my elk load for the 338 Win Mag. I tried RL15 and the 210, accuracy was decent, but speed was pretty slow at around 2800. I also tried the 210 PT with IMR4350. It speed was excellent at around 3100, but accuracy wasn't great. So, the final load is the 200 AB, 76.5 RL19, CCI250, and WW cases running right at 3000 FPS.

I wanted the zero about 1.5" low at 300 yards, so I dialed it down a couple of clicks. Also, I used a 6 O'Clock hold for the next three. Easier to center up at 300. Shot these next 3.

DONE!!! I am calling it ready to hunt. With the screws torqued down to 45 inch pounds and LocTited, the gun shot awesome all morning.

The Model 70 7WSM is cranking out the 160 AB's a touch over 3100, and stacking bullets plenty good for me.

I can't wait to hit the mountains. Really excited. I was a little worried the M70 338 wasn't going to make it, but it seems to have wrung me out. It will be sweet to get a chance at a big muley or elk with the rifle. I have all the confidence in the world the 200 AB will smoke elk and deer as far as I wanna shoot...

Good luck on your hunt. You have good taste in dogs by the way.

Rock n roll buddy!

I'd have no problem taking a poke at an elk with the 200 AB. Especially when you're shooting 2.5" at 300 yards! One of my rifles will be shooting AB's, 165's from a 308 Win.

Great looking rifles

That's a beautiful 338!! They don't make them like that anymore...By the way, my elk rifles are always ready grin

Thanks fellas! The M70 338 was a 10 year anniversary present from my wife. It seems to be a good one.

beretzs...any idea the year of manufacture on the M70?? I am definitely envious. It makes my sako look pedestrian, but remindes me of my P64 standard I have.

Where in NoVa are you & as asked above...where are you elk hunting? I am in NoVa myslef (Tysons) and heading to SW CO today to hunt elk starting Saturday. I'm toting a 338WM shooting hornady Interbonds, and a backup '06...both sakos. Good luck!

Oh sorry, I am headed to Idaho.

I think it is a 1960 manufacture. Yeah, I am down in Fredericksburg as well. Stationed on Quantico.

Good luck in Colorado. Seems like you have the rifles covered pretty well too!

Luckily, I was able to take an old load from my previous M70 338WM and put a load together to hunt with. I really wanted to use the 210 PT's, but I didn't have time to work up a load that shot better than the AB's do. Ah well, I am sure the 200 AB's will do okay.

Accubonds rock! I've recovered 4 of them now from elk - all under the far hide and perfectly mushroomed. I prefer them to partitions now. Good luck on your hunt, and I echo the beautiful rifle comments!

Thank you. Yeah, I am not planning on giving up the PT's anytime soon, but they work very much the same way. Both of them are my go to bullets for bigger than deer game.

I'm always looking for good pre 64's at a decent price. You've got a good wife too, you better hang on to that one!!! Wish mine would give me a rifle for an anniversary gift frown.... grin

Glad someone has it figured out. I'm still debating which rifles to take.

For that matter, I have a final range session tomorrow before we leave Friday for WY antelope. Still debating what to take there, too. One minute I'm leaning toward a virgin Rem M700 .30-06 and a virgin Marlin .30-30, the next I see myself reaching for the 6.5-06AI and the Bob.

We're headed West this morning. I imagine everything should be good with the world in a few days!

Good luck in deciding. It's never easy for nuts like us.

Good luck buddy. Hope you get a dandy and have a safe return...

The 225 Accubond is a good one too. That's what mine is loaded with.

Good luck on your hunt!

Mine are ready too ( 4 rifles ), but nowhere to go. Poor, poor pitiful me. LOL
Are you hunting on your own in Idaho or guided?

And travel safe, and have a super time in the mountains.

We are hunting on our. We have hunted Idaho or Oregon with decent luck in the past.

Thank you. Same to you in your hunts coming up.
Just put the finishing touch on my .270..Never used that caliber on elk, but this one is a shooter with a 26 in. #5 barrel..also will have my .375 H & H, and of course a .300 Win. Just tried one I bought at the same time I picked up the .270..It is a very accurate rifle also..good luck with those elk..
