There's ice on some of the creeks in the vicinity but only patchy snow in the hills. So the photo must have been taken in late winter or early spring.

You should see several hundred elk gathered around an isolated water hole.
You may have copied the coordinates wrong. Highlight the coordinates and copy them onto your clipboard. Bring up Google Earth and paste the coordinates into the search line. Push the search button and you should see the elk. You may have to zoom in some.

I'd say late summer before the aspen start to change. Follow the creek down and there are quite few more(and north east more coming into the spring).

Very cool KC. There is a major migration corridor at the north end of the sand dunes, so that's probably where they are coming from. I scouted and studied that area one year, before deciding to hunt the west side west of Saguache. Neat find!
