Headed out tomorrow am chasing cow elk with my son for the first time.

He's stoked even though he's not old enough to hunt yet. We have outfitted his .17 with a sling so he will have a rifle to pack. He's probably hoping for a porcupine tomorrow as much as an elk.

Hoping to get some cows coming out of the breaks onto a barley field and be done in short order because it is supposed to get pretty warm.

Good luck to all the other Montana hunters tomorrow for the rifle opener.
Fantastic! Keep us posted on how it goes. Best of luck to both of you.
Hope you have good luck.
Ended up taking a nice 6 or so mile hike in beautiful weather. Saw a decent number of deer, a few bucks but no elk. The only other thing we saw were snakes sunning themselves trying to get ready for winter.

Great day, great hike in the morning. My son really wanted to pack a rifle so I let him pack a .17. He was to be the official porcupine shooter. He learned pretty quick that it takes a while to figure out how to sling a rifle comfortably. Good lesson for him.

I have a few pictures, but fighting with photobucket to get any uploaded.
