I hunted there years ago with usual success on cow elk. A small resident herd there. They often go to Fossil Butte, which is prohibitted to hunting. Can be found in gulleys leading to Rock Creek mid season, and then migrate to the West side. Access from Cokeville, HWY 30-89 very late in season. I never got a bull there.
There are landowners who allow some hunting. Best to contact
Fish and Game guy there named Hymann, I think he's still in that area. He could be very helpful.

Lots of BLM, state and Nat Forest land.

Hunted there this last year. LOTS of elk, but they filter onto the Fossil Butte National Monument.

I saw bull after bull after bull during the late cow season. Didn't end up filling either of my cow tags. I did see cows but they all were being chased around by people on 4-wheelers and UTVs.

In Dec 2013, we got into a herd of about 500 and put 3 cows on the ground just as they were crossing into the Fossil Butte National Monument.

Dang ATV's/UTV's. I didn't them years ago, and their presence just hastens elk movement into Fossil Butte. Years ago, there'd be a hunter stalking the top of a pine slope, a hunter stalking the bottom of the pine slope. We walked and stalked and watched the outcropping little meadows. We got elk. Good to learn that the herds seem to have increased, if only to end up on Fossil Butte though.

We had the same experience as Dog_Hunter a few years ago(wife was born/raised in area).Cows when hunting bulls, bulls when we were hunting cows. Possibly the biggest problem with the area is "too" much road(trucks, atv, with)access! memtb

i was thinking of playing around in there archery season. I have a general tag and am hunting farther east but could poke around in 104 on a three day weekend with my bow. i am assuming that in September a guy would want to look more to the north?

Ken my apologies for the thread hijack

Elkliver, You could do a lot worse than the Rock Creek drainage, west of Kemmerer. Fairly easy access, many timbered draws, with most having a few resident elk. Dempsy Basin, north-west of Kemmerer would be another good choice fairly close to town with good access. Good Luck, memtb
