Caught this fella coming across the hay meadow this evening! There was a herd of about
40 come up outta the river and willows headed for the mountain. Only one I could get a clear shot at.

Young son busted one too outta the same bunch. I just don't have a pic of his yet. And to top it off it was his first elk. Quite a hunt!!!

Jorge,

My original intent was to hunt the woods this year. Figgered I cound get an easier shorter shot. This shot was ever bit of 175 yds.

We intended to hunt the edge of the mountain along the long valley. 3 of us Spread out for a out for 3/4 of a mile or better. Oldest son was headed to the north end as he was deer hunting. Glassed a deer there yesterday. I was gonna hang back with young son as immoral support.

We started across the hay meadow and this herd come out of the river bottom behind us and we're runnIng parallel to us kinda confused. We stepped up the pace and made it to the mountain and jumped in the old irrigation ditch up there for cover. Elk kept coming. Two sons started working the way north in the ditch. I following about 50/75 yards behind kinda slow. The elk came withing 150 yards and he got a clear shot at his.

Elk started moving south toward me. So I belly crawled out on the irrigation ditch trail and took a shot at this one as he gave me a clear shot. There was one other nicer bull in the here. But that sly old Dawg wouldn't leave the cow cover. Meat hunting success!!!!

Congratulations on your successful elk hunt. Sometimes I read about the hunts you guys in other states come up with and I just shake my head. That hunt would never occur anywhere I've hunted in Oregon. I lead a sheltered life.

great job both of you

Awesome! Congrats!
Nice job KW!!

That irrigation ditch is handy cover. Might have to dig a few in my AZ Wilderness Area hunting spots!

For those without the good fortune to be at the Quemado camp this summer, ol' KW was the only one slingin' lead from iron sights during the steel shoot. And layin' em in there he was. Same rifle I believe.

Sure is handy as hell!!! I used it to sneak up on my bull last year!
Damn Chinee coolies dug that ditch! The brought it a steam shovel, but the chinee could dig faster!!!! They tried to get the shovel out but got it bogged up here on the ranch.its still down in the bog!!! But sunk a bunch deeper. Dunno if any of it is still sticking out. It's a mess down in that area!!!

That 95 I had at Quemado was one of my SRC's. Mebbe bring it next hunt! wink.

Elk hunting in Oregon is a nightmare. I won't go into all the details but I'll just say that everything is stacked against hunters. The success rate verifies the level of difficulty.
