It happens. Some years ago, about 80 elk drowned when they tried to cross the Mores Creek canyon northeast of Boise. They were ok as long as they were lined out and moving but they stopped and bunched up.
In that same vein, several years ago about 35 elk were found dead on Mt. Evans west of Denver in the middle of the summer. Division of Wildlife inspected and determined they had died of a lightning strike.
God just doing what God does.

They determined it was a certain type of lichen. It was in the Red Desert area of Wyoming. There have since been a couple more incidents with just a few elk affected.

Last winter a bunch of elk died on the Sun Valley, ID golf course from eating yew. It's poisonous to everything, including people. I don't know if it passed, but after that the town was considering outlawing any new planting of yew.

Just happened to a family of black bears in suburban PA that ate English yew bushes. Apparently taxine is very potent.

A former boss of mine had 2 steers almost ready to butcher when they both just dropped dead one morning. Turned out that he had helped his father prune some trees and bushes and he'd piled the brush in the pasture to burn. A couple of the bushes were yews and the steers ate them.
Not elk, but deer in our case. Back behind our camp in central Pa. there's a spot where the deer have been traveling for centuries. It's a trail that drops down over the side of a mountain into a hollow, and the path is so beat down, they've actually created what ammounts to another hollow where they walk that trail.
About 25 years ago we had a terrible ice storm. Everything froze slick and very slippery. The deer would move across that trail and drop down the steep sideslope, slip and fall, break their pelvis and die an agonizing death. There was a pile of deer laying at the base of that slope that died the same way. I don't remember the exact humber, but I think it was in the 30's. The locals call that spot Death Valley and for a good reason. Ma Nature can be very unforgiving.
