Well I love to shoot and have always wondered how hard it is to get into it , I live here in Mo about 120 north of St. Louis , but dont know where they have any matches , but would love to get into it , also like to get my son shooting in compitition so any info would be great
i'd say go to accurateshooter.com, there is a thread that you will have to search for that has all the f-class ranges in the us; for the most part. i am sure ther is one close to you. also you will be able to find benchrest ranges in your area. its alot of fun to shoot in competition.
i shoot f-class and am hooked. i primarily go to beat myself each match. my last 3 matches in 2012 i took 1st place shooting well into the high master class. i can;t wait for the 2013 matches to start!
the nice thing about f-class is everyone seems to be very welcoming. you can go with you hunting rifle and have a good time.
there are also groundhog shoots with factory classes where you can be very competitive with a stock gun.
Thanks for the info , I think it would b fun shoot competive I used to shoot skeet competive but got married and kids came and got tired of the bs so I quite but want to get back into it
Search the NRA's site for clubs with matches.

Here in CT we shoot .22's indoors all winter long with both rifles and pistols.

In warmer weather it's the same outdoors and also shotgun shooting.

What are you wanting to shoot?
Not sure just would like to shoot 600 yds or closer , not sure at anything , not sure I could even use any of the rifles I have , I have a custom 222 rem that I had built , but have lots of varmit calibers , but thinking about a 6.5x284Norma , but looking into things , I just love to shoot and love to challege myself , plus I cost a bad habit I love to reload and always looking for a better load
hey 76 michael , you need to check out the st. louis brenchrest club wright city mo it is a world class range and has nearly any type of competive displain, myself I like silhoutte shooting the best, more of a challange of you and less of the rifle
Yeah I have been there and shot there a few times , I have a buddy who is a member there , I ve tried to talk to a few people to get into competive shooting but all the wanted was me to join , that fine but I got a range behind my house and can shoot as far as I want in our bottom ground , I gots lots to look at I'm gonna keep receaching
If you are healthy, I'd look at position shooting like Highpower. Then when you get gimpy move to F-class or benchrest.
yeah I have a buddy who wants to get into 3 gun competion , which would be fun to but not to sure thats what i want to do , I like shooting off the bench ,
3 gun is not position shooting at all

But now you've given it away, you like to sit at a solid bench and plink away.

That means you look to BR and or F class, though if you love the bench F class may not be for you either.

IMHO if you just like shooting period, I'd simply look into joining a club that provides the most opportunities and shoot it all, but not seriously on any of it.

A local club that we used to belong to had the ability to have BP matches, rimfire silhouette, pistol silhouette, reduced highpower, sporting rifle, bullseye pistol and action pistol. Made for great cross training though once I get involved I get 110 percent into what i"m. Hard for me to be mediocre at everything rather than good at one...
st louis has one of the best ranges in the country. it is truly a great range and a good place to shoot. in addition to this ron hoehn has a shop at the entrance to the range that you can buy goodies for bench rest. [such as rests and actions and barrels and cleaning supplies.] he even builds rifles. make time to go check it out.
