Thanks Kingston.

I wonder which optic is most popular for these events now? I'm thinking the SWFA SS would be about perfect.

The Texas team used March. They did pretty well.

I hate Texans.

The working men are using Vortex 1-4x PSTs.

Barry, I'll leave that alone.

Sheesh.

Barry, I'll guarantee the Texas fellers work for a living, except for the retired people. Keith Stephens won the Presidents 100 and Hugh Reich was third. If I'm not mistaken the Texas Team set a new record.
Now if Keith Stephens was well to do, why did he join the Army after Camp Perry? I believe he is 46yrs old. I learned the Army can recruit great shooters for their team.
Posted By: BarryC Re: Service Rifle Rules? - 12/12/16
There ant's nothin' average about Keith. Most of us can't/won't dedicate those kinds of resources to the sport. Between kids, mortgage payments, jobs that give you 2 weeks of vacation if you are lucky, it takes real dedication to be competitive beyond a club level. It's all I can do to keep in barrels and I scrounge brass where I can get it.
Posted By: avagadro Re: Service Rifle Rules? - 12/12/16
Which barrels do you prefer ?
Posted By: avagadro Re: Service Rifle Rules? - 12/12/16
'Flave, I'm gonna play with a Leupold AR & the SWFA variant.

Gotcha. I wasn't sure if you were referring to Team Army or similar.

I'm going to try and shoot some matches next summer. It looks like there are at least three or four I might be able to get to so I'm going to put some stuff together and give it a go.

Dave,

Come down to our state service rifle championship and show us to do it. I will pay for your entry fee. If interested, let me know I will send you the entry form to fill out.

Dave, you probably know that I'm an Okie, but I think your comment is tongue in cheek.
I will say in this case they mix.

Can't help. When I was shooting CMP matches, then DCM the Garand was predominately being used. We looked at those funny M16's just coming on scene and thought you could never shoot 85 gr bullets out of a sheet metal rifle 600 yards with any accuracy.Boy were we embarased.
Posted By: rost495 Re: Service Rifle Rules? - 01/02/17
Saddle, don't worry, we shot M1A to start with. Carolyn had an AR for a few months... 69s even suck at 600 at one of the worst wind ranges we ever shot on. As far as I know a 200 was never shot there at 600.... Though Nez had a 199 IIRC on an easier morning once...

But the advent of getting around to 80 jlks and such, and better triggers, float tubes and so on made the difference for sure....

Most of us that don't have Nightforce-depth pockets use the Vortex Viper PST 1-4X.

1:8 twist ain't gonna work for Service Rifle comps.. You'll need a 1:7 to spin up the 77 and 80 grainers that we use.

I use a WOA Wilson barrel and switch it out about every 2,500 rounds, whether it needs it or not.

You're wrong. Bamban gunsmithed the winner's upper for Camp Perry and used the Shilen 4 groove ratchet 8 twist. They also used the superior March scope, not a Nightforce or Vortex.

Check out Keith Stephens and also how the Texas State rifle team ended up.

Okay. First I've heard of an 8-twist being used in a while, ever since most folks switched from 69 SMK's to 77's. But, oh well.
March scopes...uhhuh...better dig even deeper in your pockets for that.
Posted By: butchlambert1 Re: Service Rifle Rules? - 01/04/17
Maybe Bamban will post the bullet size and brand. He uses Bat barrel extension and his spec ed reamer. His attention to machining and detail is just wonderful.
I believe the Texas team set a record that was quite a bit better than to old record.
Unfortunately Keith joined the Army and will be shooting with them this year.
Posted By: Bamban Re: Service Rifle Rules? - 01/07/17
We shot 75 VLDs, 80 SMKs, 80 VLDS, 80.5 Bergers, and 82 Bergers through the 4G 8T Shilens.

At the last LEG MATCH at Bayou Rifles in Houston, Keith shot the 82s, had 200-11X at 6, Buddy shot the 75 VLDs and ripped it 200-11X, with the 10s forming a nice group around the X ring. Lee dropped a point on his first shot, posted 199-15X.

Back in the day when Jeff and I shot together, I used the 7.8 T Obermeyer(might as well be 8T) My old friend Bill Wylde, the creator of the Wylde reamer, did the barrels for me back then. Using 80 VLDs, the little 20 inch rifle won the High Service Rifle at the 1998 Long Range Championship, shooting against M14s and M1s.

You don't need a 7T to shoot clear to 1000.
Posted By: deflave Re: Service Rifle Rules? - 01/23/17
Are there any standard, go-to type loadings or factory ammo that seem to consistently shoot well?

I'm actually running low on my stash of 75gr. BTHP's and was wondering if there is anything I should test during the rest of this winter?

Travis
Posted By: Triggernosis Re: Service Rifle Rules? - 01/23/17
Travis, go to White Oak Precision's website and look under "technical articles" I believe for good load info.. Basically, 24.0 gr. of Varget, TAC, or Reloder 15 under a 75 gr or 77 gr bullet is all that's necessary. Don't waste time ammo testing for Service Rifle - the lab rats have already done the development
Posted By: deflave Re: Service Rifle Rules? - 01/23/17
That's what I was thinking and I'm glad to read that.

I'm gonna get the SWFA HD but for right now I'm just shooting with irons.

I haven't put a sling on in a long time.

The Creedmoor loadings with the 75gr. HPBT seem like a pretty decent deal.

Anybody ever run any of that stuff?

Loaded longer than mag length with those bullets, so all single loaded??

Thanks.

Yes, at 600 you are REQUIRED to single load, so you may as well take advantage of the heavier, longer bullets and push them way out there. I seat my 80gr SMK loads at 15 thou. off the lands.
Posted By: MontanaMan Re: Service Rifle Rules? - 01/24/17
Yeah, thought so, but didn't know it was a requirement, besides I'm pretty sure all of those bullets would have some of the ogive pushed into the neck if loaded to mag length.

Somehow I ended up with an SWFA Tactical 1-4 that is now extra. Never mounted. If I can figure out where I stashed it, I'll be listing it...probably $350.
