I have been given an AR in 7.62x39. The rifle does not have any mags. I have many .223 mags for an AR. Will these mags work for the 7.62x39?? The ammo seems to fit the mag. Will the rifle function? I don't want to destroy the rifle before I get a chance to use it.
Thanks for any help.
Probably not with any reliability. You're not going to "destroy the rifle" but you may have a single shot with cartridge storage device. You can try it, but don't expect great results.
The magazine follower and the magazine shoulder/lips should be different to match the bigger case and the case taper.
What is it? If it's the Colt Light Sporter from the early '90s, pm me. Got at least one NIP.
It is a rifle from parts. A friend built it, then decided he liked fishing better. I came out of the top end of that deal, if I can get this to shoot.
They make a 30 cal. that functions with standard AR mags. It's called a 300 blackout.
The 7.62x39 is a tapered case, and you are putting it in a straight mag. I seriously doubt your standard mags with work with standard mags.
Good Luck with it.....never heard great things out of 7.62x39mm ARs as the magazines have never really been 100% reliable...probably due to the mag well being too deep. I believe this is why Rock River makes an AR that takes AK mags to have a uber reliable AR in 7.62 x 39mm
I had seen AH64 sent a link he is always a good source of info
One more good site for those Mags is 44mag.com
The 7.62x39 ASC mags come well recommended (by Hardened uppers) and their freight is reasonable
Its just a great cartrige

Nephew has the x39 upper... I have no clue what mags he has, but he likes to shoot. Will empty a gun more often than not on pigs/yotes etc....
I"ve never seen or heard of a jam with his gun. And I've shot one yote with it just the other side of 500 steps. And a lot of stuff much closer.
For supersonic loads you are ahead of the game vs a whisper.

I'm a source..."good" can be debated...
Yeah, right, we know how good a source you are!!! And thanks for participating and putting in your 2 cents worth of things you've actually BTDT on.
Vs otehrs that "read about it somewhere"
