My bil gave me an M1 carbine last fall. Took it out to shoot it; shoots to poa well, fun gun to shoot, and functions fine, except.....is it suppose to leave the action open after last round fired from the magazine? because this one does not. Magazine is aftermarket 15 rounder.

Nope.

The follower can be altered to catch the bolt after the last round is fired.

Neither of mine do.

I love M1 carbines
Sold mine to focus on ARs for practical reasons
But the M1 carbine is a joy to carry

the closest I have to a M1 carbine at the moment is a 1907 351 self loader. for all practical purposes it feels and is as fun to shoot as the m1. heavier by far but still like a m1 has enough plain old fun factor to make even a old guy giggle. just got into AR's but another M1 carbine is in the future

The M1 Carbine does not lock open on its own. It depends on the follower in the magazine.

Standard GI 15-round mags/followers do not lock open the bolt.

Standard GI 30-round magazines/followers do hold the bolt back. However, the bolt closes when the magazine is dropped.
