Just got this PSA Freedom 16 on Saturday and was wanting to sight it in and was wondering what the best way is to break in a new barrel AND I mounted the rear peep at the rear most slot, is there a sweet spot that works best or is it all up to the individual shooter? Its just an entry level UTG flip up peep.

No break in required. I would start off by pulling a bore snake through the barrel or run a patch through it just to clean out any gunk that may be in there. After that, just shoot and clean when it needs it.

Good advice there. The only thing I would add is to run the action really wet with lube for the first couple hundred rounds to let everything settle in and flush out any crud/manufacturing gack in it.

Then, shoot it like you stole it.

Beign you don't have a top end barrel I too would shoot it.

Top end barrels I still break in to this day. The one tiem I didn't I still had accuracy but it fouled the most of any top line barrel I'd ever owned....

RE teh rear sight, as far back as in where the normal sight would sit would be a pretty dang good spot for it.

go shoot it, if its chrome lined your not going to touch the lifespan in it for many many rounds.

When out and shot it yesterday and today and quickly found out that I just dont have the eyes for iron sights anymore, expecially at a hundred yards or more. Time to put some glass on it.

The issue with irons is multi.. you have to see the front sight perfectly.. the target can be a bit blurred. The rear aperture size is very important to making all this work. And the target while blurry has to have some contrasting reference point..

Our eyes can't handle all this as we age as easily, but the fact I got out shot as a 40 year old by 70 plus year olds with irons... says it can be done...

Absolutely. But I haven't shot iron since I was a wee lad of 15 years and I'm 54 now. I just such a different process and at 100 yards the pin pretty much seemed to blot out the target.

Half and Half Rifle Drills are a good start.

I can put holes in paper at 100 for sure with irons, but forget about precision. For $500 get an SWFA 1-4 classic and an Aeroprecision SPR scope mount, use the top tip of the diamond as a aimpoint at 100.

I can hit a 10 inch plate at a hundred but not much better, at least so far.

I'm looking at doing similar to the carbine I'm building now. SWFA 1-? (likely classic 1-4) with maybe a reflex site for close work, and offset irons on standby. May just skip the reflex, at least to start with.

My front sight covered 36 inches at 600 yards.... I shot almost always clean or close to clean as I got to the top of the game. Meaning 20 rounds in the 10 or x ring. 10 ring 6 inches wide. x ring 3 inches wide. ALmost always 50% or more Xs.

The iron sight game has requirements, a major one of htose is being able to over come mental blocks.
