What say ye? Worth the trouble or not?

It looks like an interesting round. With modern powders it seems like one can get darned close to 250 Savage ballistics with lighter bullets.

My friend and I discussed this quite a bit and he decided to purchase an upper from Sharps.

The only problem is Sharps refused to sell an upper or any parts to anyone in NY state. They went on to say they wouldn't even ship to an FFL in NY state.

So my buddy said "F" 'em and bought a 6.8 upper from Stag and is very happy with it.

I can't recommend anyone to do business with a company that won't legally sell their products to shooters living in states that are not firearm friendly. We are already punished by the crack pot laws, we don't need to be punished further by firearm companies.

NYC elects the governor not the hunters and shooters from upstate NY.

Get a different caliber.

i have built 2 of them and they are great. one is 16 inches and one is 20. traded the 20 off to a member for a 22 mag upper and still use the 16 inch.
i have never been able to get the magic 3k fps out of either one, but then neither have i gotten it out of my 99 savage 250-3000.
i load conservitively though so some one with more balls might get it.
accuracy is as good as i get with .223 and with the extra weight it makes a good whitetail round.
forming cases is a snap and if you get a set of dies from sharps it comes with an expansion die.
as for Sharps not selling to NY thats their business. i feel for you guy's behind enemy lines but will not boycott a company because they choose not to go through the hoops your state imposes.

I'm considering a Remington 700 build with a 22" barrel maybe.

what bullet weight are you looking to use?

87-100 but probably use the 85gr Sierra Varminter or 90gr Sierra Game King most.

( I missed the Rem 700 post)-edit

I think you get into the bullet length/mag constraint/bullet construction/velocity cycle

although the new hornady 25-35 bullet might be short enough .

if you just want it because it's different, go for it.

there are so many good .224 bullets, it's probably hard to improve on the original.

But it can be fun to try!

Sharp is making their own loaded 100 gr flat point or roundnose, to fit the magazine, I think, but only available in loaded ammo.

except for the 86 gr 25-20 bullets, most .257 bullets are meant for higher velocities than you'll get from a 25 Sharps.

Something to think about.

Maybe a 25 on the 6.8 case?

I know this in an older thread, but I recently saw a 25-45 sharps in the classifieds. Seemed like a good deal.

Other than the mystique of some off the wall cartridge, the 6.8SPC or 6.5 Grendel would be a lot more practical. Plus they are a bit off the wall as well.
