Just sold a rifle so I need to go ahead and replace it. Thinking seriously about getting a Ruger #1 in 45-70. If you have one or have had one let me know what you think of it, Things like accuracy, recoil, range for deer and so on. Thanks alot

Get one! Have it and it's definately one of my favorites. easy to shoot and carry, darn accurate with just open sights and not too bad o the shoulder at all.

They are beautiful rifles, and recoil won't be an issue if you keep to deer-efficient 300gr factory loads, or their handloaded equivilant.

If you need a scope, they are best scoped with a longer eye relief, straight-tubed 2x, 3x, or low-powered variable.

OTOH, they are also easily peeped, using the clip-on New England Custom Gun peep sight, which attaches to the Ruger scope mount grooves.
NECG also carries different height front sights, should one be wanted/needed, and several bead options (like gold/ivory/fiber optics) for those wanting same.

Here's mine with low rings and a Leupold. I like to use it in the thick stuff. It don't get much better.

I have to get one of those someday. They are the most beautiful gun ever I think and can handle some pretty stiff loads too.

I sure like mine. I even use it for shooting moles in my yard. Even if you miss, the shock takes care of them.

My father and I have numerous 45/70 caliber guns and he has the Ruger #1. It is a wonderful rifle and it will shoot nice groups under 1.5" at 100 yards with several loads. Check out the new Barnes manual for some mega loads. He has been working on several loads using the data in the Barnes manual out to 300 yards. Recoil is stiff with top loads, but as others have stated normal 300JHP loads at moderate velocity is a pussycat in this rifle. The Ruger #1 is the best at standing up to maximum loads to the lightest of loads for the old venerable 45/70. Good Luck.

A little known detail! grin grin

Actually came in kind of handy in that wide open barren tundra. I knew my 5-year-old wasn't going to raise that head.
