Any body have a number one in 357 maximum? Seems like an excellent possibility in this rifle, and it would certainly make a unique firearm.
I have an old Win Low Wall that started life (I think) as a 25-20 with a #1 oct barrel. Somewhere along its way, someone installed double set triggers, rebored it and chambered it for 357 Mag. I've been thinking for quite some time now about the possiblities of rechambering it for the 357 Maximum. That might make it an excellent East Tx deer stand gun.
Got a 1A 357 Max barrel and a common 1B rifle for a donor.
Just haven't got a round tuit.

Sounds like a fine fall project. Once we both have ours done, come on out and we will take them up to Nevada and blast away.
Pretty good article here. Used to have it in a Contender.

Aaarrrrgggghhhhh! That article gets my blood pumping.
I have a MGM 357 MAX 14" on a TC contender. Like it a lot. Shot an antelope at 90 yards last fall. Double lung, 20 yard run and dead.
Would think it a pretty good <200 yard white tail rifle in a #1.
Nope. Got a Handi-Rifle in 357 max.
I used to have an H&R in 357 max. Fun caliber. I think I still have some ammo and brass for it somewhere.
Fun cartridge. I've only messed with it in Contenders, once in a super 14", once in a 20" carbine.
In the mid-late '80s I had friends rebarrel Martinis for it and for some maxi-based wildcats in .17, .22, and .25.
If I were setting out to build a .357 maxi rifle I'd look real hard at a Ruger #3. The #1 and the Winchester high wall both turn out pretty heavy. I'm not sure if a low wall will handle it or not.

Here you go:
Now that you have a round tuit, do it!
That looks like what I need! I'll download it and see if it fits.
Thanks,

I've got one as a carbine in a TC Encore, works great as a pistol round on deer!
Considering the cash outlay issue, maybe the best option of all is to call Fred at Bullberry and have him make a barrel for the Contender. Then, order some ammo from Reed, and I am in business.
Morning all, I rebarreled a small Martini in 22 Improved using a 40degree shoulder with the 357 MAX. case as the base cartridge and it is a beaut. Runs a 3x9 Leupold and its great fun to sit on the edge of a big paddock in the late afternoon busting a few bunnies. I can highly recommend it

Bravo, pictures? One thing this thread has shown me is the variety of options in chambering this round, and the ingenuity of Fire members in making something cool and unique. A Martini! Of course that would be a perfect rifle for a wildcat based Maximum.
picturerock, do you reload?
Ok sorry to ask a silly question but can you shoot 357 mag out of 357 max? I was at a gun shop and the had a handi in max I wanted one in mag and later said to myself you dumd a--!

Yes, but don't know what will happen to accuracy with the long unguided bullet jump.
Bruce
Selmer, very fitfully. I do a little when I have the time. If (when) I get a Max I will get the dies and reload for it.
Bruce very good point usually when you shoot 38 out of 357 its a two to four inch barrel your not shooting the distance
38 Sp in 357 Mag chamber = about 1/10 inch jump.
357 Mag in 357 Max chamber = about 3/10 inch jump.

works fine.
I have a pair of carbines...one is a 18" lightweight with ghost ring sights, my "walking around" gun & the other a 24" barrel topped with a 2x7 nikon.
when i sight my carbines to shoot an inch high at 50yards with the usual hunting loads (20gr 4227 with Rem 180JHP) they will also shoot the cheapy .38spl 130gr fMJ factory loads to hit point on at around 25yards.
i killed a pair of deer in 1 morning with the max a few years back, those remmy 180jhp's really do a good job at .357max speeds. a few months before that a buddy of mine launched one of those through a feral hog's head that made the mistake of looking straight at us at a distance of 50feet, went clean through the skull and down the neck, lodged in the top of the shoulder. picture-perfect mushroom.
my shorty carbine weighs just a tad under 5#, very handy. stuck a fiber-op front on there with the ghost ring rear.
pig vs long barreled ruger .357max:
Get the max and reload for it. It is hell on wheels in the right application, especially out of a closed breech design like the Contender, H&R, Rossi, or Encore. Let me know if/when you do, I can get you connected with some excellent cast boolits for it that are heavy enough to take advantage of the case capacity. 215 gr. at 1900 fps is certainly doable, and that's a thumper!
Accuracy is fine out of my Encore barrel at 50 yds with .357 Mag and .38 spec loads for plinking. Quart oil bottles every time with the shorter versions in the chamber. 8" gong at 200 yds with the .357 Max loads and 215 gr. or 190 gr. cast boolits and the appropriate charge of 4227 or RL7.
Morning picturerock, Haven't worked out how to post pictures on this forum yet but if you send me an email address I'll send you the article I wrote about it for the "Sporting Shooters - Victoria" magazine. Sorry for the slow reply, work has piled up on me.

P.S I did the same thing on a big Martini in 6mm/303 Improved & I'm currently working on the 7mm/303 Improved version.
Picturerock,
Sent the email last night
Hope you got it OK
