I am thinking of getting NECG sights for my Ruger No. 1S and I see that there are three options as to the front sight. One is white bead, one is a sourdough, and two (of different height) are red fiber optic. Anyone have any of these on your No. 1?

If so, which did you get and did you find the height of the sight to be correct? Thanks for any info.

I got the white one as there is green jungle here for most of our season and then browns prevail. I had mine on a 77 Ruger in .35 Whelen though. none of my few #1s with irons have needed a higher front sight. Does yours, or are you just changing for the color options?

Good question. No, I don't need a higher sight. I just assumed the NECG front sight was superior to the stock sight and as long as I was installing the rear peep I would add the front. I did not understand myself why the red optic had two sizes when the other two only had one.

I ended up filinig down the bottom of my rear NECG sight to get it to hit where I wanted .
it was way too high, I was at the range, I keep tools in my range box, so didn't think anything of it!
It is zeroed at 200 now....

I put one of the NECG peeps on my Ruger 77 MK II in 260. On this rifle I had the gunsmith custom build a flat topped blade front sight and blackened it. The sight picture resembles that of a Garand. Though I only wish my rear sight were as easily adjustable and as repeatable as those of the better American battle rifles.

With the sights set up in this manner I consider this my close range saddle carbine. It is sighted 2 in high at 100 yd and I feel it and I are good for a shot out to two hundred yds on deer.

I much prefer the flat topped post to any bead on an open sight setup. The post allows for a 6 o'clock hold, and does not cover the target. I feel that this allows for more accurate shot placement, when compared to many beads that subtend 8 to 12 inches at the range where I want to shoot game.

Glad you mentioned that Idaho, I too like the fron sights on my M1 and M1A. I guess that would steer me towards the Sourdouch front blade if I go with NECG.

Catnthehat, I'm not sure from your reply, did you keep the original No. 1 front sight when you installed the NECG peep?

I put a NECG sight on my 1A 7x57. I use the stock front bead so far. I intend to order the blade front sight, as the bead is a bid coarse for my tastes. I too prefer the Garand type sight picture after shooting my friends ww2 vintage Garand. I watche shoot a mulie buck at 300 measured yards with it from prone position...he was a army sf sniper, but i still was amazed he made the hit with one shot.

With my front stock bead, the rear sight works fine. No need to file or get a different height.

Were you able to get a NECG front sight with the same height as the standard Ruger one? Or did you just replace the blade in the Ruger ramp?

I have not ordered the blade yet. I think that the blade is a replacement for the bead directly, mounts into the stock ruger front site setup. Check out the NECG website for details.

That issue has been on my mind as well. I have been meaning to dismount and remount the NECG sight on my 77 260rem a couple of times and check the zero. But with overtime at work and 105 degree temps around here lately, I haven't gotten to this project yet.

I am also interested in hearing of anyone who has tried this.

i tried removing & replacing the sight on my #1 international.
for hunting acccuracy (100 yards) it held it's zero ok.
i find the sight adjustment too rough for any sort of fine work. i'm replacing mine with a williams foolproof. i'm also hoping the extra length of sight radius will make that front bead a little more visible. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I have used the complete NECG sight before. The bead is a very precision fit on the Ruger, so you can swap types of beads of the same height and keep your point of aim.

I want to replace the rear folding sight with something fixed. Any sources? That folder is [bleep]. Sure to get knocked flat when you need it.

I could not agree with you more, but on utility grounds rather than the fold-down feature. I would love to find a different rear sight for Rugers.

The factory rear sights just blur out while the irons on my big bores -- the traditional 'safari' type with three blades -- are bold slabs of black with a wider notch that my old eyes accomodate to nicely. Noone makes them for the quarter rib Ruger system. Even my #1 .375 H&H has that puny, unuseable, Ruger-issue rear sight. They must have train loads of them in inventory....

I'm afraid we are looking for a custom job at big $$. Maybe NECGW has a fix for us.

Williams makes a nice, solid adjustable rear sight with a low V that fits the Rugers. You can find them cheap as take offs from some of the nicer factory rifles of the 1960s and 1970s.

Wouldn't the Ruger #1 quarter rib work on the M-77 barrel?

Yes, a nice express-style rear would be nice. I'd even take one that was fixed and tweak it to my load, finally re-bluing it when I got it just right.

I wonder if the dovetail in the Ruger quarter rib could be opened up to accept a NECG two or thee blade sights that they offer. A guy could get the 2 blade unfinished and file it to the proper height if the dovetail could be opened up to the proper size.
