I have recently purchased/received my 300 Sav barrel from Mike Bellm for my G2. Looking at factory ammo, nothing looks terribly exciting, except maybe Hornady's Superformance. Thinking of handloading 130 TTSX or 125 Accubonds. Probably sticking to deer and antelope. Anyone have any thoughts?

I reload .300 Savage cartridges for my Savage Model 99. While they are close to my loading book's "maximum load", they'd be a fairly mild load in a Ruger #1 because the loads for the Model 99 are SAAMI limited to 45,000 C.U.P. due to the Model 99 being a lever-action rifle, but with a rotary magazine. Even though the Model 99's action a strong, it's still a lever action and not nearly as strong as a bolt action or the #1's action.

My hunting load for the Model 99 is:

Winchester case
Winchester standard large rifle primer
150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip/Boat-Tailed Bullet
40.8 grains of H4895 (Max. "book load" for Model 99 is 40.9 grains of H4895)

This load chronographs at 2635 fps (�3 fps ='s +1 fps/-2 fps) and yields minute-of-angle (�1-inch at 100 yards) accuracy.

I like the 150 grain bullets in the .300 Savage since they'll do a good job on deer-sized game. However, the 125 Accubond you mentioned will do excellent job, too... and shoot a bit "flatter" than the 150 grain bullet as well which may come in handy for antelope a longer ranges.

I like the H4895 because it is one of Hodgdon's "EXTREME" powders meaning it is NOT effected by air temperatures the way so many powders which lose muzzle velocity as the temperature drops.

Hodgdon's claim concerning their EXTREME powder is true... I've tested my deer hunting load at 85� and 25�... and my rifle's chronographed muzzle velocity remained the same (2635 fps).

I agree with Ron. H4895 is an outstanding powder in the .300 Savage with bullets mentioned and for any 150 grain offering for that matter. I really like the 150 grain Hornady flat base in my 300's. They also like the Speer 150 grain flat base as well.

I load 41.5 of 4064 with the remington 150 gr core-lokt, shoots a beautiful perfect 3 shot clover leaf.

I am going to try the remington 150 gr round nose core-lokt this spring just because I have a few left over from my 30-30.

Sounds good to me. Remington used to load the RN 150 in .300 Sav, and it worked fine in my rifle.
