I have a Ruger #1B in 338 Win Mag. I am going to start loading for it. I am wanting to use one bullet for everything from Deer to Elk. I have a bullet I am thinking of using and would like our suggestions to compare to my thoughts.

Nosler Partitions are never a mistake.

210 Partition, 200 gr Accubond or 210 Scirocco would be the ones I would be looking at.

I settled on the 210 NPT as my do everything (except 250 NPT for two brown bears) in my 338-06 and have absolutely no regrets. I would probably look at that or perhaps a 225 grainer.

The 210 Partition ... period.

Then, just go and kill stuff.

That'll work, but I eventually switched to the 200 Ballistic Silvertip as my all-around .338 bullet.

When I started using the .338 Winchester Magnum, just after the end of the Paleolithic Era, I believed all the stuff about how 250-grain bullets were ideal--and the entire rationale for the .338. The 250 Partition does kill stuff, but the penetration is wasted on 99% of the world's big game, and 250-grain ammo kicks too much for my aging right shoulder anymore. When the 200 Ballistic Tip came out I tested some next to some 210's, and found the 200 penetrated about 90% as deeply, while shooting noticeably flatter and grouping tighter. Then I shot some animals, and found the 200 usually killed quicker as well. Took a while to recover one from game, and the animal was a gemsbok shot lengthwise. Shot the bull in the right shoulder and the bullet was found under the hide on the left side of the rump.

No doubt if somebody wants to shoot animals way past 500 yards with a .338 the 250's or 300's would be the deal, but out to around 500 the 200 BT will easily handle anything from pronghorns to elk.

210 Partitions were my choice, followed by the Accubond..
I haven't tried the BTBT Mule Deer mentioned.. I have quite a supply of my chosen bullets, but if I were resupplying, the 200 BTBT is one I would certainly be consider.. BT have killed a lot of game for me in calibers from .22 through .30..

My first magazine article was on the .338-'06. My buddy Dave and I both had one and we were just killing the crap out of deer, bears and lots of elk with our rifles.

WE found that the 200s and 210s worked GREAT and the 250s, not so much.

Dave's favorite was the 210 Partition and I got my finest killing out of th Winchester 200-grain Power Point (hell of a bullet). We also used the 200-grain Speer Spitzer and I killed a couple of dandy six-point bulls with them.

Chub shot his .338-'06 with 210 Partitions in Africa a couple of times and found that it would shoot clear through Burchell's zebra from most any angle ... that's pretty amazing.

Given my druthers, I'd use the 200-grain Power Point in my .338-'06. Happily, I still have about 1,000 left because they've been discontinued and are rarer than honest politicians today.

Thank you all for the input. I was thinking of the 210 gr Barnes with the 185gr a close second. You have all confirmed that my thoughts on the 200 - 210 grain bullets is on track.

In .338, the first thing I try is 225 grain Accubonds, somewhere between 73 and 74 grains of RL 19, WW brass, and Fed 215 primers.

I've bombed the living crap out of deer with the 180 grain accubond as well. It hits 'em REAL hard.
