But in a rare moment of rational thought I realized that since I had never shot it in this configuration I didn't need a Leupold M8 3X for my .243 No. 1 RSI -- and I sold the M8.

I am happy to report that I have returned to my senses and was able to find a replacement:

As you can see from the picture, I had the scope pulled all the way back so it would be close enough to my eye to get a full sight picture

I think it's because the rear ring with the Ruger No. 1 is so far forward.

In this picture from the internet, the rear ring of the Winchester Model 70 is much further back, just forward of the trigger guard, giving lots of room to position the Leupold 3X
