Been doing some scope shuffling and wanted to try a light, fixed 4x on my 1A. Picked up a M8 off Ebay. Got it mounted and set as far back as the low rings will allow. Don't want to go offset since that would mean taller rings. As it is now I am perfectly centered in this scope when I shoulder it. I figure I'll use it through the season and see how it works.

I hate public ranges so decided to just go for a hike on the local management area. This is part of our river delta so the terrain varies quite a bit from hardwood thickets and conifer plains to swamps and impenetrable palmetto tangles. I grabbed some ammo, a small piece of cardboard and off I went.

The first half mile or so is a thick tangled mess but it opens up to a sandy plain with sparse pines after that. Another mile or so in and you get back to the flooded swamps and such.

A few shots to get it on paper at 25 yards and then I backed off to 50-65 yards to check zero again. No bench, shots were taken in the sitting position, kneeling position, or standing and braced against a tree...just like I would be shooting if I were hunting. And the best part...no one around to deal with. It was hot, and the ticks were bad, but it was a great way to spend an afternoon.

No idea what true accuracy potential is but it is hitting minute of pine cone at our typical woods ranges. To quote a famous 'Fire persona, "I'll take a thing hitter over a group maker any day." This one should make a fine "thing hitter."

Ruger 1A, 6.5x55 loaded with 140gr Partitions.

What are guys getting ready to hunt with this Fall?

That is one sharp looking rifle; nice wood. Really like the way those old 4X Leupolds sit in low rings.
I am hoping to use a 280 AI that was made from a 7x57. Still have to get it scoped and shoot it. Per MD, (since he wrote it up in a RIFLE magazine article)it is supposed to shoot! Planning a trip to Mexico with Judge Clayton in December.
And then, there is whatever I can find around the ranch.

great wood on that 6.5x55!

I discovered my #1 .218 Bee actually has a 1 in 14" twist. Which is interesting for heavier bullets. I thought it was a 1 in 16"

I've got one of those 1A 6.5x55 in blue, wood not nearly so nice.

Mine is also very accurate, I must admit, I don't get it out as much as I should. No reason, I seem to grab the 1A 257 Roberts instead.

Very nice rifles, especially for the conditions we have here in the South.

Well done, enjoy!
