Any love here for the 45/70 in a Ruger no.1?

Anyone hunt with one?

Does anyone hunt with a long barreled Lyman or 1SC??

No, but I seriously want one. RMEF had an issue of octagon barreled ones as their banquet rifle one year. My pockets were not deep enough to score that one. Makes me think I should go over and make the guy an offer.

There's a few Lyman's on gunbroker and one 1SC

Had one briefly, after years of lust, but it was just a bit more fun on the back end than I want to have these days. I've since replaced it with a .44 mag Low Wall and like it much better for my use, which is mostly offhand "target" shooting, and maybe some casual woods loafing. If I ever get another lightweight Number One, the cartridge will be a bit lighter as well.

The Ruger no1 Lyman is not a light weight rifle!

The lighter #1-Ss in 9.3 and 45-70 chamberings are lively rifles both to carry and to fire. While there are probably better weapons for a long day of spot-and-stalk prairie dogging, they are very appropriate hunting rifles.

I have to admit that I reach my limit of shooting with them pretty fast if I am wearing shortsleeves while shooting from the bench. This is especially true of the 45-70 with full benefit loads of 400-500 grains.

But my 45-70 was my first #1, and it shows the 'love'. wink

And it has made an adequate 'popgun' when moose and bears have wandered across the sights.

I bought mine back in 1993 and topped it off with a Leupold 2.5 compact fixed power scope. It is my favorite big game rifle.
I load up mostly 400gr bullets but the 300 grain slugs are easier on my shoulder.
There is just something about that rifle and caliber combination that has always appealed to me.
If you are considering buying one you won't regret it.

Love the 458 win mag and the 45/70

I'm yet to pop anything with my 45's. Is it true one can eat to the bullet hole? I'm amazed how one can do a brisket shot with a 257 Weatherby and destroy half of both loins.

I have been using a .45-70 No. 3 with a No. 1 buttstock as my tree stand rifle. Shots are never over 100 yards, most are less than 50. It shoots mild reloads using 405 gr. bullet at 1400 fps.

Yes. That's about the velocity and slug I'm thinking about. Pack a Guide Gun around in dark timber sometimes looking for elk, but yet to plug one. The whizzum mags can really reach out but sure destroy a lot of protein.

Funny you should bring this subject up....

Next week, I leave for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for a Black bear hunt.....I'll be carrying my Ruger #1SC in .45-70 along with a S&W 25 in .45 Colt. Going with Old school calibers on this last bear hunt ...........

the .45 Colt......

I'm stuffing the action with 405 gr. Remington SP's over a healthy charge of Reloader7. The .45 Colt is slinging 250 Hornady XTP HP's over a fair charge of 2400.....either should do the job nicely at bait stand range!

S&W Model 25-7? I have one as well. Really well balanced revo.

My #1 .45-70 is an early black pad rifle. It does well with the Barnes 300gr TTSX, over stiff charges of H4198. That bullet is designed for the .458 SOCOM and should do well at warm loaded .45-70 speeds.

Good eye Tex......yes, a very well balanced revolver and accurate as can be!

Nice guns. The .45 Colt and 45-70 are a great combination. I like to pack my New Model Vaquaro in .45 Colt along with my No.1.

Have a 1s, used a Trapdoor load with a hornady 350 gr, roundnose and watched a deer bounce twice after a behind the shoulder hit.
Only time in 50 plus years that I've seen the blood spot from an entrance wound.

Never had a 45/70 but built myself a 45 x 2 7/8 about 35 years ago. 28" barrel of about a 5.5 contour. Could push 500's at 2400 if I wanted but I liked 350's at about the same velocity a lot better. I traded that rifle some time later and recent attempts to get it back ahve been fruitless. GD

I have a nice looking Ruger #1S in 45-70.

Check gunbroker. They have a few cheap Lyman's

I love mine. Buffalo Rifle that points like a quail gun. What's not to love?
I found gun show deal on a Leupy M8 2.5 and stuck it on it. Far and away the darkest scope I own, but it works and looks fine.
Found out this past fall that 405 Remington JSP's at 1750fps. will kill a whitetail at 60 yards. But most here prolly knew that already wink. That's all it's taken as of yet.
So far, mine has liked 3031 with 405 Remington JSP's, Hornady flex tips (325's, I think), and 355 Cast Bullets out of a Ranch Dog mold.
Lee 405HB's and Unique are a HOOT!
IF I ever find the perfect mold (insert my opinion here), it'll get permanently weaned off on cast.
The Ruger has a super short (non-existant) throat, so getting some cast designs to work can be a bit of a challenge, but it also makes it wonderfully accurate, and, according to my chrony, a shade faster than what you would expect with a given load.

Buy one, you'll like it, and they ain't gettin' any cheaper!

Right now, I have two loads for the Ruger....I'm running the Remington 405 softpoint over RL7 or the Beartooth bullets 405 gaschecked hardcast over RL7.

I put a Leupold 2x7 to help with my old eyes! LOL

Going with the softpoints for Black bear this week in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.....

Love my no1 in 45-70. Having great results with H4198 & hornady 350gr interlock.

Here's a couple pics from a trailcam showing two of the bears visiting the bait site....hopefully on Saturday my Ruger #1 will get a chance to speak to one of them!

Good Luck on the Hunt! I killed a 400lb plus bear with a 45-70, and alot of other stuff! they work!

I anyone is interested, Cabelas Fort Mill has a No 1 in 45-70. Thought about going and looking at it, but I don't want a shoulder buster. Looked like it had pretty nice wood in the photos. Price is less than $1,000.
Fotis and Tex, you suck.

Frog, that bottom bear looks chunky! Any chance you will use the S&W?
