Just curious how you guys are cleaning your Ruger No.1's? I'm having a hard time finding a bore guide that will fit a Ruger No. 1 30-06. Was considering trying to bore snake that was long enough. Not a big fan of cleaning from the muzzle end with just a cleaning rod.

I have read too many horror stories about the bore snakes. Don't mess with them any more.

Haven't messed with a bore guide with my #1's either. Just put it in a cradle, padded vise, or whatever works for you...drop the lever and swab / brush / patch from the breech end. When done, twirl a large mop (I use a 20ga bore mop frequently) in the chamber with some light oil to take care any solvent residue and you should be good to go.

I have seen at least one member here drill out a fired piece of brass and use that as a chamber guide for cleaning.

I just use a the same bore guide used on bolt guns. Just insert in chamber. It'll stay there. Cover the stock with a rag in case of drips.

I bought a #1 bore guide from Sinclair international for my 1A in 7x57, and use it on my RSI in .257 Roberts. It would work just as well on a .30-06. They are currently out of stock, but they can be backordered.

I like the idea about drilling out a fired case to use as a bore guide - I now have a quick project for this evening.

Yes, to above. Quite popular in BPCR circles.

Midway USA sells one from Possum Hollow - similar to the Sinclair model (maybe the same). I use this on on my 7x57 and it works fine.

Rod Guide

If the bore guide does not keep the brushing rod off the throat area, then not much use really.

I have made no.1 intended two piece bore guides ala the benchrester's type, one inserted into the chamber that allows for the patch to flow thru easily and also allows for the secondary insert of the smaller, snug on the rod surface brushing control.

One piece types seem to be always too big in diameter and those snug on the rod have no brush release cavity. If they do, then another piece has to be inserted to allow the patch to flow thru.

The No.1 has the challenge of only basically being able to hold the rod in place with the O-ring on the rod, mostly shaped like a case of the day. But the two piece is the better design in my opinion.

Again, if the rod is not off the throat, then it is not doing the desired task.

My two piece guides are made from delrin, all two piece types; made on the lathe.
