What do you guys use in bad weather? I've tried alot of things over the years, cover hulls, waxed dirt (pita). but i just keep going back to good old calcium chloride (sp?). seems to keep a trap working most of the time.

I tried them latex trap covers one year, lots of pull out, and it slowed the trap down alot.

do you guys 4 coil? i even started to 4 coil my 1.5's and 165's, i have had better luck at good paw catches this way, i contribute it to the heavy crust it has to some times break thru.

anyway, no real debate, just wanted conversation.

I use calcium chloride and latex covers - speed dip all of my canine traps too. When we start to get more than a skiff of snow I pull everything or I'll lose traps to the big drifts that will appear in hours here. Once we have snow I'll switch to snares for another couple of weeks and then call it for the year.

any problems with the speed dip? I thought about trying it, but cant get away from the good old wax/dye combo.

Never had any trouble with it - just make sure to let em' air out for a couple of weeks prior to setting. Best part about it is that it's easy and quick - I hated waxing and dying my traps.

I think i'll give it a go next year, it would be sooo much easyer than dye/wax.

the ol'boy that tought me to trap would roll over in his grave if he knew i was using speed dip, asked him about it one time, he said "why the hell dont you just soak your traps in gasoline and see how many you catch"!

I speed dip my traps with no problem.
When it comes to snow and freezing rain, I use those cheap, thin good for nothing sandwich bags like grandma puts cookies in, they work great as far as stopping them from freezing shut and they certainly don't slow them down, it's better than waxed paper, and it's handy; as long as the trap can start off , it can get through some crust. I typicly use #3, and #4 double long spring and double coil spring jump traps for wolf, wolverine and lynx. It's worked for me for a long time; I hope it helps you.
