We in the northeast have had a record-breaking gentle winter, but there's still nothing like February to encourage ideas about indoor shooting.

Next weekend is my nephew's 9th birthday and he's learned enough over the last couple years to deserve his own BB gun.

His parents are ever vigilant about somebody putting an eye out, and that's an even greater challenge with 5 kids under the age of 11, so the process has been slow and careful.

I found a couple used Daisy model 94's, spring rifles with safer-for-eyes-and-little-brothers' muzzle velocity. But the idea of shooting outdoors, in the cold, and with the eventual tempting robin wandering onto the range, we needed an indoor backstop.

We're also trying to encourage his do-it-yourself ethic, so just buying something wasn't gonna be a sincere gift. I made this and it works great!
