Several years ago I used Portland Creek Outfitters and will recommend them.

Use the search function and try Newfoundland moose, there have been a couple threads here in the last couple months on that topic.

Art Ryan own and runs Mountain Top outfitters in Doyle's. We have gone twice to the camp with Dean, Deon and Darren as guides. Fantastic hunt. I'd go back in a second and suggest it to anyone interested. Be sure you book in the camp that those three guide out of. Camp 9 I think.

This is a hunt I hve been considering for years, but I'd also consider Quebec outfitters....

I too am starting to do some research on Newfoundland moose hunt..

To the guys that have done the hunt,what are the real chances of seeing a 45-50 inch moose? Is there a better area on the island than another area for better size moose? Where somebody could start doing research on outfitters rather then the whole island..

Mssgn is there a area in Quebec you would recommend.. I never thought of Quebec, due to the fact ive been hung up on Newfoundland and there moose population..

For me this would probably be a one time deal, thats why i always looked at Newfoundland cause of there population..I'm thinking more moose a guy might have a better chance of seeing moose and actually getting one..

Noduck, chances of seeing a 40-50 inch moose are slim and none, and slim left town. Lots of BS from those folks up there. I went a couple of years ago, and saw a couple bulls with horns the size of a writing tablet, and was told I should take them. LOTS of cows. One guy got one the last day, with maybe 30" horns. Those folks seem to have NO idea of how to rate a moose and will try to get you to shoot anything that walks. It's also a LOONNG drive, if you drive up. Took us 3 long days from Harrisburg PA to the hunting camp. There are moose hunts that are just as inexpensive, in Canada, and a better chance of getting horns. Also, unless you like walking on floating grass clumps and trying to not get tangled in the tangle foot brush, not somewhere to be recommended. NFland what one guy called a big swamp.

I have been there three times. Twice with Robert's Outfitters, once with Red Indian Lake. Very different hunts, but would recommend either. Going back with Red Indian Lake next year. Talk to the outfitter about your physical capabilities. Some hunts are all day walks, uphill, in a swamp. Some hunts are a scenic Argo ride, some hunts are spot and stalk from a pickup truck, Find out what each outfitter you are considering offers. Realistically you may see a 45-50" moose. Each trip at least one person in my group got such a bull. I would say a 35" was average for our groups. Some guys said flat out from the beginning they were shooting the first legal thing they saw, and did.....

The further in you go, the better your odds on a bigger bull. The further in you go, the more money it costs.

Based on what some of my friends shot I've seen bigger horns on WT deer than their NF moose. I for one wouldn't waste my $$ on a moose hunt in the province.

I hunted with SNOWSHOE LAKE OUTFITTERS in 6 different hunts and connected with game on every hunt. Contact RON HICKS who lives in GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, NFLD.

My first moose with the previously mentioned outfitter was 49 7/8". In the 12 hunters I've been up with over two hunts we have taken 5 over 40" ,4 in the 32-40" range, two cows and a spike bull. The guides will tell you that if you'll pass a few, you'll have a chance at a good one. But their life is easier if you shoot the first bull you see......and they won't stop you. If I could figure out how to post pics here, I would show the bulls we've taken.

Bob Efford of Efford's hunting adventures. Who said there are no big moose in Newfoundland hasn't hunted there or didn't put their time in. Bob consistantly kills lots of bulls like tis every year. It's a fly in hunt not a road hunt. My buddy also killed a real nice moose on this hunt to but I don't have a pic of it. Pm me for more details.

Oh yea I killed a all time B&C Woodland bou on the same day.

I've been there, have you? how many times, how many others you know who have. I know several others who've been there and NONE of them had a great time. All felt like they'd been lied to and encouraged to shoot meat animals. I saw a lot of moose, but nothing worth shooting, as not intersted in a cow or calf. A guy I know in PA went up a year ago, drove, and had 3 others with him. Was told they'd be the only group there, get there a 6 man filming crew there, who were given preference and my guys got some "temp" guides, who just drove the roads, and saw little game (will allow that that probably due to a storm that came through and last several days). The man who ran their hunt was in Harrisburg last year lieing that he had a only one or two people who didn't connect. The guy I hunted with has the top moose killed in NF, and yet got upset when I told him I didn't want some POS one. Another friend went up and the guides refused to remove his animal (Caribou) from the field, and also wouldn't let him set up over it to try to get a bear. MIGHT be a few legitimate outfitters up there, but from what I've seen most either BS artists or outright thieves. I would not go back and can't recommend it to anyone else. No reason to go there anyway, when some decent priced Moose hunts in BC, and better chance of getting a good bull.

You paid for a road hunt that is exactly what you got. Sounds like you did not do your homework before your hunt.

Well those guys did the same thing when in school, did not do homework then bitched because they got failing grades, they never learn. You only get out what you put in.

You're misreading something. I said the guys who went a year or so back, got a road hunt. We did walk, etc., but started snowing the end of day 2 and snowed through day 4, and you couldn't see 50 yards. Went out and only got cold, as the moose were holed up I guess. Snow got up to our knees, and hard to walk in that stuff, as have to lift your leg real high to get up out of it. with the caribou and moose hunt together cost me about $1,100 a day, and this place very well recommended. went with a guy been going up there for 20 years, same place. The other guy I know went with a fly in outfit, and did a lot of walking too. He's the one they didn't tell he could get a moose tag, but had a bear tag, and when they wouldn't bring his bou in, told him he couldn't go set up over it either (I'd have told them to go take a hike, and gone anyway). With walking and glassing we saw something like 30 Moose, but only a few small rack ones. And just HOW do you do "homework" on a hunt like that? Keep hearing it, but no one can ever really say, oh, if you go to this or that place, or group, they can direct you right. My main reason for going up there anyway, was to shoot a caribou, but no one said, you don't have to do the Moose hunt to get a Caribou license. They also didn't ask if anyone would take a Bull only license and let someone else have the anything license. In fact, they never mentioned there were both kinds, and the other guys in the group had Bull only licenses, which I'd have taken (got the everything one), because that's all I was interested in, if I was going to hunt them. One of our guys could have shot a cow, if we'd known I had a cow on my tag. Indeed, if we'd known there were the two different licenses there, we could have let one of them have the open one.

I can say that their guides worked hard for my son and myself. We hunted hard, saw moose and took nice bulls. Both my son and I were successful. Great hunt, guides, camp, meals. We've hunted with them twice and look forward to returning. Grace sure puts on great meals.

roof mentioned that they probably are filled up for 2015. That's because most of their hunters are repeat business and get their reservations in early for the next year or before they leave camp.

Myself and a bunch of guys are going with Efforts (camp hunt)in 2015, I wanted to with Red Indian Lake (fly-in). I'll let you know how we make out.

You might find a clue towards "trophy" moose with the outfitters that offer fly in or wilderness hunts. Price is ususally much higher than the basic ~$4,000 hunt.
NF is a great country and I like the folk there, but it is a tough economy. Most of the land belongs to the queen, so is open to all. Just like in the US, the closer you get to any cities, the more competition there is for the available moose.
A resident can hunt virtually anywhere. A licensed outfitter is only guaranteed that another license won't be issued within so many miles of his lodge, but hunting itself is not exclusive.
NF should generally be viewed as a great meat hunt. Plan on spending some extra money if you want a reasonable shot at a better moose, as you will need to get into the remote, back country, away from the road system, and pay for it.
Most outfitters have a good idea about the horns in their territory.

If you are interested in a trophy moose hunt, contact Shane Mollon with The Next Ridge Outfitters. His moose hunts are more expensive than the average Newfoundland moose hunt, but your chances of harvesting a trophy moose are high (assuming that you are in reasonable physical shape). His concession is accessed via helicopter and the hunts are "walk and stalk". I hunted with Next Ridge on two occasions and encountered several >50" bulls during both hunts. Good luck!
