I'm looking to buy a digital scale. What have you used and liked the best? I am new to reloading so any info would be helpful.

I don't trust 'em. They're too sensitive and temperamental to give me any confidence in their accuracy and consistency. I've used the RCBS, the Lyman, and one other that I can't grasp the name of right now (supposedly the best of the lot) and had to quit using 'em because of unacceptable charge-weight variations.

Their undeniable gimmick value doesn't impress me all that much.

The tare function works great for sorting cast bullets, mixing paint and adhesives and messing with propeller and rotor balance weights, but they don't work for powder weighing for beans.

The most accurate and consistent powder scale that I've ever used was the one that I bought in 1952 � the old Pacific scale with two lock nuts on a threaded beam.

It could be a real bear to set-up, but once you tightened those nuts against each other, the charges never varied.

i have that old pacific scale, but i have not used it since i bought my first digital in the '80s, a Dillon D-Terminator.

I love my RCBS Rangenaster 750. It comes with 2 calibration weights, (20 and 30 gr). I load lots of subsonic velocity rounds for my 300 Blackout for use with a suppressor using H110 powder and Vit N110. We are talking 8.5 grains of powder. I always drop my powder in the pan a tad light , then trickle the last .2 grains to get perfect measurements. I double check the scale with the 20 gr calibration weight every 5 cartridges or so. I have no problems after 2 years using this method. I load 47 grains of varget in my .308 and use the same method. According to my Crony, my velocity never varies more than 30 fps either way so I must be doing something right.

"The Best" digital scale is a Sartorius, or similar, laboratory scale. Fully enclosed glass shield for draft, etc. Those are pricey, but there's a reason labs use them.

I like my RCBS digital fine, and I just make sure to calibrate it often. Much faster than my balance beam, and I believe as reliable.

I found one of those OLD Pacific scales with the lock nuts at an Estate sale. Bought it and tried it. It's a real pain in the butt to try to zero. Is there an easy way that I'm missing? There was no manual and cant find much on line about it.

NASA has scales that will weigh a molecule. Surely we reloaders need a scale at least that good, right?


Uummm.....no.

We don't need glass-enclosed laboratory scales either, my friends.

Denver/Ainsworth are simply unreal. They have a commercial scale and one for reloaders. These scales are the Mack Daddy of scales and the commercial one ran about $800 in 1988. These are not tempremental, and weigh bullets as fast as you can put one on the pan and pick up another.

I am not familiar with the Sartorius GD 503.

Hi all new to the site. I am new to the world of reloading but I have read as much as I can an THINK I have a grasp on it. I to hae a Pacific scale an would love to know how to "set it" with the 2 jam nuts. Got it NIB an no papers with it.

What Model Pacific Scales ?
