Grew up in NZ when Mark Graham , Sorensen brothers , James Leuleuai and the big bloke who played for Balmain were playing over here.
Times when Ray price , Brett Kenny , Stirling were at their best

One or two of those tackles looked on the high side??

Many years ago we had an American Football college team over on an exchange visit, and after watching a game of Rugby Union, their Coach banned them from playing! grin He thought the tackles were nuts considering there was no helmets or body armour!

So what are the rules on hits? Looks like if one is face on, anything goes.

No entirely sure about Rugby League, but I think they are not suppose to hit above the neck for obvious safety reasons..

And you can only tackle the man with the ball, so no blocking like in American football..

Correct, AFAIW. No blocking, no stoppage of play (save for line-outs, restarts after scores, and for injuries so severe the player cannot leave the pitch unescorted), and no targeting above the neck (though, "incidental" contact is often overlooked).
