I have a Tri-Tronics Sport 65 G2 that I bought in 2010. The collar seems to be dying. Since they were bought out by Garmin I don't see them offering spare collars so it looks like I'm going to be buying a new collar. Is 4 years the average life of a collar?
5 years seems to be my average.
Thanks guys. Looks like some of the new collars have replaceable batteries. Will have to do a little research today.
I just wrote to Garmin and they said they would send me a new battery. It has been a couple weeks now, so we'll see.
Called Tri-tronics (Garmin) and they told me they don't support the G2 series but that batteries may still be available. Scoured the 'net but came up empty so far. I may end up buying a new collar after all.
Try the Collar Clinic in Traverse City, Michigan. I think they are still around. They fixed a couple of ancient collars for me a few years ago.
They don't have the battery either. A few of the websites have a footnote stating they'll be getting some in Jan or Feb but I need a collar soon.
I have a Dogtra brand collar that is 14yrs old and no problems.
It has shock, beep on point and beep to locate functions. Never really thought about how long they should last.
Send them the old collar and for $90 bucks they will send you a new one. I've had them last 10 and 5 years. I hunt 3 days a week from October to April plus training, they get used hard. I just bought a Garmin Alpha GPS for $800, it better last!
My recommendation is buy a better collar like TriTronics Flyway. They will last a lifetime. One in my training group has a 30 year old model. The vast majority of amateur field trialers and pros use that or similar model. Because they are dependable and durable.
