Last September, I organized a Free Range hunt for the Vienna International Sportsman's Club near Lake Balaton in Hungary. We were 4 hunters and went right at the peak of the Rut (Brunft) All 4 of us were successful over a 4 day weekend. The trophy weight of the Stags ranged from 6.5 KG to 8.5 KG. For me I was able to connect on the last morning. We went out before sunrise and could here multiple stags roaring. As daylight was breaking, I could see stags and cows in the meadow. Separating us was a small cornfield that bordered the forest. As we stalked along the forest edge a beautiful mature Stag stepped on to the trail in front of us as he was making his way from the fields back into the forest before daybreak. One shot brought him down with a .300 Win Mag. It was an awesome hunt with action everyday. If anyone is interested in going this year please contact me.

Very cool! Those stag have a striking appearance, how are they for eating?
I find them tasting similar to elk. We have the small Roe Deer, which is more like a whitetail, then the Red Stag which is more like an Elk. Normally you would eat Roasted Red Deer with, cranberry sauce and a potato or bread dumpling.
Congrats, red stag are beautiful animals! It looks like a lot of fun.

I'd love to do a hunt like this with my father. He is pretty proud of his heritage, being full blooded Hungarian and all...
Was that near Dombvr by any chance? I have hunted in that area for roe deer and boar. I have an open invitation for stag, but it is a matter of taking the time.
It is about an hour north from Dombovar.
It is not as difficult as some might thing to hunt in hungary. With a copy of your passport, a valid hunting license from your home country you can get a guest 30 day Hungarian hunting license. For around $50-75. Depending on how big of a stag you shoot will determine the rest of the price. I a happy to provide details. I have hunted in 4 different locations for Wild Boar, Roe Deer, and Red Stag over the past 2 years in Hungary.
