Guys:

A quick question: for those who either own, or have owned, both early and later models of the EW, do the flutes on the early models run closer to the muzzle than on the later ones? I saw an early EW, without the webbed B&C stock, and it looks like the flutes run closer to the muzzle (by about an inch or so) than on the newer models. Either that or the barrel had been cut.

Edit: I should add that I'm not talking about new ones with the threaded muzzle.

One 308 EW with DOM 2013. Length from end of barrel to where the flute starts, 1.535".
One 308 EW with DOM 2012. Length from end of barrel to where the flute starts, 1.555".
Both are non-threaded version.

Just checked my 2010 FN built .308 EWSS, 1.5” from muzzle to flutes.

Is this some sort of barrel flute length "envy"?

Maybe off point, but seems to me the "Extreme Weather" rifles of the future will require a "flotation device", "fire extinguisher", "lightning arrestor" and "smoke detector/barometer alert" as a package!

Maybe not just a humorous 'climate change' take!

I think the OP is more concerned about finding out if the barrel was cut. Maybe he should ask how long should my EW barrel be? The couple I had were right around 1.5" from muzzle to edge of flutes. This was 30-06 and 300WSM.

Nah, not "envy" or anything like that.

There are two 7-08 EWs on Guns.com. The first is an older one that is described as having a 21.5 inch barrel, but I clarified with the sales person that is actually mis-described: it's 22 inches. The second, a newer one with the webbed B&C stock, is described as having a 22 inch barrel. So aside from the stock design they are both the same. However, upon enlarging the pictures it looks like the flutes on the older one are longer since there appears to be less unfluted steel towards the muzzle. It could be a slight change in camera angle, but it caused me to wonder if the barrel had been shortened - but again, it is confirmed at 22 inches in spite of the description - or if the factory changed the flute length over time. That's what's behind my question.
