Beautiful Rifle ! Yours is 1 year older than mine, and it took me 20 years to find one in 300 H&H (My Favorite Caliber) in the serial range of the Month and year I was Born.
It became My Alaska Hunting rifle for Moose , Caribou and Buffalo.
Now I download the rounds to 125 gr Sp at 2000 FPS for these Oklahoma deer and Hogs.
I'm down to 4 Pre-64's and 1 1965 model 300 Win Mag Model 70. They are the Rifleman's rifle !
Congrats Idg397.

ONe of the pre'64 M/70's that I bought really cheap, walked into a small gunshow and one of the vendors had nothing but handguns on his tables except for a .300 H & H.. Walked out the door with it for $400.00, the other real buy was a .358 FWT that followed me home for $600.00. Greanted this was circa 1980 but these were great prices for even back in those days.

Congrats on the 300 H&H! I have been loving mine and now I wonder why I waited so long to get the Super 30!

That's a beautiful rifle and just the epitome of the P64 Model 70's!

I'd be very happy to have a rifle like that!

Thank you can’t wait to get it all cleaned up, has a lot of old dried up oil has t seen use in awhile. Going to get it hunting again. The only thing I can find not original is the rear sight. Would the correct rear sight be the Winchester 22g with 3c elevator or would it be a 22k I have read different things about overlap in 1954. This rifle would be early 1954 I believe.

I misread the serial number , it is an early 1954 , 1 year and a few months older than mine. Mine has the small Lyman folding rear sight.

The correct rear sight for your gun can be determined by measuring the overall total height of the front sight….bottom of the dovetail to the very top.
- 103C front sight is .310 h and uses the 22G
- 103E front sight is .360 h and uses the low height 22K
The 22G and 22K are commonly misidentified by sellers as they are basically identical and differ only in the height of their respective sheet metal slides. The slide for the 22G is .340 h, that for the 22K is .315 h.
Should note that the 22K was standard on the M43 and the 22G was the ubiquitous rear sight on a million or so M94’s.
Neither rear sight will fit with the scope currently on the gun, very likely the reason the original was removed.

That is excellent information which this group always provides. I was thinking the exact same thing when reading one or the other is the correct one and then looking at them and wondering they look the same to me.

The easy way to differentiate 22G from 22K slides is that the 22G has a semi-circular top edge into which the sight notch is cut, while the 22K has a shallow “V”.

Thought I would also ask about glass for this rifle. I have a vxiii 3.5x10 gloss I was about to put on another model 70 classic 6.5x55 but I am thinking it might be better in the super 30.

It came with leupold m8 7.5x which was detached for shipping thinking that might go better on my pre 64 30-06 or should I sell it and get another 3.5x10??

Any other suggestions for the 300 h&h??
Posted By: beretzs Re: Winchester 70 300 H&H - 02/24/24
Dibs on your M8 7.5X if you decide to part with it!

I have a 2-8 Leupold on my 300 H&H for now. Been good so far.

Mine sports a 3-9X Redfield 4 plex accu-trac scope , it has a built in range finder and calibrated BDC elevation knob.

Hell of a nice rifle, congrats, i have one a couple three years older, sports an old gloss leupold 3-9 in S&K rings/bases, 220gr partitions at a leisurely 2780 over H-4831 slap the crap outta game animals, great setup, mine would never be for sale, Enjoy that fine pure hunting rifle.
