Inspired by the other thread. Figured I'd ask since my elk hunt starts on Nov. 8th. I am of course. I'll be packing my Alaskan model 70 338 win mag. It's consistently accurate, and tough as nails. No risk of this one cracking out either as it is pillar/glass bedded like there is no tomorrow:

I'm also going to pack the old 71 as well. 1937 long tang with factory bolt peep:

Good luck with your hunts and post pics of your elk rifles. Thanks grin
Was going to use stainless classic in either 7 wsm or 338 wsm but Army has other plans going to ntc during 4th rifle season. So no elk hunting
I used my my 300 H&H as per usual, taking a raghorn the last day.

Nice job handwerk!!
IF I were hunting elk this season, instead of working in Japan, it would defintely be with one of my Model 70s.

It is a hard choice between .300 WSM, .338 Win Mag (my only stainless) and .375 H&H -- all LH Classics. laugh
The left handed stainless classics are something to be desired. Post some pics of them if you want. There are some left handed shooters in the Winchester forums. 79s and I both fit that bill... Probably the only thing him and I agree on grin whistle

Lol oh come on now. grin
Nice one, Handwerk!

Good luck on your elk hunt, BSA. Your 338 Alaskan looks up and ready!! smile

My late father in laws' sister was head of Wyoming fish and game in late 60's or 70's. He would go up from S FL and hunt a couple weeks every year, he was a surgeon, he told me the finest gun ever made was a late 50's mod 70 in 338 win mag. I know he had a lot of one shot bang flop on some big animals. His family got tired of eating elk! My wife told me that every time we had game for dinner. I wish I could justify one. SW GA whitetails dont require a 338 win mag. then again when does a pre 64 loon need an excuse... very best on a lot of nice guns. WinPoor

Both of mine were with a Sako. I did, however, have a Winchester with me, so it kinda applies...

Mannnn....those both look just right to fit in a freezer!

2 elk...not bad for a gimp! ( hows the leg BTW?)
Good job Shrap! Those are going to be some good eats..

We were told all year career counselors aren't going to NTC well we get a new bde CSM and he's like bullshit everyone going. So Friday our 22 hour bus ride begins
Good luck with that. I've spent enough time at NTC to not need a darned map!
Yeah we have a couple guys like that like this is their 13th rotation something like that.

It has been almost 8 weeks. I have been able to stand now, for more than 2 minutes for about 10 days. Walking isn't bad at all. I did miss getting around during archery season, but the rest of the season is looking great. Most of that is due to the freezer fillers from yesterday...
Well, I thought I'd just pack my 338 Alaskan around this year. But what's the fun in that?? grin.. I ended up packing my sniper grey cerakoted classic sporter 30-06 for a couple days, and my FN 300 WSM with the EW barrel, topped with a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42, and Swirly stock I got from good ol Oregon45:

Saw some of these today as it was snowing:

I was hot on the trail yesterday. Ran into 10 elk in the thick stuff, but couldn't put antlers on any of them mad. I know there was a bull in the bunch though!!!!!
[Linked Image]
Hang in there, BSA. Dang sure looks like you were Johnny on their trail. That one is still steamin!
It was steaming!! And I didn't even have to pop it in my mouth to see how fresh it was grin. Thanks for the words of encouragement. I ran into a group of elk today (about 20 head). Well, not today as it is already Saturday. I snuck up to about 50 yards of some of the stragglers. The bigger critters were already in the thicker stuff, so I didn't know if there were any bulls in the bunch. We had about 11 inches of snow, so tracking was easy and quiet. The straggler cows and calves started to move into the thick stuff, so I checked them all out pretty good and no bulls. I circled out around them and caught sight of more cows and calves. I was on a bull track though and I wondered where the bastid was. I tracked slow and meticulously and ran into them again. This time they were in a place where I could see better. They started to move to the east and I watched one after the other until one small bull came out. He trotted behind the rest of the herd. I was using my 300 wsm today because I wanted to see if the MOA trigger was going to freeze up on the SOB grin. It was a balmy 10 degrees when I pulled the trigger on the blue WSM. It fired without a hitch and the "blemished" 180 gr. Nosler partition did it's job. The bull was quartering away when the bullet landed home. I didn't think there would be much heart left on this bull, and I was right:

You guys be safe out there on your hunts and make sure you pack your Winchesters and post some pics... cool
Congratulations, BSA!! Woo hoo!!

Outstanding! Great to see that blue stock on an Elk!
Thanks guys. I think the blue stock might be lucky for me. Oh by the way, JeffO is full of chit. Blue didn't scare those elk grin. At least, not until I fired the shot. grin
Sounds like it was a great day for a hunt. How far was the shot?
85 yards and in the offhand position. I think 99% of my shooting consists of this shot. Too many years chasing jacks in the Nevada sage I guess wink
Way to get it done, BSA.
Lawrence nice job! Congrats!

Sounds like a fun hunt.
Way to go BSA! It's been a long time since my feet have touched snow, I'm glad you tagged a bull. Freezer full of meat too. laugh
raybass thanks! Nice to see you post again buddy. I've missed you!!! Hope all is going well.

Thanks buddy. It was fun and rewarding. The 1 1/2 mile packout was a pain. 7 days into the hunt in a 3% hunters success rate unit makes the meat taste better grin
Congratulations Lawrence.

Way to get the job done!

See, you really don't NEED that old 9.3x62, do you?

donsm70
Ha ha.... grin blush ... Thanks Don..
Good work on the bull, it was a cold season!! First is my NH Super grade in 300 RUM. Deer was taken with my push feed M70, plastic stock 300 Win. Mag (Sold from Walmart in 1997), both are excellent shooters!

BSA, way to go! Nice work! Way to hang in there!

That is going to be some tasty eats.
Anymore elk taken with a Winchester so far this year?
I'll tell you in three weeks. Nevada late cow hunt with the 70 in 30-06.
Good luck with your hunt. I grew up in Northern Nevada. What bullet are you running in your 06, and do you have any pics of the rifle?
Congrats on your successful hunt, BSA. Should be many delicious meals.
Thanks buddy. You know, your pre 64 fwt would make an excellent elk hunter. Are you going this year?
Funny, this all looks very familiar....

wink
Hmmm I wonder why. Is Creekworrior your Indian name?
You indian bastids need to get a room... whistle
