I have been trying to find out when a gun was manufactured it is a Winchester 70 Classic Featherweight 270 cal.with the serial number G1215xx.It is in mint condition.I was on the Winchester site and typed it in under the Model 70 and it comes up as 1949 and I know that isn't right. So I just need a little help.
The G was added ca. 1969. The gun you describe was was made in mid 1970s. It's 1974/1975 according to their site. I looked over 7x57 'Lightweight' #G20679xx in very good condition. That one was made in early 1990s. Not bad guns at all.
is there a web site for the Winchester 70 classic featherweight instead of all model 70 together
IF it is a classic ( CRF) then it was made in the mid-late 90's.
I have a few 5 digit Classics (Gxxxxx). Yours would be considered a 6 digit Classic.
When winchester started making the "Classic" Model 70 they restarted the serial numbers at G15000 I believe. The Classic was brought out in 1994.
I tried to add picture but it keeps saying to large.
What do you mean by CRF

Not that it matters much, but the classics were introduced in 1992. The classic fwt was actually voted the rifle of the year in 1992. A 6 digit classic would have been manufactured around 1994... Just a FYI..
Ok, Thanks then mine is a CRF.Thanks for the history lesson. What does these gun usually go for in mint condition, this gun has only been shot 4 times and that was to sight it in.
Most of Winchesters I look at from 80s or later appear in at least very good condition. When little used or like new it should cost almost the same as new ones made today in equivalent grade. Something in caliber no longer offered like 7mm Mauser is few hundred more.
Thanks again for all of the knowledge that you all have given me.Never too old to learn. Thanks again!!!!!
Thank for free knowledge. I didn't know post 64 CRF guns had unique serialization.
As you have probably figured out by now rifles are pretty much meat getters to me. I will say some of those newer Winchesters came with surprisingly nice wood unlike old pre-64 standard grades that came with straight grained "man wood". When mine fell on wood floor only wood floor got damaged (marked).
Slavek, try dropping a new FN stocked rifle on your floor and get back to us. I'd much rather have a dull looking (TOUGH as hell black walnut) pre 64 model 70 stock than a fancy/easily marred new stock.
Damn, that was a great deal!!!
That was very nice rifle. The fleur de lis checkering on nice wood plus deep bluing looks real sharp. They sell for little less in "potato country" (man, they grow mighty fine potato there). One would expect higher price in Texas, CT, Wyoming,....... or Kalifornia.

Where are you getting the information that they started with serial number G15000? I have one that is G10### and another that is a G15###.
I have several more 5 digit Classics but just not that low.

He was wrong on the release date of the classics as well. Some guys just make more mistakes than others...

Please see above. "I believe". I don't pay that much attention to the classics (even though I have owned quite a few). I don't have the serial number dates in my head like the Pre's.
Sorry for insulting your rifles. Wasn't trying to do that at all.

Again not as in tuned with the classics as the Pre's, but 1992 was a great year. Ah to be 18 again.
Wasn't insulted, just wanting to know where you were getting your info. If there was/is something published, I would like to access it. I too like the Pre-64 and have a few.
No blood no foul Lynntelk! NO worries.
I have seen a number of four digit classics...mostly from the custom shop.
Yup. Snot nosed little.....
You old phuggers are just jealous...
Hmmm, not jealous but maybe envious. Ah, to be 41 again! You guys are in your "good 'ol days" right now!
I respect my elders and you guys are a great group of guys here!! Regardless of your age...

Snort.... With age comes wisdom...if we can remember what we were discussing.
Does it really matter in this forum. We'll usually start with a subject and end on something entirely different...
